Chapter 8 — The Place Where It All Began
Daniel stared at his father's name on the phone.
His hand tightened around it.
“Dad,” he said, his voice low and controlled, “what does that mean?”
There was silence on the other end.
Then Richard Hart finally spoke.
“You need to leave the building.”
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
“Where is Emma?”
Another silence.
“Dad!”
“I don't know.”
“You're lying.”
Richard exhaled heavily.
“I wish I were.”
Daniel looked toward the empty conference room.
Only minutes ago, Emma had been standing there.
Now she was gone.
Her phone lay on the table.
Her chair was slightly pulled back, as if she had stood up suddenly.
Nothing else appeared disturbed.
No broken furniture.
No blood.
Nothing.
And somehow, that frightened Daniel more.
“Who took her?” he asked.
“I don't know.”
“Then tell me what you do know.”
Richard didn't answer.
Daniel's patience snapped.
“You knew something seven years ago. You knew my mother was afraid. You knew Emma didn't leave me because she stopped loving me.”
Richard's voice became barely a whisper.
“Daniel…”
“Tell me the truth.”
“I should have told you years ago.”
“Yes.”
“I was trying to protect you.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
Those words.
Again.
Always the same excuse.
Everyone had been trying to protect him.
His mother.
Emma.
His father.
And somehow, all that protection had left him with seven years of pain.
“Where is Emma?” he asked again.
Richard finally said,
“Go to the old acacia tree.”
Daniel froze.
The old acacia tree.
The place where Emma and he had first dreamed about their future.
The place where she had told him she loved him.
The place where she had broken his heart.
“Why?”
“Because if he wants you to find her…”
Richard paused.
“…that's where he'll send you.”
“Who?”
But the line went dead.
Daniel immediately called back.
No answer.
He grabbed his coat and headed for the elevator.
Then stopped.
Something caught his attention.
On the conference table was a small white envelope.
He hadn't noticed it before.
His name was written across it.
**DANIEL.**
He opened it.
Inside was a single photograph.
Emma.
Standing beneath the old acacia tree.
But this photograph was different.
It had been taken recently.
Very recently.
Emma was wearing the same clothes she had been wearing tonight.
Daniel turned the photograph over.
There were four words written on the back.
COME WHERE WE STARTED.
His heart pounded.
For seven years, he had imagined seeing Emma again.
Now that he had found her, someone was using their memories against them.
Daniel walked out of the building.
---
The old acacia tree stood at the edge of the city's oldest park.
It had survived storms, construction, and years of neglect.
Daniel parked several meters away.
The park was almost empty.
A cold wind moved through the branches.
He looked at the tree.
For a moment, he wasn't a successful businessman.
He wasn't the man who had spent seven years building walls around his heart.
He was simply Daniel.
The young man who had once believed that love could overcome anything.
He remembered Emma laughing beneath the tree.
He remembered her stealing his coffee.
He remembered the way she used to lean against his shoulder whenever she was tired.
He remembered the promise he had made.
Whatever happens, we'll face it together.
And then he remembered the night she left.
The words she had spoken.
I never loved you the way you thought I did.
For seven years, he had believed those words.
Tonight, he finally understood they had been a lie.
A painful lie.
A lie she had chosen to make him hate her.
Daniel walked closer.
“Emma?”
Nothing.
Only the wind.
Then his phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
He answered.
“Where is she?”
A man's voice replied.
“You came alone?”
“Yes.”
“Good.”
“Where's Emma?”
“You always were impatient.”
Daniel's jaw tightened.
“Victor.”
A quiet laugh came through the phone.
“You finally learned my name.”
“Where is Emma?”
“You should be asking yourself another question.”
“What?”
“Why did your mother die?”
Daniel's breathing stopped.
“Don't you dare bring my mother into this.”
“Your mother was closer to the truth than you realize.”
“What did you do to her?”
Victor was silent for a moment.
Then—
“I didn't kill Margaret Hart.”
Daniel stared into the darkness.
“Then who did?”
Victor answered calmly.
“Ask your father.”
The call ended.
Daniel immediately turned toward the road.
Headlights appeared in the distance.
A black car slowly approached.
It stopped.
The driver's door opened.
No one stepped out.
Daniel reached inside his coat, instinctively preparing himself.
Then the passenger door opened.
A woman stepped out.
Daniel's heart nearly stopped.
“Emma…”
She looked frightened.
Her hands were trembling.
There was a small cut near her forehead.
But she was alive.
Daniel ran toward her.
