Chapter 5 — The Man Who Came Back
Sophia's words seemed to echo through the room.
"The man who made you leave seven years ago."
Emma couldn't breathe.
For seven years, she had convinced herself that he was gone.
That the past had finally buried itself.
That the threats, the fear, and the terrible choice she had made were nothing more than memories that could never reach her again.
She had been wrong.
Daniel looked at Sophia.
"Who is he?"
Sophia didn't answer.
"Who is he?" Daniel repeated, his voice harder this time.
Sophia glanced at Emma.
Emma shook her head.
Not here.
Not now.
But Daniel saw the exchange.
His eyes narrowed.
"You both know something."
"Daniel—" Emma began.
"No."
He turned toward her.
"Not this time."
His voice wasn't angry.
That somehow made it worse.
"For seven years, you gave me nothing. No explanation. No truth. Not even a goodbye that made sense."
Emma lowered her eyes.
"And now someone walks back into your life, and suddenly you look terrified."
Daniel stepped closer.
"I'm not leaving until you tell me why."
Emma's lips trembled.
"Daniel, you don't understand."
"Then help me understand."
She looked into his eyes.
The same eyes she had loved when they were young.
The same eyes she had tried desperately to forget.
"I was trying to protect you."
Daniel gave a bitter smile.
"That's what you said seven years ago."
Emma swallowed.
"And you still don't believe me."
"I believe you loved me."
She froze.
Daniel continued.
"But I don't believe you trusted me enough to let me fight beside you."
Those words hurt more than anger ever could.
Because they were true.
Emma had made the decision alone.
She had carried the burden alone.
And she had left Daniel believing he wasn't strong enough to face the truth.
Suddenly, Sophia's phone rang.
She looked at the screen.
Her face changed.
"Who is it?" Emma asked.
Sophia didn't answer.
The phone rang again.
Then stopped.
A message appeared.
Sophia opened it.
Her hands began shaking.
Emma noticed.
"Sophia?"
Slowly, Sophia turned the phone toward her.
There was only one sentence.
Tell Emma I'm done waiting.
Emma's face went pale.
She knew immediately.
"He found me."
Daniel looked at her.
"Who?"
Emma didn't answer.
Daniel reached for the phone.
Sophia pulled it away.
"Don't."
"Why?"
"Because you don't know what you're getting involved in."
Daniel's eyes hardened.
"I've already been involved for seven years."
Silence filled the room.
Then Daniel looked at Emma.
"Is this why you left me?"
Emma closed her eyes.
She wanted to tell him everything.
But fear was stronger.
Not fear for herself.
Fear for him.
"You need to stay away from me."
Daniel shook his head.
"No."
"Please."
"I did that once."
His voice cracked.
"I spent seven years staying away from you."
He stepped closer.
"I'm not doing it again."
Emma's tears fell.
"You don't know what you're saying."
"Then tell me."
"I can't."
"Why?"
"Because if I tell you, you could lose everything."
Daniel stared at her.
"My company?"
Emma shook her head.
"Your life."
Daniel went completely still.
Sophia looked toward the window.
Outside, the parking lot was almost empty.
Almost.
A black car remained parked across the street.
Its headlights were off.
Someone was sitting inside.
Watching.
Sophia whispered,
"Emma..."
Emma turned toward the window.
She saw the car.
Her blood ran cold.
Daniel noticed.
"Is that him?"
Emma didn't answer.
Daniel walked toward the window.
"Don't!" Emma shouted.
He stopped.
For a moment, nobody moved.
Then the black car started its engine.
It slowly pulled away.
Daniel watched it disappear into the darkness.
"Why did you stop me?"
Emma's voice trembled.
"Because seven years ago, I watched someone destroy everything around me just to make me leave you."
Daniel turned.
"Who?"
Emma looked at him.
"Someone who knew exactly how much I loved you."
Daniel's expression changed.
"And he used that against you."
Emma nodded.
"He told me that if I stayed with you, you would lose your family, your future..."
She hesitated.
"...and possibly your life."
Daniel's face hardened.
"Who was he?"
Emma whispered,
"I never knew his name."
Sophia suddenly looked at her.
"That's not true."
Emma stared at her.
Sophia's eyes filled with tears.
"You knew his name, Emma."
Emma's heart stopped.
"Don't."
"But Daniel deserves to know."
"Please, Sophia."
Daniel looked between them.
"Tell me."
Sophia took a deep breath.
"He called himself—"
A loud crash interrupted her.
Everyone jumped.
The conference room window shattered.
Glass exploded across the floor.
Emma screamed.
Daniel immediately pulled her behind him.
Sophia dropped to the floor.
For several seconds, there was complete silence.
Then Daniel noticed something lying among the broken glass.
A small black envelope.
He carefully picked it up.
His name was written across the front.
DANIEL HART
Emma stared at it in horror.
"No..."
Daniel looked at her.
"What?"
"Don't open it."
He stared at the envelope.
"Why?"
"Because I know what's inside."
Daniel slowly opened it.
Inside was a single photograph.
His face changed.
Emma covered her mouth.
It was a photograph taken seven years ago.
Emma and Daniel beneath the old acacia tree.
But someone else was standing in the background.
A man.
Watching them.
On the back of the photograph were six words:
You should have stayed away from her.
Daniel slowly looked at Emma.
For the first time, the anger in his eyes disappeared.
It was replaced by something much more dangerous.
Determination.
"Emma."
She looked at him.
"Who is this man?"
Emma stared at the photograph.
Her tears began falling.
And finally, after seven years of silence, she whispered the name she had tried so hard to forget.
"Victor."
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
"Who is Victor?"
Emma looked at him.
"He is the reason I left you."
She paused.
Then whispered:
**"And he's the reason I came back."**
Outside, somewhere in the darkness, a phone rang.
Victor answered.
A quiet voice spoke on the other end.
"She told him."
Victor smiled.
"Good."
"Should we proceed?"
Victor looked toward the Hartwell building.
"No."
He smiled again.
"Let them come looking for me."
To be continued...
