Onyx was thrown on his face. His hands and wings were all tied together. After landing painfully on the Sun Clan’s throne room floor, he looked up. Ray and Luther were on the floor next to him. Their wings were tied together, and their hands bound behind their backs as well.
Onyx looked ahead at the throne.
A tall, lean man with long brown hair and monarch wings sat angrily on the luxurious silver throne. Though he wore a silver robe around his entire body, Onyx knew underneath he had sleep attire on. A disturbed and disgusted look rested on this fairy’s face. He cast such a look down on Onyx, Ray, and Luther.
Onyx realized with dread that this was the King of Sun Clan, King Roland.
Standing by the throne, a young-looking fairy woman cried into the chest of her beloved. Her brown long hair was messy, and her silk red robe was torn in the back. A tall blonde fairy man held her close and tightly, looking remorseful.
Onyx gritted his teeth and cast an angry look at Luther.
Luther had disobeyed Onyx’s orders and had snuck into the Great Tree. After learning that one of the princesses of Sun Clan had become engaged to a Bone Clan prince, Luther had suggested the idea of assassinating her. While Onyx was against it, Ray and Luther disobeyed and searched the rooms for the princess.
This led to finding a princess’s room and attacking her as she lay to rest. Uncaring if she was the one engaged to the Bone Clan prince...
However, it had all failed when the blonde-haired fairy came to her rescue.
Ray’s left wing was clipped. Luther was missing a part of his ear. And Onyx had surrendered.
This was supposed to just be a stealth mission, you idiots! Now, we’re dead! Onyx wanted to yell at them.
“Night Clan fairies…. Attacking my home…. And laying your filthy hands on my daughter….” King Roland spoke angrily. He gripped the arms of his throne chair as if restraining himself. “Campbell, tell me, were there any more found?”
The blonde-haired fairy let go of the princess and bowed before King Roland. “No, your majesty. My men have searched everyone’s room, and no more fairies have been reported.” He spoke.
“What is the status of Princess Silver?”
“Queen Lohnni has confirmed her safe and is coming to join us as we speak,” Campbell reported.
King Roland looked back at Onyx and his men. “I can only assume that this attempt was out of jealousy and spite… my daughter being in an arranged marriage with a Bone Clan prince; a plan that the royals of Bone Clan and I had planned a while now. I’m sure King Evermore felt some type of way when he had two eligible sons of his own.”
Onyx opened his mouth to speak but then closed it.
He was screwed. So screwed. He was pretty sure he was going to die. There wasn’t anything he could say or do to get out of this situation. Not in his eyes.
“Who gives a s**t who your daughter marries?” Luther spat. “Sun Clan has much blood to pay for what you did to Void and the Night Clan!”
King Roland said nothing but glared hard at Luther. Campbell unsheathed his sword and walked to Luther.
Onyx could watch in silence and terror as he watched the blonde fairy man sliced off Luther’s left wing. Luther’s cries in pain filled the throne room. He wiggled and rolled in pain. His eastern swallowtail wing was dropped to the floor, uncaringly, and stepped on.
Ray trembled in fear. Onyx looked away from them.
So this… this is it. My father has finally sent me to my death. Queen Vex finally gets what she wanted.
“Father?” a voice came through the screams.
Onyx opened his eyes and looked up. Arriving at the throne, wearing a silver robe was a pale-faced and white-haired fairy woman.
Her eyes were as silver as iron, and her hair was white as snow. Her wings were beautiful in length and design; however, they were different shades of crème white and pearl white. If they had color, onyx knew they would be a monarch’s wing design.
She looked over to Luther, watching him scream in pain. A look of horror came to her face when she saw Campbell holding Luther’s left wing. She then looked over at Onyx.
The look of horror faded into a look of concern and confusion. Despite the terror and looming doom around Onyx, he felt his heart jump a beat and his breath taken away.
She’s…. the most beautiful fairy I’ve ever seen…. Onyx thought to himself.
Onyx’s fantasy was cut short when Campbell dragged Luther to the edge of the throne room entrance. Campbell was breathing heavily.
Both of his wings were gone. Onyx and Ray sat up to their knees and turned to watch. It was all they could do.
Onyx’s heart dropped when he witnessed Campbell push Luther off the edge of the throne room. Luther fell out of the Great Tree, screaming, arms and hands still tied together, and wingless.
Campbell turned to Ray and Onyx.
Ray trembled in fear. He began pleading and begging for mercy.
“No! No! No, no, no! Please! Please! I-I-I-I- I surrender!” he said. His moth wings that were tied together trembled with fear.
It was an unfortunate fate when a Night Clan fairy had to beg for forgiveness before another Clan that hated them. It was another to keep begging when you went flying in the air with no wings to help you.
The same fate that had met Luther was also met Ray.
Onyx found himself, too, trembling and staring blankly at the floor of the throne room. Nearby him, both sets of wings from Luther and Ray laid on the floor in a pile.
As Campbell gripped onto his black wings and spread apart his left one, Onyx let out his final prayer.
May the Night grant me peace after I die.
“Wait.”
Onyx and Campbell looked up at King Roland.
King Roland was looking at Onyx. “Your wings…. They are black swallowtail wings, are they not?”
Onyx staggered with his breath but nodded.
“You… you are the grandson of Void, I assume?”
Onyx trembled but realized it probably didn’t matter because he could still die. He nodded.
Both of the princesses stood together, looking confused at their father.
“Campbell. Bind his hands and wings securely. Place him in the cells for now. No food or water.” King Roland said. “As for his comrades… send their wings back to Night Clan.”
Campbell was hesitant but bowed his head. “As you wish, Your Majesty.”
Onyx breathed in relief as he felt his wings being tied again. As he waited on the floor, he looked up again at the silver-haired fairy. She was looking directly at him, surprised and wide-eyed. She then looked away.
Onyx looked ahead, wondering what this would mean for him. He feared what his future days would look like.
