The morning sun cast pale golden light across the DeLuca mansion as Richard sat in his study, the documents from Dock 7 spread across his desk.
The assault had been a success. The Syndicate leaders were in custody, their operations disrupted, their plans exposed. But Richard couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong—that the victory had come too easily.
They knew we were coming. They were waiting for us. But they didn't fight back—not the way they should have.
Richard leaned back in his chair, his mind racing. The Syndicate leaders had been captured, but their followers were still out there—scattered, leaderless, but still dangerous. And there was something else. Something that had been nagging at him since the assault.
Where was Marcus? He should have been there. He should have been at the meeting. But he wasn't.
Richard pulled out his phone and dialed Sable's number.
"Richard?" Her voice was cautious. "What's wrong?"
"I need to find Marcus. He wasn't at the meeting last night. And I need to know why."
There was a pause on the other end of the line. "I'll reach out to my contacts. I'll see what I can find."
Richard nodded. "Thank you, Sable. I owe you."
---
The hours passed in a blur of tension and worry.
Richard paced his study, his mind filled with possibilities. Marcus had been a crucial ally—providing information, resources, guidance. If he was gone, if he'd been captured or killed, everything they'd built could fall apart.
I need to find him. I need to make sure he's safe.
The call came in the evening. Sable's voice was strained, her words measured and careful.
"Richard, I found something. Marcus is alive—but he's been taken. The Syndicate has him."
Richard felt his blood run cold. "Taken? Where?"
"I don't know. But I know who has him—Viktor's faction. They're holding him somewhere in the Dockside Slums. They're using him as leverage."
Richard's grip on the phone tightened. "Leverage for what?"
There was a pause on the other end of the line. "For you, Richard. They want you to come to them. Alone."
Richard was silent for a long moment. Then he spoke, his voice quiet but firm.
"Then I'll go. I'll find him—and I'll bring him back."
"Richard, it's too dangerous. They'll kill you."
"I know. But I have to try."
---
Richard drove through the city, the streets dark and empty.
The Dockside Slums were a maze of narrow alleys and crumbling buildings, filled with the forgotten and the desperate. Richard moved through them, his senses alert for any sign of danger.
He found the warehouse—a crumbling structure at the edge of the water, its windows dark and empty. Richard approached it slowly, his hand resting on the gun at his hip.
The door swung open before he could knock.
A figure stood in the doorway—tall and thin, his face hidden in shadow. Richard recognized the silhouette immediately.
"Marcus," he said. "You're alive."
Marcus stepped into the light, his face pale and drawn, his eyes filled with exhaustion. "I'm alive, Richard. But I'm not alone."
Richard felt a chill run down his spine. "What do you mean?"
Marcus gestured behind him. Richard stepped into the warehouse and saw them—a group of figures, bound and gagged, their faces pale with fear.
Nyla. Elena. Sable. Vance. Troy.
Richard's blood ran cold. "What is this? What have you done?"
Marcus met his gaze, his eyes filled with anguish. "I'm sorry, Richard. I didn't have a choice. Viktor's faction has my family—my wife, my children. They're using them to control me."
Richard stared at him. "So you sold me out? You gave them everything—my allies, my plans, my family?"
Marcus nodded slowly. "I did. And I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."
Richard felt a surge of rage, hot and cold at the same time. He stepped toward Marcus, his hands clenched into fists.
"You son of a b***h. You betrayed me. You betrayed everyone who trusted you."
Marcus met his gaze, his eyes filled with tears. "I know. And I'll spend the rest of my life regretting it. But I had no choice—I had to protect my family."
Richard was silent for a long moment. Then he spoke, his voice quiet but firm.
"Then we'll get them back—together. We'll find Viktor's faction, and we'll destroy them. And then we'll deal with the consequences."
Marcus stared at him. "You're not going to kill me?"
Richard shook his head. "No. I'm not going to kill you. You're going to help me fix this. And then we're going to make things right."
---
Richard moved through the warehouse, freeing his allies from their bonds.
Nyla's eyes were filled with fear and relief. Elena's face was pale but composed. Sable's hands were shaking, but her gaze was steady. Vance's expression was unreadable. Troy's jaw was clenched in fury.
"Everyone okay?" Richard asked.
They nodded.
Richard turned to Marcus. "Where are they holding them? Viktor's family?"
Marcus met his gaze. "There's a safe house in Uptown. A penthouse overlooking the city. That's where they're keeping them."
Richard nodded slowly. "Then that's where we're going. We're going to get them back—and we're going to destroy Viktor's faction once and for all."
---
Richard stood at the window of the DeLuca mansion, looking out at the city.
The night was clear, the stars scattered across the sky like diamonds on black velvet. The city was quiet, the streets empty, the darkness hiding secrets that no one wanted to face.
I have allies. I have information. And I have a plan.
But I also have enemies—enemies who are closer than I ever imagined.
Richard turned from the window and walked to his desk.
The war was far from over.
---
Richard's phone buzzed. He glanced at the screen—a message from Sable.
"Something's happening. Viktor's faction is mobilizing. They're planning to strike again."
Richard felt his blood run cold.
They're not done. They're going to fight back.
He grabbed his coat and walked out the door.
