And, shrugging off the restraining arm of Kellory, the girl strode across the rocky mouth of the pass, looking about, one small, capable hand clenching the hilt of her keen dagger. Kellory sighed, rose, shrugged and followed her, unlimbering his long black Staff of carven wood. “There—” hissed Carthalla, pointing down the slope. He looked, to see something like a crouching shape, huddled under a shabby cloak. Then he blinked, and looked again, seeing only a shadow where the form had been. Then even the shadow was gone. He turned to speak to the girl, but she brushed past him, clambering lithely down the slope. “It is a child! A lost child, maybe hurt—come on!” cried Carthalla, scrambling