Emma took one step backward.
“Don't.”
Daniel stopped.
“Emma, what happened?”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I shouldn't have come here.”
“You didn't come here.”
She looked toward the black car.
“They brought me.”
Daniel looked at the vehicle.
“Who?”
Emma's voice trembled.
“I don't know.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“Are you hurt?”
“Not badly.”
“Then come with me.”
She shook her head.
“No.”
“Emma…”
“You have to leave.”
“I've spent seven years waiting for you. I'm not leaving you now.”
She looked at him.
For the first time, Daniel saw something he had never seen in her eyes before.
Not fear for herself.
Fear for him.
“They know about us,” she whispered.
“Who?”
“Everyone.”
Daniel frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Emma looked toward the black car again.
“They know what your mother discovered.”
“What did she discover?”
Emma's eyes filled with tears.
“She discovered that the agreement wasn't about your father's company.”
Daniel went still.
“Then what was it about?”
Emma swallowed.
“You.”
Silence.
Daniel stared at her.
“What?”
Emma stepped closer.
“The agreement was created because someone wanted control over you.”
Daniel felt a chill run through him.
“Who?”
Before Emma could answer, the black car's engine suddenly started.
Emma grabbed Daniel's arm.
“Run!”
The car accelerated.
Daniel pulled Emma toward him.
The vehicle sped past them, tires screaming against the pavement.
Daniel watched it disappear.
Then he turned to Emma.
“Who was inside?”
“I don't know.”
“You said they brought you here.”
“Yes.”
“Then how did you escape?”
Emma didn't answer.
Daniel noticed something.
A small red mark around her wrist.
Someone had tied her hands.
His anger rose.
“Emma…”
She looked down.
“I couldn't tell you before.”
“Tell me now.”
She shook her head.
“It's not safe.”
“Nothing about this is safe anymore.”
Daniel took her hands gently.
“I need the truth.”
Emma looked into his eyes.
For seven years, she had carried the secret alone.
Tonight, something inside her finally broke.
“I left you because of your mother.”
Daniel stared at her.
“What?”
“Your mother came to me the night before she died.”
His face went pale.
“What did she tell you?”
Emma's lips trembled.
“She told me someone inside your family was planning to destroy you.”
Daniel's heart pounded.
“Who?”
Emma opened her mouth.
But before she could speak—
A gunshot echoed through the park.
Emma screamed.
Daniel pulled her down.
They fell behind the old stone bench.
Another shot struck the tree above them.
Daniel covered Emma with his body.
“Stay down!”
Emma was shaking.
Daniel looked around.
Nothing.
Only darkness.
Then his phone vibrated.
A message.
YOU SHOULD HAVE LISTENED TO YOUR FATHER.
Daniel stared at the screen.
Another message arrived.
NOW ASK EMMA WHAT SHE WAS HOLDING THE NIGHT YOUR MOTHER DIED.
Daniel slowly turned toward Emma.
She had gone completely pale.
“Emma…”
She looked at him.
“What were you holding?”
Tears rolled down her cheeks.
For a long moment, she said nothing.
Then she reached into the lining of her coat.
Her fingers pulled out a small, worn envelope.
Daniel recognized the handwriting immediately.
His mother's handwriting.
Emma handed it to him.
“I've kept this for seven years.”
Daniel stared at the envelope.
“Why didn't you give it to me?”
Emma whispered,
“Because your mother told me that if I ever gave it to you…”
She looked toward the darkness.
“…they would come for you.”
Daniel slowly opened the envelope.
Inside was a single handwritten letter.
He unfolded it.
The first line made his blood run cold.
My dearest Daniel,
If Emma is giving you this letter, then I am already gone.
Daniel's hands began to shake.
He continued reading.
Then his eyes stopped at the final sentence.
His mother had written:
The person you must never trust is the person you call family.
Daniel looked up.
Emma was crying.
And somewhere in the darkness, a phone began to ring.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Daniel slowly stood.
The sound was coming from behind the old acacia tree.
He looked at Emma.
“Stay here.”
He walked toward the ringing phone.
Each step felt heavier than the last.
When he reached the tree, he saw a second phone lying on the ground.
It was ringing.
Daniel picked it up.
The screen displayed one name.
DAD.
Daniel answered.
“Dad?”
Richard's voice came through.
But this time, he wasn't alone.
Daniel heard another voice in the background.
A voice he had heard before.
A voice he never expected to hear again.
Victor.
And Victor whispered:
“It's time you learned what your father did to your mother.”
