Chapter Two
The Man in the Photograph
The next morning, Evelyn couldn't stop thinking about the letter.
Had she imagined it?
She searched her hospital room, but it was gone.
When she asked the nurse, the nurse smiled politely.
"What letter?"
"I found it in the hallway."
"I'm afraid there wasn't any letter."
Evelyn wasn't convinced.
Later, Michael visited again.
He brought breakfast and fresh flowers.
He spoke gently, telling stories about places they'd visited together.
He showed her photos on his phone.
There they were—smiling on a beach, laughing at a café, standing beneath fireworks.
She recognized herself.
But she felt nothing.
stranger's life.
Then she noticed something odd.
In one photo, reflected in the café window, stood a man watching them.
His face was blurry.
But something about him felt familiar.
"Who's that?" she asked.
Michael looked at the photo, then shrugged.
"Probably a passerby."
His answer came too quickly.
That night, Evelyn secretly searched online for Daniel.
Every article said the same thing:
"Local photographer dies in tragic warehouse fire."
No body recovered.
Case closed.
"No body?" she whispered.
A chill ran down her spine.
Her phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
She answered.
A man's voice whispered:
"Evelyn... don't trust Michael."
The line went dead.
She stared at the screen, her heart racing.
Outside her hospital window, someone stood beneath a streetlight.
Watching.
Then they disappeared into the darkness.
