Richard didn't sleep.
He sat at his desk, the files from Marcus spread before him, his eyes burning with exhaustion. The information was overwhelming—a detailed map of the Syndicate's operations, their key players, their weaknesses. But there was also something else. Something that made Richard's blood run cold.
The Syndicate is planning to move against the DeLuca family. They've identified Elena as a weakness. They're going to use her to control me.
Richard slammed his fist on the desk.
I won't let them touch her. I'll kill every last one of them before I let them hurt her.
The morning sun crept through the curtains, casting pale gold light across the papers. Richard stood up, his joints aching, and walked to the window.
The city was waking up. The streets were filling with people going about their lives, unaware of the war that was about to consume them.
I need to protect Elena. I need to protect everyone I care about. And I need to destroy the Syndicate before they destroy us.
Richard turned from the window and walked to the door.
He had work to do.
---
Elena was in the garden when Richard found her.
She was kneeling beside the fountain, her hands covered in soil, her face peaceful and serene. She looked up as Richard approached, her eyes filled with surprise.
"Richard," she said. "You're up early."
Richard walked to the fountain and sat down beside her. "I couldn't sleep. Too much on my mind."
Elena nodded slowly. "I know the feeling. I've been having nightmares—about the attack, about Uncle, about everything."
Richard reached out and took her hand. "I'm going to protect you, Elena. I'm not going to let anything happen to you."
Elena squeezed his hand. "I know. I trust you."
Richard was silent for a long moment. Then he spoke, his voice low and urgent.
"The Syndicate is planning to move against us. They've identified you as a weakness. They're going to try to use you to control me."
Elena's face went pale. "What are we going to do?"
Richard met her gaze. "I'm going to keep you safe. I'm going to have Troy watch you at all times. And I'm going to make sure the Syndicate never gets close to you."
Elena nodded slowly. "I understand. But Richard—what about you? Who's going to protect you?"
Richard smiled—a grim, determined expression. "I don't need protection. I'm going to take the fight to them."
---
Richard walked back into the mansion and found Nyla waiting for him in the foyer.
Her face was pale, her eyes filled with concern. "Richard, I need to talk to you. It's about your father."
Richard felt a chill run down his spine. "What about him?"
Nyla hesitated. "I've been looking into his financial records—trying to trace the money he's been funneling to the Syndicate. And I found something. Something that doesn't make sense."
Richard stepped closer. "What is it?"
Nyla pulled out a folder and handed it to him. "He's been making payments to a shell company. I traced it back to a bank account in the Cayman Islands. And the account is registered to a woman named Miriam DeLuca."
Richard stared at the folder, his mind reeling. "My mother? He's been sending money to my mother?"
Nyla nodded. "It looks that way. I don't know what it means, but I thought you should know."
Richard opened the folder and scanned the documents. His father's name was on every transaction—regular payments, substantial amounts, all funneled to an account controlled by his mother.
Why would he send money to her? He betrayed her. He sold her out to the rival faction. Why would he continue to support her?
Richard looked up from the folder. "I need to talk to my father. I need to understand what's going on."
Nyla reached out and took his hand. "Be careful, Richard. You don't know how he'll react."
Richard squeezed her hand. "I know. But I have to find out the truth."
---
Richard found his father in the library.
Enzo was sitting in an armchair, a glass of whiskey in his hand, his face pale and drawn. He looked up as Richard entered, his eyes filled with fear and resignation.
"Richard," he said. "I've been expecting you."
Richard walked to the armchair and sat down across from him. "I've been looking into your financial records, Father. I know you've been sending money to my mother."
Enzo's face went pale. "You know about that?"
Richard leaned forward. "I know everything. I know you betrayed her. I know you sold her out to the rival faction. And I know you've been sending her money ever since."
Enzo was silent for a long moment. Then he let out a long, shuddering breath.
"You don't understand, Richard. You don't understand what it was like—the fear, the desperation. I thought I was protecting you. I thought I was protecting our family."
"By selling out my mother? By working with the people who tried to kill her?"
