I couldn’t believe it when I saw it. Even hearing it with my own ears, it seemed to be almost unreal. I floated slowly back and forth from one side of my bedchambers to another. I fidgeted with a bracelet I wore, feeling excited and jittery as well.
The days that had passed since Onyx was imprisoned had been a whole week and a half. While I hadn’t visited him after the first night, I had thought about him every night and day after. The handsome and mysterious prince had entered my mind and remained there constantly. Now, my father declared him free but yet under house arrest. He was alive and staying with Sun Clan forever.
My heart thumped at the idea of Onyx and even more so when I realized, Onyx and I would see each other every day. Over the days that he was imprisoned, I had daydreamed of Onyx in many ways.
I could no longer deny it.
I was attracted to Onyx.
I knew it was wrong. I knew I shouldn't. And Thorn would never agree to let me go if he knew I wanted Onyx.
Why does he hate Onyx anyways? I thought to myself.
While it was surprising King Roland had asked for Thorn’s opinion, it was even more surprising that Thorn wanted to kill Onyx off right where he knelt. I had never seen Thorn so determined and strong-willed on something before.
Does it have to do with him being the grandson of Void? I thought to myself, finally sitting down on the side of my bed. No… everyone hates Onyx because of that sole reason. There must be something else.
There was a knock at my door.
I quickly flew to it and opened it up. To my surprise, it was Helena.
She wore a long blue nightgown, and her long brown hair was tied in a long braid.
“What are you doing here?” I asked.
“Ugh, I can't sleep knowing that Night Clan bastard is down the hall.” She spoke. “Mind if I stay with you? Just for a little while.”
I felt surprised that Helena was asking me and not my mother and father. “But, Onyx is being guarded. He’s also sworn loyalty to the king. He can't hurt you or anyone anymore.”
“You trust the word of a Night Clan warrior? With that brain of yours, it's no wonder you are engaged to a drunk,” Helena said. “Look, can I come in or not?”
I hesitated, being offended somewhat by my sister's comment. I sighed and opened the door wider. She flew inside. As I closed the door, I thought of her fiancé.
“Where’s Campbell? Is he working a night shift again?” I asked her.
Helena sighed and sat on the edge of my bed. “He and I are… having some troubles right now.”
“What's going on?”
“Just… some stuff that has come to light. What he wants in a marriage and… what he wants in a fairy woman.” Helena said, looking down and fidgeting with her long braid.
I then remembered Thorn’s prank of having Campbell spill champagne on me and making the remark on Campbell's taste for breasts. I realize Helena must have asked him, and Thorn must have been right.
“Oh… I’m sorry.” I spoke.
Helena scoffed and looked away. “Just because I wasn’t given larger features on my body doesn’t mean I need them.” She spoke. “At least, Thorn likes all of you. Speaking of which, when will you two be married?”
I looked at her in surprise. “You don’t know?”
“Our father is king, and I may be his heir, Silver, but he doesn’t tell me everything.” She spoke. “Please don’t tell me I must share my wedding day with you.”
I shook my head. “Thorn and I are getting married in the winter. Thorn convinced father to make it so.” I told her.
“Hmm…. Isn't it strange how, before all of this, Thorn was the clan's bumbling drunk, and father was so stubborn that not even mother could change his decision once he made it? Suddenly, Thorn just has to glare at him, and our father begins to tremble with... with...”
“With what?” I asked.
“With fear….” Helena finished. She looked at me. “I wasn’t a part of the conversation when he and the royals of Bone Clan revealed your engagement. I couldn’t tolerate hearing anymore on that day. However, ever since that day, father seems… almost terrified of angering Thorn. Father even calls you by your royal title now.”
“What are you implying?” I asked Helena.
“Silver, please, use your mind for once. Don’t you think it's strange? Thorn, a wingless nobody, great friends with the royals of Bone Clan, has a large amount of gold and somehow convinced the King of Sun Clan to change his mind on what date you shall be wed?” Helena stated. “How exactly well do you even know Thorn?”
“How do you mean?”
“Like his background. What did he do when he was growing up? Who are his parents? What battles did he fight in while the Great Fairy War was happening? How exactly did he lose his wings?”
I thought over what she was saying. Thorn was 60 years old in fairy years. Still in young adult years. Thorn had only been in Sun Clan for 20 of those years. During those 40 years, did Thorn happen to make some kind of investment where he profited greatly? Or had he really worked hard and saved it all?
I then remembered the white glowing veins on the day of the engagement party. Thorn eyes and skin had changed. Only for a few seconds, I had seen it. He was different in every way. I didn’t recognize him.
The royals of Bone Clan… they must have known Thorn was angry and was different… that’s why Queen Blossom grabbed me from him and shielded me from knowing the truth.
“I…. I don’t know him.” I admitted. Helena looked at me, surprised. “Not his past… at all.”
“I thought the two of you were best friends.”
I nodded. “We are but…. He never talks about his past in Bone Clan. He doesn’t ever mention his wings or how he even lost them.”
Helena's eyes grew wider. “You mean to tell me you don’t even know what Thorn’s wings looked like?” she asked.
I slowly shook my head. “No…”
Helena stopped fanning and slapped her fan closed. She looked at the ground of my bedchambers.
“My dear sister, you are clumsy, naïve, and quite foolish in every aspect and ratio. However, it appears we have a mystery on our wings.” She spoke. “Something is aloof because Thorn isn’t who we think he is.”
“What do you think he is?”
“I don’t know…. Yet. But I feel as though something is wrong with Thorn. It's obvious he has some kind of secret that he's holding over our parents' heads to keep them quiet.”
“Thorn has always been secretive,” I said. “He's an amazing fairy and a friend. I don’t think he is a bad person, but just wants to defend me and my rights as a princess.”
Helena scoffed again and stood up. She opened her hand fan and waved it in her face. “If you say so. I will take my leave now.” She said and headed to my bedroom door. Before leaving, she turned back. “Despite him being your fiancé, I will uncover what is going on. If mother and father fear him, then perhaps, we should fear Thorn as well.”
I looked at her and shook my head. “No, Thorn can never make me scared of him.”
