CHAPTER THREE

1129 Words
Oliver was back. I popped my feet up on the chair taking a deep breath. In my wildest dream I wouldn’t have thought Oliver would come for me that night, following behind him was our family lawyer. I didn’t think I’ll see them both that night. The color had drained from my eyes because I had cried my eyes out, the police officer had told me Oliver colleagues pressed charges and wasn’t willing to let me go easily. “But I didn’t do anything, I never took his bracelet”, I said crying. “You’ll have to prove that”, He shrugged with genuine concern in his tone. Oliver came into the room followed by my lawyer, I couldn’t look at his face because I was afraid of what he’s going to say. They spent the next hour talking and I just kept quiet because I had no idea what to say. Oliver and the lawyer had managed to convince the man to drop charges against me , but I know such an act of kindness from Oliver wouldn’t come without a price which I would have to pay dearly. My mind was still struck considering how much his sister hated me for having framed me for theft. They met the bail requirements and I was released from custody. There was total silence as Oliver was driving home but I managed to say something. “Oliver I didn’t steal your colleague's bracelet, I was framed for this”. He maintained his eyes on the road and didn’t utter a word, so I continued. “ Please you have to believe me, you know I don't take what’s not mine”, I said with my face fixed on him. Suddenly the car came to a halt , Oliver turned and faced me, his face glowing red from anger. “Celine I don’t know you anymore, you stole from my colleague and brought shame to me. You’re lucky I cared to have you released”. He ignited the car and we drove home in silence. …………………………….. I followed Oliver through the front door and my face showing no expression when I saw his sister and mom in the living room, I said nothing as I approached them in a bid to gently go to my room. “You’re back early”, His sister said, teasing me. I stopped in my tracks , took a deep breath and turned to face them. “ I know , thanks to Oliver” , I replied with my face still expressionless. I was tired and hungry , I hadn’t eaten since afternoon before Oliver came home from work. But I wasn’t sure to head to the kitchen straight away and was in no mood for any confrontations from his family members tonight. I approached our bedroom ,and was about turning the knob , I heard Oliver voice behind me. “ No, you ain’t welcome there anymore , you can move to the guest room.” He pushed me aside, and locked the door behind him. Like a lamb being led to the slaughter, I gently obeyed and moved to the guest room. “ Serves you right , you must leave this house and I’ll see to it.”Oliver's sister taunted me while I was going to the guest room. “Why do you hate me so much?”, I asked her. “You don’t deserve any of the good things you’re enjoying in this house, go back to your farm, you lowlife”. His mother replied to me with a loud hiss. I’ve heard stories of how In-laws hate their wives and in most cases there’s a reason behind that, but in my case I’ve always treated them with utter respect and kindness. I don’t deserve any of these cruel acts I’m getting in my husband's home. I stood in front of the closed door, pushed it open and entered. I was weak, tired and hungry but I’d lost all strength to get up and get something to eat. I wished I could talk to my Mom and tell how , how s**t my marriage has been despite taking her advice. I was lost in my thoughts while I just laid in bed and slept off. The next few days were filled with silence and the house was in peace. I only came out of my room after Oliver and his family had gone out, I was living like a prisoner in my own home and I tried to avoid them in any way. One evening Oliver came home early from work , I wasn’t expecting him to be home by that time. I was busy watching a show on the TV when I heard his car parking in the driveway. I thought I could use that moment to talk to him since we haven't spoken in days. I got up, straightened my dress and was ready to jump on his body immediately when I opened the door. I was greeted with Oliver locking lips with a lady, they walked past me like I wasn't there and headed straight to our matrimonial bedroom. My heart was torn with total disbelief, my tongue glued to the bottom of my mouth and I couldn’t produce any words. I could hear their laughter and cackles from the living room, the house was filled with their screams and grunts as they filled with pleasure. When they were done Oliver escorted the lady outside and came back in in a little while. “The next time you try to ruin my happy moments with your presence, you’re leaving this house.” He said to me in his baritone voice. “But I said I’m sorry , why do you keep torturing me , you even brought a girl into our matrimonial bed”, I replied softly not looking at him. “You lost your right the moment you stole from my colleague, I’m been generous enough by allowing you to stay in this house so mind your business and avoid me.” He ordered and stormed off to the bedroom, I wasn’t going to let him have his way this time around , I followed him and fling open the door. “You’ve known me for 3 years and I’ve never taken what’s not mine , why do you think your friend bracelet would be important to me at the expense of my marriage?.” Oliver was shocked by my reaction, he stood up abruptly from the bed and pounced on me, hitting and kicking me. “ I told you you’ve lost your right to walk into this room, I don’t want to see you anywhere near me, you this bitch.”
