The g**g leader and the third man fixed their eyes on the van in the distance—the one holding the cash they had just stolen. It was close enough to see, yet impossibly out of reach. That, perhaps, was the cruelest definition of “so near and yet so far.” Seven or eight minutes later, two police cruisers pulled up on either side of the van, boxing it in. Officers jumped out, guns drawn, aiming straight at the vehicle. “You’re surrounded! Step out of the van!” one of the officers shouted. There was no response. The police moved closer, step by careful step. “Look over there—two people on the ground!” A young officer pointed toward the roadside. Five minutes later, the situation became clear. “Captain, all four suspects are under control. One’s been shot and is in critical condition.
