CHAPTER 12THE SECRET OF THE BEAST The crest of the knoll had been artificially leveled at some time in the ancient ages of the past, and once a structure of hewn stone had stood here. But now it stood no more. The years had toppled the stone building long ago, and now it lay in tumbled, broken fragments of worn stone, green and rust-colored from mold and lichen, crumbling away under the tireless erosion of wind and weather. But it could still be seen, if only by the foundations, that the knoll had once held a square stone building, perhaps a temple or a shrine.
