Episode Five – Brothers at War

Maya's POV The air inside Adrian’s loft turned to stone. The knock hadn’t come again, but the silence that followed was worse. It pressed into the walls, into Maya’s lungs, making her feel like even breathing too loudly would shatter everything. Adrian stood by the door, his knife gleaming in the faint light. His whole body was tight, coiled like a spring. He wasn’t afraid, no, that wasn’t the right word. He was bracing. The voice on the other side of the door was velvet dipped in venom. “Adrian,” Damian Holt called softly. “You’re going to make me wait? That’s rude.” Maya’s heart stuttered. She wanted to hide, to disappear onto the floorboards, but her body wouldn’t move. Every nerve in her was frozen. Adrian turned his head, his eyes pinning her with an intensity that cut through her paralysis. He lifted a single finger to his lips: stay silent. The message was clear. Maya nodded faintly, her throat burning with fear. She couldn’t voice. Adrian stepped closer to the door, his posture deceptively relaxed. But the grip on his knife betrayed him. “What do you want, Damian?” Adrian’s voice was low, even. The chuckle that drifted through the door made Maya’s stomach twist. “What do I always want, little brother? Answers. Control. Maybe a little fun.” The door creaked under a sudden push from the outside, but it held. Maya flinched. Adrian didn’t move. “You’re not coming in,” Adrian said flatly. “Oh, but I am. One way or another.” Damian’s voice was silk over steel. “We can talk like family… or fight like enemies. Your choice.” Maya’s pulse thundered in her ears. She edged backward instinctively, but her heel knocked against the coffee table. The soft clink of the whiskey glass was deafening in the silence. Adrian’s head snapped toward her, eyes sharp, but Damian’s laughter rolled through the door again. “You’re not alone in there,” Damian drawled. “How interesting.” Maya’s stomach dropped. She’d just given herself away. Adrian swore under his breath. “Leave her out of this.” That laugh again, colder this time. “Her? So it’s true.” Maya’s hands shook. She didn’t know what Damian knew, but she knew she didn’t want him saying it. Not here. Not now. Adrian’s jaw flexed. “You’ll walk away, Damian. Right now.” Silence. A pause so long, Maya thought maybe just maybe he had. Then the door frame shuddered under a violent kick. Maya gasped, stumbling back. “Damian!” Adrian’s roar rattled the walls. Another kick. Wood splintered. The lock cracked. Maya’s whole body screamed run, but her legs wouldn’t obey. Adrian turned, his voice sharp and commanding. “Bedroom. Now.” Her chest heaved. “Adrian, I” “Now, Maya!” The raw force in his voice tore through her hesitation. She stumbled into the bedroom, slamming the door behind her. Her hands shook as she twisted the lock, though some part of her knew it wouldn’t hold if Damian wanted it. The sound of the front door crashing open echoed through the loft. And then the silence broke into chaos. Adrian’s voice, low and sharp. Damian’s smooth and taunting. The clash of brothers, one protecting, the other hunting. Maya pressed her back to the bedroom door, her heart hammering so violently she thought it might burst. She pressed her palm into her mouth to keep from crying out. “Still playing the hero?” Damian sneered. “How noble of you. And how pathetic.” “You’re not touching her,” Adrian spat. “She’s not yours to protect,” Damian countered. “She never was.” Maya’s breath caught. What did that mean? The sound of bodies colliding, furniture crashing, a grunt, a curse. The fight had started. Maya pressed her ear to the door, every nerve straining. She wanted to stay hidden, to obey Adrian, but fear mixed with something hotter, anger. Whoever Damian was, whatever game he was playing, he was tearing her life apart. And Maya Carter had never been good at staying silent. She edged toward the window. Fourth floor. Rain-slick streets below. No escape that way. Her gaze flicked to the dresser. She yanked open the drawer. Nothing but clothes. She checked under the bed for an umbrella, dust. No weapons. Her pulse raced. She was trapped. The sound of glass shattering in the living room made her jump. A body hit the floor. She couldn’t tell whom. Her hand closed around the only thing in reach, a heavy ceramic lamp from the nightstand. Her grip was slick with sweat, but it was better than nothing. Another crash. A guttural grunt. And then, Adrian’s voice, strained: “Maya, don’t—come out. ” That was all she needed to hear. She wrenched the bedroom door open. The living room was a war zone. The coffee table lay shattered, and whiskey spilled across the floor. A chair was overturned, shards of glass glittering like jagged stars. Adrian and Damian were locked in brutal combat, two forces of the same storm. Adrian’s face was tight with fury, blood trickling from a cut on his brow. Damian, taller, sharper, grinned as the fight thrilled him. And then Damian’s eyes landed on her. The grin widened. “Ah. The lady of the hour.” Adrian lunged, shoving Damian back, his knife flashing. “Stay away from her!” Maya’s chest heaved. Every instinct screamed to retreat, but Damian’s gaze held her pinned. Something was chilling in the way he looked at her, not as a stranger, but as someone he knew. “Pretty,” Damian murmured. “And brave. No wonder you’re hiding her.” “Damian!” Adrian snarled. Damian sidestepped, his movement unnervingly graceful. He moved closer to Maya despite Adrian’s strike. Maya raised the lamp, her hands shaking but steady enough. “Stay back.” Damian’s laughter was soft, dark. “Oh, she bites. I like her.” Adrian lunged again, and this time his knife nicked Damian’s arm. Blood welled, but Damian only smiled wider. “Always so serious, brother. Always protecting what isn’t yours.” Maya’s pulse thundered. “What does that mean?” she demanded before she could stop herself. Damian’s eyes slid back to her, gleaming. “He hasn’t told you?” “Don’t,” Adrian snapped. Damian tilted his head, ignoring him. “Sweetheart… you’ve been living a lie.” The words landed like poison in her veins. “What are you talking about?” she whispered. Adrian moved between them, knife raised, his entire body a shield. “Enough, Damian. You’re done here.” Damian chuckled slowly. “Done? Oh, Adrian. We’re only just beginning.” His gaze flicked once more to Maya, heavy with promise, with threat. Then, so suddenly, she barely registered it, he retreated. With a mocking salute, Damian slipped out the shattered doorway into the rain-soaked night. Maya’s legs gave way. She collapsed against the wall, the lamp slipping from her grasp and crashing to the floor. Adrian turned instantly, crouching in front of her, hands steadying her trembling shoulders. “Are you hurt?” His voice was urgent, almost desperate. She shook her head, breathing shallowly. “No. But Adrian, what did he mean?” His jaw clenched. His eyes, usually sharp as knives, softened with something almost like regret. “You don’t want to know.” “Yes, I do!” Her voice broke, raw and shaking. “He’s destroying my life, don’t you dare keep secrets from me, Adrian!” He exhaled slowly, his forehead dropping to hers in a gesture so unexpected, so intimate, it stole her breath. His voice was a whisper, ragged at the edges. “If I tell you the truth… you’ll never see yourself the same way again.” Her heart pounded, a mix of fear, anger, and something deeper she couldn’t name. “Then tell me anyway.” His eyes met hers, storm against storm. And in them, she saw the truth he’d been burying, the secret Damian had almost unleashed. Adrian Holt was not just protecting her. He was protecting something about her. Something that could change everything.
