14. Isabella Romano

I woke up to the first ray of sunlight piercing through my bedroom window. The weak morning warmth hadn’t yet heated the cold air of the grand hall, but the golden light made me blink several times. For a moment, I forgot where I was, and the smell of fresh coffee and bread from the kitchen tricked me. For an instant, I thought I was still in the village, in that simple room I had shared with my father, but the silence quickly reminded me that everything had changed. Sofia entered almost silently, her steps light and her smile attempting to be comforting. She carried a tray full of fruit, bread, and steaming tea. “Good morning, Isabella,” she said, placing the tray on the table. “Breakfast is ready.” I nodded, but my hands trembled slightly. I still felt the weight of what had happened days ago, and the memory of the man Dante had killed lingered in my mind. Fear was still intense, and every time I thought of him looking at me with those piercing green eyes, my heart raced. “Thank you, Sofia,” I murmured, sitting at the table. “Do you think… he’ll show up today?” Sofia sighed, sitting beside me. “He always does. But you need to understand one thing, Isabella… resisting too much will only cause problems. What happened isn’t about personal revenge; it’s about control. He wants you to feel fear, but he also wants to see if you can resist.” She paused, looking at me carefully. “But don’t think there’s no room for… negotiation. You have to be clever.” I swallowed hard, staring at the tray of food, which seemed improbably luxurious. I wasn’t hungry, but I knew I needed to eat. If I became too weak, he could notice, and that would only complicate things. Still, the idea of giving in was suffocating. I thought I could eat, but I couldn’t. Sofia helped me to stand and guided me to the grand corridor on the second floor. “He’ll call you soon,” she said, almost whispering. “Try to stay calm.” No sooner had she finished speaking than I heard his footsteps approaching. My heart raced. I felt my body tense like a rope about to snap. The door opened slowly, and he entered, elegant as always, his presence dominating the space effortlessly. “Good morning, Isabella,” Dante said, his voice soft, yet filled with authority. “Today, we will do something different.” My stomach twisted. Every word of his was a command disguised as casual conversation. He approached, and for a moment, just watched me. A shiver ran through me when he stopped a few steps away, his eyes locked on mine. “Sofia, leave us alone,” he ordered with a slight hand gesture. Sofia hesitated, looking at me, and I nodded, feeling a mixture of gratitude and fear. She left silently, closing the door behind her. Dante came even closer, and I could feel the warmth radiating from him. He stopped beside me, merely observing, and suddenly placed a hand on my cheek. The touch was firm, yet strange, almost gentle, and my body reacted uncontrollably. A shiver ran down my spine, and my breath caught in my throat. “Have you eaten?” he asked, his voice low and intense. I shook my head, unable to form any words. He raised an eyebrow, moving even closer. “Then I’ll help you.” Without waiting for my permission, he delicately took a fork with a piece of bread and brought it to my mouth. I hesitated, but he held my chin with his other hand, forcing me to look at him. My first bite was reluctant, and he simply raised an eyebrow, as if to say, “I know exactly how you feel.” When I finished, his hand almost touched my face again, so close that I could feel the warmth of his skin. “Good girl, you’ll learn little by little,” he murmured, and my heart raced. There was no threat in his words, just a silent promise, full of intensity. I took a deep breath, trying to pull away, but he stayed there, watching every reaction of mine. Then, finally, he spoke: “Today, I’ll show you something,” he said, with that almost cruel calm that always kept me on edge. “I want you to come with me.” I followed him in silence down the corridor, trying not to show fear, but my mind was in turmoil. He led me to a huge office, with walls covered in documents and shelves full of folders. “Organize these documents,” he said, handing me a few folders, “and tell me everything you find relevant. I want to see how you think.” As I began organizing, he stayed close, observing every movement. Every time my hands trembled or I hesitated, he came nearer, discreetly resting an arm on my shoulder or letting his fingers brush mine while picking up a document. “You’re more stubborn than I imagined,” he murmured, low, so close I could feel his breath. “But there’s something about you that intrigues me.” My face burned, but I tried to maintain composure. “I don’t want to intrigue anyone,” I replied, trying to sound firm. “I just want… to survive.” He smiled, a smile that mixed amusement and danger. “Ah, Isabella… you think too small. The world you’ve entered doesn’t allow survival without… adaptation.” While I organized the papers, I felt him coming closer and closer until his face was beside mine. His warm breath against my ear made me uneasy. He leaned in, and for a moment, I felt his lips so close I could swear he was going to kiss me. At the last second, I turned my face to the side, avoiding contact. Dante didn’t pull back. He pressed his forehead against mine, maintaining that closeness that left me tense and vulnerable at the same time. “Still, you’ll beg for me, mark my words,” he murmured again, so close I could feel each word vibrating in my chest. My heart raced. I felt a mix of fear, desire, and confusion. He slowly stepped back, but the effect of the touch and proximity still pulsed through my body. “Ready?” he said, and for the first time that day, I felt a small respite in his intensity. “Continue the work. I’ll be watching.” I spent hours reorganizing the documents, and every time he came close, even just to check something, I felt that almost intimate touch, that brushing of hands or shoulder that made me restless and even more curious about him. When I finally finished, he examined everything carefully, and I could feel the weight of his gaze evaluating every gesture, every choice. “Interesting,” he said, and only then stepped completely back, allowing me to breathe. “Very well, Isabella. That’s enough for today. But know… nothing you do goes unnoticed by me.” I returned to my room with Sofia, who greeted me with an understanding smile. I sat on the bed, still feeling the effect of his touch and proximity, and whispered to her: “Sofia… he… today… came so close.” My hands trembled with mixed excitement and fear. “I… don’t know how to react.” Sofia looked at me knowingly. “That’s how it is. He tests everyone differently, but always maintains control. You need to learn to handle it. And one day… you might even realize that this tension works in your favor.” I lay on that enormous bed, my heart still racing, his touch on my skin and the unspoken promise of his words echoing in my mind. Night fell, but my thoughts were still with him, and for the first time, I felt that my resistance could become even more complicated. Fear, fascination, and attraction mingled in a way I had never imagined possible. And in that moment, I swore to myself: I needed to find a way to survive… and somehow, keep my heart intact.
