Possible symptoms sped through Nick’s mind as he carried Melissa into the house.
She’d slipped so quickly into shock that he couldn’t quite pinpoint what set her off.
Earlier, Melissa had stirred herself into a frenzy over Maria Hernandez’s arrival and what it would mean for Ida.
Had he hurt her by insisting that they exercise?
“Put me down!” She hit his chest.
He scooped her closer to him and trapped her violent arms between their bodies.
Nick felt it then, the quick hammers of her pulse against his skin.
Concerned, he rushed to the guest room and tossed her into the bed. He pressed his fingers to her neck.
Her heart rate had increased and the cadence beat against the pads of his fingers.
“What are you doing?” Melissa recoiled.
“Are you sure you don’t feel nauseas or dizzy?”
