She wondered desperately as she followed the stallion across the next two fields whether the Earl would forgive her for involving him in such an unpleasant and humiliating situation. She was quite certain that he was in fact a very experienced pugilist, but no match for a man like Manzani, who had been fighting crudely and primitively in brawls all his life. She had been well aware also that the Earl was severely hampered by the clothes he wore and his Hessian boots. Even so she realised that his pride would resent the fact that he had been defeated by a circus performer and had not been capable, however bravely he had tried, to defend her from Manzani’s unwelcome advances. There was nothing she could do at the moment, Calista thought, except try to nurse the Earl back to health. She
