Chapter 15: The Unraveling

663 Words
The penthouse was silent, bathed in the silver-blue glow of the moon reflecting off the Atlantic. The heavy mahogany doors clicked shut behind us, sealing out the noise of the gala, the flashing cameras, and the prying eyes of Lagos high society. The silence was deafening. Jace didn't move. She stood against the door, her tuxedo jacket discarded on a chair, her breathing the only sound in the room. I stood a few feet away, the midnight silk of my gown feeling like a second skin that was suddenly too tight. The adrenaline that had carried me through the ballroom was fading, leaving behind a raw, pulsing ache. "You were perfect tonight," Jace said. Her voice was a low rasp, stripped of its boardroom authority. "I was what you made me," I replied, turning to face her. Jace walked toward me, her movements slow and deliberate, like a predator cornering its prey. She didn't stop until she was inches away, the scent of her cedarwood perfume mixing with the salt air from the open balcony. She reached out, her fingers trembling slightly as she unpinned the silver falcon from my collar. "I hated the way they looked at you," she whispered, her gaze dropping to the silver brooch in her hand. "The men, the lawyers, the creditors. They looked at you and saw a Vance. They saw a fallen princess they could pick apart. But I looked at you and saw... everything." She looked up, and for the first time, the "Ice Queen" was gone. Her eyes were wide, filled with a hunger and a vulnerability that made my heart stop. "You think I’m strict because I want to control you, Elena. And maybe that's true. But I control you because it’s the only way I know how to keep you close without losing my mind. Every day I spend with you, every rule I set, is just a wall I’m building so I don't pull you into my arms and never let go." The honesty of it shattered the last of my defenses. I reached out, my fingers grazing the silk of her shirt, feeling the frantic beat of her heart beneath the fabric. "Then stop building walls, Jace," I breathed. "I signed the contract. I’m already here. I’m already yours." Jace made a low sound in the back of her throat, a mix of a groan and a sigh. She reached out, her hand tangling in my hair, pulling my head back until I was forced to look at her. "You don't understand. If I stop being the Director, if I stop being the one in command... I don't know who I am to you." "You’re Jace," I said, my voice steady. "You’re the woman who saved me from a life I never wanted. You’re the only person who actually looks at me." The distance between us vanished. Jace leaned in, her lips crashing against mine in a kiss that tasted of wine, obsession, and years of silent longing. It wasn't a professional kiss. It wasn't a brand. It was a surrender. She pulled me against her, her hands roaming over the exposed skin of my back, her touch burning like ice. The rules, the audits, the "Billionaire's Associate" title—it all fell away, leaving only the two of us in the middle of a glass cage we had built together. When she finally pulled back, her forehead resting against mine, her eyes were dark with a new kind of intensity. "Tomorrow, the world will expect the Director and her Associate. Tomorrow, the rules come back. But tonight..." "Tonight, there are no rules," I whispered. Jace smiled—a real, genuine smile that reached her eyes. She picked me up as if I weighed nothing, carrying me toward the master suite. As the doors slid shut, I realized that the "Command" had changed. It wasn't about debt anymore. It was about a bond that no contract could ever fully capture.
