Chapter 2: The Initial Shock

300 Words
Sophie’s decision to leave the house was a gut instinct—a reaction to the overwhelming wave of betrayal that had consumed her. Her mind was still reeling, trying to make sense of everything. She didn’t know where she was going, but she needed distance. The heavy rain pelted her face as she stepped outside, and the coldness of the night seemed to match the numbness spreading inside her. She called her best friend, Claire, not knowing what to say. When Claire picked up, Sophie’s voice was strained, fragile. “Can I stay with you tonight?” “Of course,” Claire replied instantly. “Come over.” The car ride felt like a blur. The streets were empty, the world quiet under the heavy downpour. Sophie didn’t think about Ethan or their home. She just needed to escape the weight of the truth that now pressed down on her. At Claire’s apartment, Sophie collapsed onto the couch, her mind a whirlwind of confusion and anger. Claire had made her tea and sat beside her, offering a listening ear, but Sophie wasn’t ready to talk. She couldn’t put the pieces together just yet. Instead, she allowed herself to sit in silence, trying to process the utter destruction she had just discovered. Claire gently asked, “Do you want to talk about it?” Sophie shook her head, her face buried in her hands. She didn’t know where to start. The pain was too fresh, too raw. “What am I supposed to do now, Claire?” Sophie’s voice cracked. “He’s been lying to me... for God knows how long.” Claire’s eyes softened with understanding, but she didn’t press her. Instead, she quietly stayed by Sophie’s side, allowing her the space to feel the full weight of the betrayal.