Enzo shook his head. "It wasn't like that. I was trying to save her—to protect her from the rival faction. I made a deal with them: I would give them information about the Syndicate's operations, and they would spare her life. But they lied. They tried to kill her anyway."
Richard stared at his father, his mind racing. "You were trying to protect her?"
Enzo nodded, his eyes filled with tears. "I loved your mother. I loved her more than anything in the world. But I was weak—too weak to save her. And I've been paying for it ever since."
Richard was silent for a long moment. Then he spoke, his voice quiet but firm.
"I'm not going to judge you, Father. I'm not going to pretend to understand what you went through. But I need you to help me now. I need you to tell me everything—everything about the Syndicate, about my mother, about what really happened."
Enzo looked up at him. For a long moment, he didn't speak. Then he nodded slowly.
"I'll tell you everything. I'll tell you the truth."
---
The hours passed as Enzo spoke.
He told Richard about the Syndicate's founding, about Miriam's vision of a world where crime was controlled, not eliminated. He told Richard about the rival faction—a group of powerful men who wanted to destroy the Syndicate and take control of the city. He told Richard about the assassination attempt that had almost killed Miriam, about her decision to go into hiding, about her plan to create a leader who could unite the families and end the violence.
And he told Richard about Project Phoenix.
"Your mother created it," Enzo said. "She wanted to find a way to transfer a soul from one body to another—to create a leader who could unite the families and bring an end to the violence. She chose you, Richard. She chose your soul because she knew you were strong enough to lead."
Richard stared at his father, his mind reeling. "Why didn't you tell me this before?"
"Because I was ashamed. I was ashamed of what I'd done—of the deal I'd made with the rival faction, of the way I'd betrayed your mother. I didn't want you to know what a coward I was."
Richard was silent for a long moment. Then he spoke, his voice quiet but steady.
"You're not a coward, Father. You're a man who made a mistake—a terrible mistake. But you're trying to make it right. And that's what matters."
Enzo looked up at him, his eyes filled with tears. "Thank you, Richard. I don't deserve your forgiveness."
Richard reached out and took his father's hand. "We all make mistakes. What matters is what we do next."
---
Richard left the library and walked through the mansion.
His mind was racing, filled with everything his father had told him. The Syndicate's founding. The rival faction. Project Phoenix. And his mother's plan to create a leader who could unite the families and end the violence.
She chose me. She chose my soul because she knew I was strong enough to lead.
Richard walked to Elena's room and knocked on the door.
"Come in," she said.
Richard pushed open the door and found his sister sitting at her vanity, brushing her hair. She looked up as he entered, her eyes filled with concern.
"Richard," she said. "What's wrong?"
Richard walked into the room and sat on the edge of her bed. "I need to talk to you. About Mother. About everything."
Elena set down her brush and turned to face him. "What about her?"
Richard took a deep breath. "She's alive, Elena. She's been hiding for years, waiting for me to be ready. And she wants me to lead the Syndicate."
Elena stared at him. For a long moment, she didn't speak. Then she spoke, her voice barely above a whisper.
"Lead the Syndicate? But you said you wanted to destroy it."
"I do." Richard met her gaze. "But I also need to understand her. I need to understand why she did what she did. And I need to find a way to end this war without destroying everyone I love."
Elena was silent for a long moment. Then she nodded slowly.
"I understand, Richard. I don't like it—but I understand." She reached out and took his hand. "Whatever you decide, I'm with you. I'm not going to let you face this alone."
Richard squeezed her hand. "Thank you, Elena. I don't know what I'd do without you."
Elena smiled. "You'd be lost. But that's okay—I'll always be here to find you."
---
Richard stood at the window of his bedroom, looking out at the city.
The night was clear, the stars scattered across the sky like diamonds on black velvet. The city was quiet, the streets empty, the darkness hiding secrets that no one wanted to face.
I'm going to find my mother. I'm going to hear her side of the story. And then I'm going to decide what to do next.
Richard turned from the window and walked to his desk.
He had a long journey ahead of him.
