The New Life

Sevag’s pov   I stood in front of the big gate. Hovig stood next to me wondering with me.  Boys and girls were going up and down the stairs, greeting to each other laughing, hugging. I was a stranger and I didn’t speak their language and that made me worry. I was still staring when Hovig poked me:-hey, what’s wrong?”-he said smirkingly.  “Nothing, I was just wondering how lucky I am to be in here.”:-I said unsure. “Ok then, let’s go in. Come on in.”:-said Hovig smiling.   We went up the stairs and to the registration office. We sat waiting for our turn. I was silent, my heart was pounding too fast and loud. I began to sweat and my hands were shaking nervously. I didn’t notice my feet were shaking too until Hovig put his palm and pressured on them saying:-“ relax son, there’s nothing to worry.”   I smiled back at him, knowing I shouldn’t worry that much, but I couldn’t control my fear, after all, I was in Germany to study, I was in a university, and plus I didn’t know the language. I thought how lucky Vrej was for being in England, at least we both knew english.    I was like in a dream and didn’t hear my name was being called, until Hovig shook me. He was looking at me angrily:-“wake up, you’re here to get wise, be educated and revenge come on.” I didn’t understand what he stated at, cause I was too busy to find the way out of the feelings which were haunting me down.   My grades were perfect, and I was much better than Vrej at school. When I got inside the office an adult lady greeted us with her fake smile. She invited us to sit on the chairs in front of her desk, she drowned herself in my files, looking at me every once in a while above her butterfly eyeglasses, as if she didn’t like what she read. I was a Lebanese Armenian 21 years old guy, I had no father, I’ve never been in Germany and I never spoke a word in German. Then suddenly she got that surprised smile in her face, and I was sure she saw my grades, and I was proud of myself. I looked next to me at Hovig he also looked proud of me, I guess he couldn’t hold himself and that’s when he spoke:-“ Mach dir keine Sorgen, er ist ein intelligenter Typ, er lernt deine Sprache so schnell, wie du es dir nicht vorstellen kannst. Beurteile ihn nicht nach seinem Leben.”( Don't worry, he's an intelligent guy, he'll learn your language as fast as you can't imagine. Don't judge him by his life.) I really don’t have any idea what he told that lady, but the lady smiled, a real one this time. She helped us with the paperwork to  be done. And finally she spoke:- “mr. Sevag, you are welcome in our university.”   Meanwhile in London     Vrej’s pov     I really didn’t have any idea why my father was too kind and why he loved Sevag so much. He was offering Sevag his business, a life like mine, I was his son, but he loved us equally. I didn’t understand why, he wasn’t even my cousin or something. Its not that I don’t love Sevag, I really do love him like a brother to me and as my best friend, however, I don’t find an answer to any of my questions in my head, and I never had the courage to ask these silly questions to my dad.    England was a new beginning for me. I wasn’t happy at first but when I got into the university and met her, everything has changed. She was a beautiful girl with deer eyes, long curly blonde hair, she reminded me the models of Victoria’s Secret. I was amazed by her beauty at first look. I thought this is my dream girl and I was excited to meet her and get to know her. I don’t know why, but i completely forgot about Sevag and never spoke to him, but he also didn’t get into contact, so I didn’t feel any guilt.     Sevag’s pov   The university was so different from school, and so Germany. In Lebanon everything was easier or I thought it was easier, Lebanon is famous by its mess, but Germany seemed different, much different. Hovig left, I was alone in the huge education center, students were passing by me, looking at me weirdly.  I was a stranger. I noticed other students from other countries, I felt like I had to become friends as soon as possible, so that I can involve. I had to learn German very soon, I had to make friends, or else I was going to explode. There’s no one I could talk. There was no where I could go. I knew nothing.  Finally I heard someone was talking in Arabic, my eyes began to search that voice, where was it coming from?  I saw a group were sitting on the stairs, and a guy was standing in front of them lecturing.  Oh my God, finally I could understand a word. He was telling a joke and everyone else was laughing.    “مرحبا، كيفكن؟”(hi, how are you?):- I said smiling. All at once looked at me surprised. The guy who was standing replied:-“اهلا، مناح وانت؟”(hi, we’re fine and you?) he smiled back. And everyone smiled and greeted me. “واخيراً لقيت ناس افهم علهن” ( finally I found people whom I can understand to.) I said taking a deep breath. They all laughed and the guy who was standing said:-“انا غارين و انت؟” (I’m Garen and you?) “Հայ ես:”( you’re Armenian.) I said in surprise with wide eyes.« Անունս Սեւակ է, Լիբանանէն։» ( I am Sevag from Lebanon.) I was happy to find people like me. They all introduced themselves, there were 3 girls and 4 guys, the guys were, Garen, Hovsep another Armenian guy, Fady a Lebanese guy and Yousef a Syrian guy, the 2 girls were Lebanese Maha and Suzan and the 3rd one was also Armenian Sevan.   We became friends and I was happy for that.  My first day was great and when I reached home I immediately video called Vrej to tell the news.  “Bro, how are you? I know I should have called you much earlier but I was confused and busy with the new life, I’m trying to get adapted. How is your life bro?” I asked. “Bro, I met a girl, she is gorgeous but I still didn’t get to know her. The uni seems scary but I guess I have to get adapted too, what did you do?” He asked. “Bro I found a group, Lebanese and Armenian and  Syrian students, I became friends with them, cause I still don’t understand a word in German.” I said happily.  We chatted and when I  heard Mia calling my name to go have dinner I ended the video call and went to have dinner with Hovig, Anna and Mia. As we finished Hovig said:-“ Mia, when you finish your work, go sleep with your child. We have some work to be done. And please don’t disturb us.”   Mia shook her head a “yes sir” and we left to the study room. I was questioning to myself, I never saw Hovig so serious. We went into the room as he sat on the black couch inviting me to sit on the other couch facing him.   “What’s wrong Hovig? Did I do something wrong?” I asked worried. He put his hands on his knees leaning towards me, he closed his eyes for a moment, his head down, breathing deeply as if he was collecting his courage.  Finally he opened his eyes and looked at me a very serious look.  He was holding an envelope. I was confused and worried at the same time, but I didn’t speak a word.  He handed me the envelope:-“take this, and read it.”  I held out my hand to take the piece of paper but he was still holding it and didn’t let it go :-“ I know you’re still a kid but you have to become a grown up after reading this.” I was worried much more after hearing these words, I only shook my head and grabbed the envelope.  I hesitated to open it at first, not knowing what was inside but I finally opened the glued envelope, it was yellow, it seemed old, it seemed as it was hidden for a long time. I took out the paper in it, and when I read the first word, I felt my heart skipped some beats.  It read :-“SON.”
