CHAPTER 2KNIVES IN THE NIGHT Other eyes had glimpsed that uncanny flash of green flame as well as had Carthalla’s. High on the crags that leaned like stony shelves from the cliffs of the mountains, dark riders with eyes like hawks had seen the flare of unexpected light where no light should be. Now, dismounting, they crept to the brink of the crag and peered down. Above, the sun-star Kylix, now sinking into the west in a sea of scarlet flame, painted the upper parts of the mountains with fierce gold. Below, the foothills were drowned in purple shadows. But the eyes of the Riders of Khun were keen as the hunting-hawks they were named after, and soon they had searched out the figure of the tall cloaked man in black leather and the slender, golden girl.
