Chapter 6 — The Name She Feared For several seconds, neither of them spoke. The name remained between them like a ghost from a life Daniel had never known existed. Victor. Daniel looked at Emma. Then at Sophia. Then back at Emma. "Who is Victor?" Emma's lips parted, but no answer came. Daniel's patience was beginning to disappear. "Seven years ago, you left me without an explanation." He took a slow breath. "Tonight, someone throws a photograph through a window, threatens you, and suddenly I hear a name I've never heard before." His eyes hardened. "You're going to tell me everything." Emma looked down. "I wish I could." "That's not an answer." "It's the only one I have." Daniel stepped closer. "Emma, I'm not the same man you left seven years ago." "I know." "I can protect myself." "I know." "Then stop protecting me from the truth." Emma finally looked at him. Her eyes were full of tears. "That's exactly what I'm afraid of." Daniel stared at her. "Afraid of what?" "That you'll try to save me." His expression softened. "And what's wrong with that?" "Because that's how this started." Daniel frowned. "What started?" Emma turned away. Seven years ago, she had made a promise. She had promised never to tell Daniel the truth. But that promise was beginning to cost them both too much. --- Seven Years Ago Emma sat across from Victor in a small café. Rain tapped against the windows. Victor placed a folder on the table. "You have until midnight." Emma stared at him. "What happens if I refuse?" Victor calmly closed the folder. "Then Daniel learns everything." Her heart stopped. "What everything?" Victor leaned forward. "Everything his father has been hiding." Emma swallowed. "And what happens then?" Victor smiled faintly. "His family's company collapses." Emma's hands tightened around the cup in front of her. "You can't do that." "I don't have to." Victor pushed a photograph toward her. It showed Daniel standing beside his father outside the Hartwell headquarters. "His father signed an agreement years ago." Emma looked at the document. "I don't understand." "You don't need to." Victor leaned back. "You only need to understand one thing." Emma looked up. "Daniel's future depends on you." Her heart pounded. "What do you want me to do?" Victor's answer was simple. "Leave him." Emma shook her head. "No." "Then watch him lose everything." "You wouldn't." Victor's expression became cold. "You'd be surprised what people are willing to do when money, power, and reputation are involved." Emma pushed the folder away. "I won't hurt him." Victor smiled. "You won't have to." He stood. "All you have to do is make him believe you don't love him." Emma looked at him in horror. "And if I refuse?" Victor stopped beside her. "Then Daniel gets the truth." He leaned closer. "And when the truth comes out, people will come looking for someone to blame." Emma's eyes filled with tears. "Why me?" Victor looked at her for a long moment. "Because you're the only person Daniel would destroy himself for." Then he walked away. Emma sat alone. Her hands trembled. And for the first time, she understood something terrifying. Victor didn't need to threaten Daniel. He only needed to threaten her. Because Emma would do anything to keep Daniel safe. Even if it meant making him hate her. --- Present Day Emma blinked, returning to the conference room. Daniel was still watching her. "You remembered something." She shook her head. "Nothing." Daniel gave a quiet, painful laugh. "You still do that." "Do what?" "Lie when you're afraid." Emma looked away. Before Daniel could say anything else, Sophia stepped between them. "Emma needs to go home." Daniel looked at her. "She's not going anywhere alone." Emma immediately shook her head. "No." Daniel turned toward her. "No?" "I can take care of myself." "I know." "Then let me." Daniel's expression softened. "I already let you go once." Emma's heart skipped. "I'm not making that mistake again." She couldn't answer. Sophia looked at Daniel. "There's something you need to know." Emma immediately turned. "Sophia." But Sophia continued. "Victor wasn't working alone." Daniel's expression changed. "What?" Emma closed her eyes. Sophia whispered, "There was someone inside the Hartwell family helping him." Silence. Daniel stared at her. "Who?" Sophia shook her head. "We don't know." Daniel looked at Emma. "You knew?" Emma's silence was enough. His face fell. "All these years..." His voice became quieter. "You knew someone from my family was involved?" "I suspected." "Who?" "I never found out." Daniel stepped away. For the first time, Emma saw something in his eyes that frightened her more than anger. Doubt. Not doubt about her. Doubt about everyone. His father. His family. His entire past. Then Daniel's phone rang. He looked at the screen. Dad. Nobody spoke. Daniel answered. "Hello?" His father's voice came through. "Daniel, where are you?" "At the office." A pause. Then Richard Hart asked: "Is Emma with you?" Daniel slowly looked at Emma. She went pale. His father continued. "Daniel, listen to me carefully." "What?" "Do not trust her." Daniel's eyes narrowed. "Why?" Another long silence. Then his father's voice dropped to a whisper. "Because seven years ago, she wasn't the one who betrayed you." Daniel froze. Emma stopped breathing. Richard continued. "She was the one we were trying to protect you from." The call suddenly ended. Daniel slowly lowered his phone. Emma stared at him. "What did he say?" Daniel looked at her. His face was unreadable. "Maybe it's time you tell me the truth." Emma's eyes filled with tears. "I've been trying to." "Then start now." She took a trembling breath. "I can't." "Why?" Emma looked toward the broken window. Then back at Daniel. "Because the person who betrayed you seven years ago..." She swallowed hard. "...is still close to you." Daniel's blood ran cold. "Who?" Emma didn't answer. Outside, a black car stopped across the street. The driver's window slowly lowered. A man watched the building. Then he smiled. Inside the conference room, Daniel's phone vibrated again. A new message appeared. Ask your father what happened to Daniel's mother. Daniel stared at the screen. His face went pale. Because his mother had died seven years ago. And for the first time, he wondered if her death had anything to do with Emma's disappearance. To be continued...
