The silence in the car was suffocating. Every mile felt like it was taking me further not only from the town but from the life I knew. My fingers trembled in my lap, and I clenched them into fists, as if the pressure could control the despair devouring me.
He hadn’t said a word since forcing me into the car. He just drove, eyes fixed on the road, hands steady on the wheel as if the world outside meant nothing. I couldn’t help stealing glances at his profile: a strong jaw, perfectly sculpted lips, and a coldness in his gaze that sent shivers down my spine. He seemed to feel nothing. Absolutely nothing.
The worst part was knowing who he was. Dante Vitalle. The name that made men tremble, that carried stories of blood, disappearances, and fear. My heart was racing so fast, I was sure he could hear it.
I swallowed hard and summoned the courage to break the silence:
“I don’t know what you think you’re doing, but… you can’t just take me like this.”
He didn’t look away from the road. A muscle in his jaw twitched, as if my audacity irritated him. When he spoke, his voice was low, deep, laden with threat:
“I can do whatever I want, Isabella. And you’ll learn that very quickly.”
My stomach churned.
“I have nothing to do with you. Nothing! If you let me go now, I promise no one will ever find out…”
His laugh was short, cold, humorless.
“A desperate girl’s promises are worthless. Your father owes me.”
The air left my lungs.
“I have nothing to do with this!” The words escaped in a terrified whisper. “I had no idea who you were.”
This time, he turned his head, just enough to meet my gaze. The look was so penetrating, so full of power and restrained fury, that I felt exposed, naked.
“That doesn’t matter. Ignorance is no excuse to cancel debts.”
I lowered my eyes, unable to bear the weight. My hands were cold, my whole body rigid. I tried to reason, to find a way out. But every way seemed to lead straight to him.
When the car finally slowed, I realized we were in front of a tall iron gate, adorned with intricate designs, monitored by cameras and armed guards. My heart raced even faster. It was a mansion, or rather, a fortress.
The gate opened automatically, and the car entered without stopping. I held my breath, realizing that this was a world from which there would be no return.
As soon as he parked, he got out and opened my door with a brusque gesture.
“Out.”
I hesitated. My legs felt like lead. Then he leaned in, his face so close that I could feel his breath, crisp and tinged with danger.
“Don’t make me repeat myself.”
I obeyed. My trembling legs almost betrayed me, but I managed to stand. He guided me with a firm hand on my back, as if I were just a piece being moved on a chessboard.
The interior of the mansion was overly luxurious, but nothing impressed me. Marble floors, crystal chandeliers, designer furniture… everything felt cold, impersonal, as if beauty were just a facade hiding rot beneath.
“Where… where are you taking me?” I asked, my voice faltering.
He didn’t answer. He simply walked down the corridor and opened a heavy wooden door, pushing me inside. It was a massive room, far larger than my entire apartment. King-size bed, heavy curtains, a soft rug. But despite its grandeur, I felt as though I had just entered a cell.
I turned to him, desperate courage fueling me, the kind that comes when you have nothing left to lose.
“You can’t keep me here. I’m not your prisoner.”
He closed the door behind him, leaning against it. Arms crossed, he studied me like a patient predator.
“That’s exactly what you are, Isabella.”
A shiver ran down my spine.
“My father will”
“Your father will die if you open that mouth again,” he cut me off, his words sharp and cold.
The words hit me like a physical blow. My legs gave way, and I grabbed the edge of the bed to stay upright.
“You can’t” — I tried to argue, but my voice broke.
He stepped away from the door, walking slowly until he stood in front of me. Each step echoed in my mind like the ticking of a clock, a countdown.
“I can, and I will, if you push me.” His tone left no room for doubt. “Your father gave you as payment. So now, you belong to me until I decide otherwise.”
My chest heaved.
“I… I am not yours.”
His lips curved into a near-smile, but without a trace of humor. It was cruel, dangerous, as if he were enjoying my resistance.
“It will be interesting to see how long you can keep repeating that.”
Tears burned behind my eyes, but I swallowed them. I wouldn’t give him the satisfaction of seeing me broken.
“Why this?” I asked, my voice low. “You could have killed me, ended this. Why keep me here?”
He leaned slightly, bringing his face closer. His shadow enveloped me.
“Because there is no greater punishment than turning your life into a gilded cage. You will breathe only when I allow it, Isabella.”
A suffocating knot formed in my throat. For a moment, I considered running for the door, pushing him, screaming. But his gaze froze me. I knew that if I dared, I wouldn’t leave alive.

The following hours were a blur of silent panic. He left me in the room, but not before locking the door. Of course, I tried to open it. The sound of the key turning outside was like chains snapping in my mind.
I paced in circles, hands in my hair, trying to think of something. The window had bars. The bathroom was luxurious but held nothing I could use as a weapon. I was trapped.
I lay on the bed, but sleep didn’t come. Every sound in the hallway made my heart race. I wondered what he would do with me, how far he would go.
When the door finally opened, it was already night. He entered, flawless as ever, with a glass of whiskey in hand. The contrast between my vulnerability and his calm was overwhelming.
“Getting used to it?” he asked, with irony.
“I’ll never get used to this,” I replied firmly, even though my voice trembled.
He took a sip, then stepped closer.
“Go on, Isabella. Everyone gets used to it. Some even learn to enjoy it.”
I glared at him.
“You’re a monster.”
He smiled, and for the first time, that smile carried a hint of truth.
“Finally, you understand.”

That night, I realized a terrible truth: Dante Vitalle wasn’t just cruel. He was patient. He knew exactly how to break someone, piece by piece, until nothing remained but obedience.
And I was the next victim.
But deep inside, a spark burned. I might be trapped, terrified, but I wouldn’t surrender easily. If he wanted to see me broken, he would have to fight for it.
I wouldn’t be just a prisoner.
I would be the exception.
And somehow… I would find a way out.
