CHAPTER 8THE ENDING The legion was there by dawn. As the sun-star rose up over the edges of the world, Almery looked upon a bewildering sight. The town of tents had caught afire and burned; now it was empty of all save corpses. Ten thousand of the Thungoda had perished or gone mad and fled like panic-driven beasts. These the revengeful knights of Khev hunted down and slew at their leisure. They had been at this pleasant task for half the night. To where the High Prince sat wearily on the hilltop came Duke Almery to him with a thin girl with tired eyes, her bright hair matted with road-dust. The Prince swore feelingly, then crushed her to his heart. Few words were exchanged. They looked towards the city.
