Richard sat in the Velvet Cage, the list of names spread before him.
Dozens of people. People he'd wronged in his past life. People he'd hurt, betrayed, abandoned. People who'd been left to suffer while he'd been given a second chance.
I can't undo the past. But I can try to make it right.
Nyla sat across from him, her face pale but determined. "Richard, I've been going through the list. Some of these people are still alive. Others have passed away, but their families are still here."
Richard looked up at her. "Then I'll start with the ones who are still alive. I'll find them, apologize, and try to make amends."
Nyla nodded slowly. "I'll help you. I'll find their addresses, their stories, everything you need to know."
Richard reached out and took her hand. "Thank you, Nyla. I don't know what I'd do without you."
Nyla squeezed his hand. "You'd be lost. But that's okay—I'll always be here to find you."
---
The first person on the list was a woman named Sarah.
She'd been a young mother when Richard had crossed her path. He'd been working for the Syndicate, and she'd been caught in the crossfire. Her husband had been killed, her children orphaned, her life destroyed.
Richard found her living in a small apartment in the Dockside Slums. She was older now, her face lined with grief and hardship. But there was still a spark in her eyes—a spark that hadn't been extinguished.
Richard knocked on her door. She opened it cautiously, her eyes wary.
"Who are you?" she asked. "What do you want?"
Richard met her gaze. "My name is Richard DeLuca. And I'm here to apologize."
Sarah stared at him. For a long moment, she didn't speak. Then she let out a long, shuddering breath.
"You're the one who killed my husband."
Richard nodded slowly. "I was part of the Syndicate. I was following orders. But that doesn't excuse what I did. I'm sorry, Sarah. I'm so sorry."
Sarah was silent for a long moment. Then she spoke, her voice barely above a whisper.
"I've spent years hating you. Years wishing I could find you and make you pay. But now that you're here... I don't know what to feel."
Richard reached out and took her hand. "You don't have to forgive me, Sarah. I don't expect you to. But I wanted you to know that I'm sorry. And I wanted to offer you whatever help I can give."
Sarah was silent for a long moment. Then she spoke, her voice filled with tears.
"Thank you, Richard. Thank you for coming."
---
The next person on the list was a man named David.
He'd been a rival operative, someone Richard had been ordered to eliminate. But Richard had hesitated, and David had escaped. In the years since, David had built a new life—a quiet life, far from the violence of the underworld.
Richard found him living in a small house in the countryside, surrounded by gardens and the sound of birdsong.
"David," Richard said as he approached. "I don't know if you remember me."
David looked up, his eyes wary. "I remember you. You were the one who let me go."
Richard nodded slowly. "I was. And I've never regretted it."
David was silent for a long moment. Then he spoke, his voice quiet but firm.
"Why are you here, Richard?"
Richard met his gaze. "I'm here to apologize. For everything I did, everything I was part of. I'm not the same man I was back then. And I wanted you to know that."
David was silent for a long moment. Then he spoke, his voice filled with something that might have been forgiveness—or might have been hope.
"Thank you, Richard. That means more than you know."
---
Richard returned to the DeLuca mansion as the sun was setting.
He found Sable in the garden, sitting by the fountain, her face peaceful and serene.
"Sable," he said as he approached. "I've been thinking about the people I've wronged. About the ones I've already spoken to, and the ones I still need to see."
Sable looked up at him. "And what have you decided?"
Richard sat down beside her. "I've decided that I'm going to keep going. I'm going to find every person on that list, and I'm going to make things right."
Sable reached out and took his hand. "I'm proud of you, Richard. I'm so proud of you."
Richard squeezed her hand. "I couldn't have done it without you, Sable. Without any of you."
---
Richard found Elena in the library, reading a book by the fire.
"Elena," he said as he entered. "I've been thinking about the people I've wronged. About the ones I've already spoken to, and the ones I still need to see."
Elena looked up at him. "And what have you decided?"
Richard walked to the armchair and sat down across from her. "I've decided that I'm going to keep going. I'm going to find every person on that list, and I'm going to make things right."
Elena set down her book and reached out to take his hand. "I'm proud of you, Richard. I'm so proud of you."
Richard squeezed her hand. "I couldn't have done it without you, Elena. Without any of you."
---
Richard stood at the window of his bedroom, looking out at the city.
The night was clear, the stars scattered across the sky like diamonds on black velvet. The city was quiet, the streets empty, the darkness finally lifting.
I'm going to keep going. I'm going to find every person on that list, and I'm going to make things right.
I have allies. I have a purpose. And I have a future.
Richard turned from the window and walked to his desk.
The work was just beginning.
---
His phone buzzed. He glanced at the screen—a message from Nyla.
"Richard, I found something. Something I think you should see. Come to the Velvet Cage."
Richard grabbed his coat and walked out the door.
---
The Velvet Cage was quiet when Richard arrived.
Nyla was in her office, her face pale and drawn. She was holding a document in her hand, her eyes filled with something that looked like concern.
"Richard," she said. "I found this in the old files—a record of a debt you owe. Someone who saved your life in your past life, and who you never repaid."
Richard walked to the desk and took the document from her.
His eyes scanned the words—a story he'd never known, a debt he'd never acknowledged. Someone had pulled him from the wreckage of a fire, had carried him to safety, had saved his life. And he'd never thanked them.
Richard looked up at Nyla, his voice barely above a whisper.
"Who is it? Who saved my life?"
Nyla met his gaze. "Her name is Clara. And she's still alive."
