Chapter 3 — The Secret Between Them
Emma didn't sleep that night.
The envelope remained on her desk.
She had opened it more times than she could count, hoping that somehow the words inside would change.
They didn't.
The first photograph showed Daniel standing outside a building she recognized.
His family's company.
The second photograph showed a man she had never met.
The third showed Daniel shaking hands with him.
Then there were documents.
Contracts.
Financial records.
Names.
Numbers.
And one sentence that kept haunting her:
If Daniel continues with the agreement, his family will lose everything.
Emma pressed her hands against her face.
"No..."
She didn't understand.
Daniel had never told her about any agreement.
Why would he?
And why had that stranger given these things to her instead of Daniel?
Her phone suddenly rang.
She nearly dropped it.
Daniel.
She stared at his name.
Her heart wanted her to answer.
Her mind told her not to.
She answered anyway.
"Hello?"
"Emma?"
His voice immediately softened something inside her.
"Yes."
"Where were you?"
She closed her eyes.
"Home."
"You weren't at the café."
Emma froze.
"You knew?"
"I saw you."
Her heart stopped.
"You saw me?"
"I was across the street."
She didn't know what to say.
Daniel continued.
"You looked frightened."
"I'm fine."
"Emma."
She hated the way he said her name.
Because he knew when she was lying.
"I said I'm fine."
There was silence.
Then Daniel asked quietly,
"Did someone talk to you?"
Emma looked at the envelope.
"Why would you ask that?"
"Because I've been receiving strange messages."
Her heart began beating faster.
"What kind of messages?"
"Nothing important."
"Daniel..."
"I'll handle it."
"No."
The word escaped before she could stop herself.
Daniel became quiet.
Emma swallowed.
"Don't handle everything alone."
A small laugh came through the phone.
"You sound like you used to."
Her eyes filled with tears.
"I remember how you used to tell me that."
"I remember everything."
Emma's breathing became unsteady.
She wanted to tell him.
She wanted to tell him about the envelope.
About the photographs.
About the documents.
But the stranger's final words returned to her.
If you love him, you'll know what to do.
"Daniel..."
"Yes?"
"If one day..."
She stopped.
"If one day what?"
"If one day I had to leave..."
Silence.
"Why are you talking like that?"
Emma looked down.
"Just answer me."
Daniel's voice became serious.
"I wouldn't let you."
Her tears finally fell.
"You can't stop someone from leaving."
"I can try."
"Daniel..."
"I love you, Emma."
She covered her mouth.
He had no idea how much those words hurt tonight.
"I love you too."
"Then don't disappear on me."
Emma closed her eyes.
"I won't."
It was the first lie she had ever told him.
---
The next morning, Emma went back to the café.
The mysterious man was already there.
"You came."
"You knew I would."
"I knew you loved him."
Emma placed the envelope on the table.
"What is this?"
"The truth."
"No. It's part of the truth."
The man smiled.
"You're smarter than I expected."
"Who are you?"
"Someone who wants Daniel to survive what is coming."
Emma stared at him.
"Then tell me everything."
He leaned back.
"Daniel's father made a deal seven years ago."
"What kind of deal?"
"A business arrangement that could save the company."
Emma frowned.
"And Daniel?"
"He was never supposed to know."
"Why?"
"Because the agreement requires something from him."
Emma's heart sank.
"What?"
The man looked directly at her.
"You."
Emma stopped breathing.
"Me?"
"Daniel's father knows how much his son loves you."
Emma stared at him in disbelief.
"What does that have to do with the company?"
"Everything."
The man pushed another document toward her.
"Read the final page."
Emma's hands trembled as she turned the pages.
At the bottom was a signature.
She recognized it immediately.
Daniel's father's signature.
Below it was another name.
A family she knew.
One of the most powerful business families in the city.
And beneath the agreement was a condition.
Emma read it once.
Then again.
Her face went pale.
"No."
The man watched her carefully.
"Now you understand."
"This can't be real."
"It is."
"What happens if Daniel refuses?"
"The company collapses."
Emma looked up.
"And if he accepts?"
"He loses something else."
"What?"
The man didn't answer.
Emma stood.
"Tell me."
He finally said,
"His freedom."
Emma felt dizzy.
"What does that mean?"
"It means Daniel will be forced into a future he doesn't want."
She stared at him.
"And where do I fit into this?"
The man gave her a sad smile.
"You're the reason he will refuse."
Emma understood.
If Daniel knew the truth, he would fight.
He would choose her.
He would risk everything.
And that was exactly what the people behind the agreement wanted to prevent.
Emma sat down again.
"What do you want me to do?"
The man leaned forward.
"Leave him."
Her eyes filled with tears.
"That's all?"
"Make him believe you don't love him anymore."
Emma shook her head.
"No."
"Then watch him lose everything."
The room became silent.
Emma looked at the photograph of Daniel on the table.
His smile.
His eyes.
The man she loved.
The future they had planned.
The little house.
The garden.
The roses.
Everything suddenly felt like a dream that someone else had decided to take away.
"What if I refuse?"
The man stood.
"Then Daniel pays the price."
He walked toward the door.
Before leaving, he stopped.
"There is one more thing."
Emma looked up.
"What?"
"Don't tell Daniel about this meeting."
"Why?"
"Because if he discovers what you're doing, he'll come after you."
The door closed behind him.
Emma remained alone.
She looked down at the document.
Then at the photograph.
Her tears fell onto Daniel's face.
"I'm sorry."
She whispered the words again.
"I'm so sorry."
---
That evening, Daniel found Emma beneath the old acacia tree.
She was sitting alone.
He approached quietly.
"You've been avoiding me."
Emma looked up.
"I've been busy."
"You're lying."
She looked away.
Daniel sat beside her.
For a while, neither spoke.
Then he reached for her hand.
Emma almost pulled away.
Almost.
But she couldn't.
Daniel smiled.
"You still remember this place?"
"Of course."
"This is where you told me you loved me."
Emma smiled through her tears.
"I remember."
"And this is where I promised you I'd always find my way back."
She looked at him.
"Daniel..."
"What?"
She wanted to tell him everything.
Instead, she asked,
"What if the person you love becomes the reason your life falls apart?"
Daniel frowned.
"Then I would choose her anyway."
Emma's heart broke.
"Even if she hurt you?"
"Even then."
"Even if she left?"
Daniel looked directly into her eyes.
"I'd wait."
Emma couldn't hold herself together anymore.
She stood quickly.
"I have to go."
Daniel caught her wrist.
"Emma."
She froze.
"Look at me."
She slowly turned.
His eyes were filled with love.
And trust.
The very things she was about to destroy.
"Whatever is happening," he said softly, "you can tell me."
Emma stared at him.
Then she pulled her hand away.
"No, Daniel."
"Why?"
"Because..."
Her voice trembled.
"...I don't love you anymore."
Daniel went completely still.
Emma turned before he could see her tears.
She walked away.
Behind her, Daniel didn't follow.
He simply stood beneath the tree where they had once promised forever.
And for the first time, he believed the woman he loved had finally stopped loving him.
Emma kept walking.
Every step felt like she was tearing her own heart apart.
But she didn't turn around.
Because if she did...
**she knew she would run back to him.**
And seven years later, Daniel would remember that night as the night Emma Carter broke his heart.
But he would never know the real reason.
She didn't leave because she stopped loving him.
She left because she loved him enough to let him hate her.
