6 Nick was no longer surprised to see Melissa in his kitchen. He’d been half-hoping that she wasn’t there. The other half of him well, he wasn’t thinking about what that part had been hoping for. “Hey,” she said. He caught a strange note to her voice but forced himself to ignore it. This woman had bullied her way into his house and his personal business. Nick wouldn’t be distracted by her pouting lips or worried eyes. “Hi.” He set his bag down on the sofa and rolled the crick in his neck. This was his first year out of residency and he was finally able to do a nine-to-five shift a couple days a week. “Sit.” Melissa set a plate on the table.
