Chapter Two – The Rite of Awakening

1521 Words
“ARIA’S POV” My muscles tensed, and I instantly took a step back. Freezing mid-step, my head snapped toward the sound. To see students shoving and stumbling to get away as a boy collapsed mid-shift. His body twisting violently as his bones cracked, transforming, his claws scraping against the tiled floor as he writhed. His eyes rolled back, foam spilling from his mouth. A guttural snarl ripped through his throat, splitting the air into something monstrous. Fear swept the courtyard, cries rising in panic More gasps erupted, and the screams grew louder, tearing through the air. The torches along the walls flickered wildly as panic surged. I pressed against the wall, frozen, my chest heaving. Every instinct in me screams to run. But for a heartbeat, I was caught in the chaos, transfixed by the horrific sight of the boy clawing at the earth as though something inside him was tearing him apart. Then, just as quickly, my eyes cut through the chaos, unexpectedly, it locked on to Kael’s gaze again, he shot back a sharp and unrelenting glare at me. My chest hitched with a fresh wave of fear cutting through the noise. Then he began to move, his steps quickened and his shoulders slicing through the scattering crowd. My pulse spiked. Without hesitation. I spun and darted forward, my feet pounding against the marble floor. He followed, his movements steady and deliberate, a few steps behind but closing in. I shoved forward, slipping into a narrow passage by the training gates. I knew these grounds better than most; I had explored every corner in them during restless nights. Immediately I slipped into a shadowed corridor that felt steeped in mystery. Hoping he wouldn’t follow, but he continued. I could hear his boots echoing behind me, steady and gentle. My lungs burned as I darted deeper, past the forbidden wing of the academy, toward the old stairwell cloaked in cobwebs. My heart thumped heavily, as I dropped to the floor and slid beneath the crumbling steps, forcing myself into the dark hollow. I clamped a hand over my mouth, choking back the sound of my breath. Moments later, Kael appeared. He stood in the middle of the abandoned hall, his broad frame tense, his head snapping sharply from side to side as he scanned the area. “Hello!… Is anyone here?” “Come on out!. I just want to talk”. For a moment, I felt his wolf stir close to the surface—his nostrils flaring, his eyes glinting with suspicion. He moved down the hall, checking every door, each one slamming open and shut as he prowled the space. “Damn… I could have sworn I saw her come through here,” he muttered to himself. My wolf senses flared. From the shadows beneath the stairs, I watched him closely enough to catch the confusion lit across his face, I could hear his breath, my keen sight catching the faint pulse at his throat. My heart hammered so loudly I feared he would hear it. At last, after what seemed like forever, he stilled. His chest rose and fell sharply, then he let out a low sigh and turned away. His footsteps faded slowly, swallowed by the silence of the corridor. I stayed frozen, clutching my knees to my chest until I sensed he was gone. Slowly, I lifted my head, peeking out shakily to make sure the coast was clear. Then I crawled out, careful not to make a sound. I moved in a hush, slipping through the door I had come in by. Pausing again, I peeked one last time to be certain he wasn’t lurking nearby or anyone else, before I finally stepped out, striding away with shaky confidence. Once I was out of the zone, I didn’t wait, I ran toward my dorm, my legs trembling. •••••••• The courtyard was unrecognizable. The full moon hung high, spilling silver light over the academy towers. Torches burned in iron sconces, their flames snapping against the dark. Every fresher stood in a circle before the altar, our shadows stretching long across the stone. Our breath misting in the air. The silence was heavy, pressing down on my chest. Ivy nudged me, her hand brushing against mine, squeezing it tightly. “Breathe. Just breathe.” she whispered, her voice breaking. Headmaster Dorian stood on the altar steps, his robe trailing, as he raised his arms. His deep voice carried across the courtyard.
“Tonight, you awaken the bond of blood and spirit that will bow to the moon. I hope you all find glory”. A chill slid down my spine. Murmurs rippling through the crowd. A girl with golden braids stepped forward, her eyes shining as she knelt before the altar, trembling. Moonlight washed over her. Her body shuddered and twisted, bones snapping, fur bursting through her skin. Gasps rose as her wolf landed on the spot, sleek and silver with blazing eyes. Cheers from the crowd filled the night. “Strong! Look at that fur!” A voice cut through the crowd The girl shifted back, panting with a smile lit across her face. Her friends clapped her on the back, already chanting her name. One by one, more students went up. Some shifted smoothly, wolves spilling out of them like water breaking a dam. Some shook and struggled, their wolves weaker, smaller, but still there. The crowd cheered the strong and snickered at the weak. And the line grew shorter. My palms were slick. My heart hammered like it wanted out of my chest. “Aria Rivers.” The sound of my name hit the air like a blade, slamming through me. I froze. My feet felt stiff. Ivy gave me a push. “Come on! Go! You can do this”. I moved, almost missing a step. As I walked through the whispers each step grew heavier than the last. The courtyard blurred. All I could feel were eyes—hundreds of them—digging into my back. My knees hit the stone at the altar, cold seeping through my skin, as moonlight poured down on me. For a heartbeat, nothing happened. Just silence as my heart hammered in the emptiness. Then suddenly, pain tore through me. My bones snapped, reshaping, loud enough to echo. Heat and fire surged under my skin. My body shook, reforming. I screamed as my wolf tore out of me, wild and violent. My claws scraped against the stone. My breath coming out like a snarl that shook my own chest. I could feel the world tilting as my wolf erupted. Gasps filled the courtyard. A few students stumbled back, And then, I looked down to see a rune, glowing bright, flared on my skin. Twisting, alive. For a moment it shone like molten silver. It paused once, then vanished as quickly as it came. The courtyard went silent. I staggered, my chest heaving, My wolf snarling restless, the mark still burning under my skin. I lifted my head— —and froze in a trance state as my eyes locked on Kael Storm. Kael Storm was staring at me. His storm-gray eyes locked on mine, and for a second they glowed molten gold and then went off, his wolf bleeding through without him realizing. The sight hit me like fire. Suddenly, a sharp pull tore through me, yanking hard at my chest. My breath caught and my wolf went silent—then, with a shudder, followed by a burst of air ripped from me as my wolf howled. I stumbled a step forward, the bond dragging me closer. My lips trembling, words burst through my mouth before I could stop them.
“You’re… you’re my mate.” The words rang out into the night. Now, I could feel the mate bond burning through me like lightning. Gasps broke the silent crowd. Ivy’s hand flew to her mouth. Whispers exploded in every corner. I stared back at Kael, his expression had turned cold. He stepped forward, For a second, I thought maybe… Then his voice cut through me, cold as steel.
“No.” The word hit harder than the pain I was feeling from shifting. Kael stepped further, his gaze cutting through me, cruel and merciless.
“ This cannot be possible.” He said, shrugging as if disgusted. “You can’t be my mate, no way! He let out a cold chuckle. Then continued. “I mean. You are weak and unworthy to a Luna to a wolf like me”. “You could barely even shift.” The courtyard erupted in laughter and mocking whispers. “This is not happening! You can never! never! be bound to me”. My legs buckled. The bond inside me cracked like glass shattering in my chest. I swayed, feeling the world spin as the moonlight blurred into streaks of silver and black My wolf whimpered, broken. its pain clawing through me. And then—My body crumpled, I fell, collapsing to the ground. Everything went dark.
