Chapter 4: The Battle Within

1086 Words
The rogue lunged, its teeth gleaming in the moonlight as it charged toward Elara. Time seemed to slow as she stared at it, her breath catching in her chest. She felt the heat in her hands intensify, the glow pulsing brighter with every heartbeat. “Elara, get back!” Kade’s voice cut through the night, sharp and commanding. But she didn’t move. The fear that usually paralyzed her in moments like this wasn’t there. Instead, something else rose within her—a deep, primal instinct she couldn’t explain. The rogue was almost on her when Kade shoved her aside, his body colliding with the creature mid-air. They hit the ground hard, snarls ripping through the silence as Kade grappled with the rogue. His claws slashed, his movements precise and deadly, but the rogue was relentless, its eyes wild with rage. Elara scrambled to her feet, her heart racing as she watched the fight. Kade was strong, powerful, but even he couldn’t take on the rogue alone. She could see it in the way his muscles strained, in the way the rogue’s claws sliced too close to his skin. Her hands burned with heat, the glow almost blinding now. She didn’t know what to do, but she couldn’t just stand there and watch him get hurt. “Kade!” she shouted, her voice trembling but determined. “Move!” He didn’t hesitate. Trusting her instincts, she thrust her hands forward, the light spilling from her fingertips like a wave. It hit the rogue square in the chest, and it let out a piercing howl, its body convulsing before collapsing onto the ground, lifeless. The silence that followed was deafening. Kade turned to her, his breathing heavy, his silver eyes wide with shock. “What the hell was that?” he demanded, his voice sharp. Elara took a step back, her hands trembling as the glow faded. “I… I don’t know,” she stammered. “It just… happened.” Kade’s gaze flicked to her hands, then back to her face. “You killed it,” he said, his tone laced with disbelief. “Without even touching it.” “I didn’t mean to,” she said quickly, panic rising in her chest. “I didn’t even know I could—” Kade cut her off, stepping closer. “You didn’t mean to? Elara, that wasn’t normal. That was… something else.” “I know!” she snapped, her voice breaking. “You think I don’t know that? I don’t understand any of this!” Kade stared at her, his jaw tight. He opened his mouth to say something, but the sound of another growl cut him off. Both of them turned toward the trees, their bodies tensing as another rogue stepped into the clearing, its eyes glowing eerily in the darkness. Kade growled low in his throat, his body shifting slightly as he prepared to fight. “Stay behind me,” he said, his voice leaving no room for argument. Elara’s hands began to glow again, but this time, she felt more control, as if the power wasn’t just something that happened to her but something she could harness. “No,” she said, her voice steady. “We do this together.” Kade shot her a sharp look. “Elara, you don’t know how to fight.” “Maybe not,” she said, stepping beside him, her glowing hands raised. “But I’m not running.” The rogue didn’t wait for them to argue. It lunged, and this time, Kade met it head-on, his claws slashing through the air. Elara focused on the rogue, feeling the heat in her hands intensify again. She waited for the right moment, then released the light. It struck the rogue’s side, staggering it long enough for Kade to sink his claws into its throat, ending the fight in seconds. When it was over, the clearing fell silent again, the only sound was their heavy breathing. Kade turned to her, his expression unreadable. “What’s happening to you?” he asked, his voice quieter now, almost hesitant. Elara shook her head, tears stinging her eyes. “I don’t know, Kade. I don’t know what this is.” He studied her for a moment, then nodded toward the cabin. “We need to talk.” Back inside the cabin, the air was thick with tension. Elara paced by the small table, her hands still trembling. Kade leaned against the wall, his arms crossed, watching her closely. “Start from the beginning,” he said. “What’s going on, Elara? Where did this… power come from?” She stopped pacing, her shoulders tense. “I don’t know everything,” she admitted. “But Elder Lyra told me about something called moonlight healing. She said it’s a gift that runs in my family, but I didn’t even know I had it until… recently.” Kade frowned. “Moonlight healing? I’ve heard of it, but it’s rare. I thought it was just a myth.” “It’s not a myth,” Elara said, her voice sharper than she intended. “It’s real, and it’s… it’s overwhelming. I don’t know how to control it, Kade. It just happens.” Kade’s gaze softened slightly, though his expression remained guarded. “Why didn’t you tell me sooner?” She laughed bitterly, crossing her arms. “Tell you? Why would I? You made it clear what you think of me. Weak. Unfit to be your mate. Remember?” Kade flinched, the words hitting harder than he expected. “That was before.” “Before what?” she snapped. “Before I became useful?” “Before I understood,” he said quietly. “I didn’t know.” Elara stared at him, her anger fading slightly at the honesty in his voice. But before she could respond, there was a knock at the door. Both of them turned toward it, their bodies tensing. Kade moved first, opening the door cautiously. Liam stood there, his usual smirk replaced by a serious expression. “We’ve got a problem,” Liam said, his voice low. “What is it?” Kade asked. “More rogues,” Liam said. “Closer to the border this time. And they’re not just hunting. They’re looking for something.” Kade frowned. “What?” Liam hesitated, his gaze flicking to Elara. “Or someone.” Elara’s blood ran cold as the weight of his words sank in. The rogues weren’t just random threats. They were after her.
