KNOX
I waited till her breathing was steady before leaving her side.
I signalled my boys to come in. “Anyone other than the doctor shouldn't walk in here. Call me if she moves. Even if it's a finger.”
Leo gave a simple nod.
I hurried off to the back entrance where Rivers was waiting for me. The drive to the warehouse took less than thirty minutes.
Inside smelled like iron and stale food. I never involved myself in this part of the family business, but when I saw the outcome of what that nurse did to Talia, I knew I needed to call Holt.
I single bulb was hanging over the metallic chair that the nurse sat on. Her face was already messed up, his eyes filled with tears.
Reyes stood behind her, his arms folded.
I didn't sit, I stared at her from a distance, my hands in my pockets.
“Say it again,” I said, my voice coming out Lower than expected. “From the beginning.”
She swallowed hard. “ I…already told your guy before,” she said, pointing to Reyes. “A woman walked up to me at the Bus station two nights ago, she wore a black hood and covered her neck with a Scarf. She knew the patient's room number, she gave me twenty grand and a preloaded syringe, and asked me to swap it for her analgesic. She said the patient was really dangerous and she woke up again, people were going to die.” she cried.
“I swear, I wouldn't have done it, but my son needs surgery. My hospital salary wouldn't cover it.” she sobbed.
“What did she sound like?” I asked.
“She didn't say much, but she sounded like Eastern European.”
I turned to Reyes who shrugged. She obviously said the same thing.
“How sure are you?” I asked.
Before she could respond, Reyes’s hand was around her throat, causing her to choke on her words.
I signalled Reyes to let her go and he did. I crouched in front of her, her eyes meeting mine. She flinched at first glance.
“Anything else I need to know?”
She shook her head nervously, “pl..ease. Please. I have kids.” she sobbed.
I got up, walking out as Reyes and Rivers followed me.
Someone who had access to hospital schedules. Someone who knew Ian and Talia.
Someone who thought of Talia as a threat and needed to be eliminated.
The only person coming to my mind was Talia, because she had an affair with Ian.
I picked up my phone and dialed Dante. “Si,” he answered.
“It was a woman. No exact description, Eastern European accent. I think she knows both Talia and that bastard. My take, it's his wife. Isla Kane.” I said.
“Hmm, she probably wants to play dirty,” he responded.
“Or maybe someone is working for her. Just do what you do best, send your men. I owe you one” I assured.
He laughed. “Already working on it. You really don't want to be involved in this little brother? You could just drop the bloodline bomb and watch how things turn in your favour.”
“Not yet. Let him enjoy. I need to watch him lose everything he thought was his.” I said.
“Knox, patience wouldn't earn you shit.” he hissed.
“Yet I have a whole empire, still the top three richest men in New york,” I said.
“Prick.” he laughed, ending the call.
As we drove back to the hospital, I stared outside, watching the heavy rain pour. It was on a heavy rain night like this that I was adopted—the night I left her.
I finally got to her room through the vip elevator. I dismissed Leo and Craig, shutting the door behind me.
I stared at her thin frame under the blanket.
She had lost so much weight, but at least she looked peaceful sleeping. The monitors were still beeping so much.
I just wish I could ease her pain.
I sat there, watching her, imagining what would have happened if that night hadn't come.
I rubbed her hands, hoping she would wake up quickly.
I didn't know how much time had passed before the door opened slowly behind me.
The doctor walked in, his head down, his hands trembling.
I knew he must have been shaken by what happened earlier. I wanted to apologize, but his expression looked like he carried bad news.
He glanced at Talia, his expression changing to pity, then to me.
“Mr Whitaker,” he muttered, his fingers trembling. “I'm sorry to bother you, but we've finished the blood panel and ultrasound analysis, considering the incident.”
My mind was totally blank. The machine was still beeping so she was still alive.
“And?” I asked, standing up.
He staggered back. “The whole trauma from the gruesome accident and fentanyl derivative pushed into her system—it was too much stress on her body..” he swallowed.
“f*****g speak!” I snapped.
“She…She lost the baby. It was an early pregnancy. Too early.” he managed.
His words hit me hard, I stretched my hands behind me, searching for support to lean on.
Pregnancy
She was pregnant.
“How early?” I asked.
“Four weeks. The highest stage of risk is in these early weeks. Because the embryo is still tiny. I doubt she was aware she was pregnant.” he said.
“I’m really sorry. The drugs were too strong.” he shook his head.
I couldn't even speak. I turned to Talia, watching my angel sleep without knowing that she had something growing inside her and it's no more.”
Ian’s child.
It just had to be. She spent five years of her life with him.
“She needs to be told when she wakes up. We’ll watch her for more complications, but physically she should recover.”
I just nodded. I turned to her, my elbow on the bed rail as I smoothed out her hair.
How much had she gone through?
My phone rang almost immediately.
“What?” I groaned.
“Check the news,” Dante said, with amusement in his tone.
I turned it on, reducing the volume.
The reporter was in front of Kane’s Tech, with multiple people and Crowds with cardboard boards above their heads.
“He’s a Thief.” “He needs to be locked up.” “Remove him.” they were chanting.
Then the news headline came on.
KANE TECH COLLAPSES: BILLIONAIRE CEO IAN KANE ACCUSED OF MASSIVE EMBEZZLEMENT AS STOCKS PLUNGE
Star Rise News carried it, and people dropped their thoughts. Everything was going so fast.
“THIEF IN A SUIT”: INVESTORS DEMAND IAN KANE’S IMMEDIATE REMOVAL FROM KANE TECH.
Another news channel carried.
I went online immediately, and the internet was going crazy.
Some wanted to know if his wife was the whistleblower.
The stocks were dropping faster than anything I'd seen.
“Right about time.” 1 exhaled.
