I was sitting on the floor of the living room, surrounded by open textbooks I had not actually read in three weeks. Chloe was on the sofa painting her toenails electric blue. She paused, looked down at me. "You're trying too hard." "What?" "If you have to say he's safe out loud, it means he's boring." "He isn't boring," I said. My voice had no punch. "Liam is steady. He volunteers at a shelter. He listens when I talk. He doesn't drive a car that costs more than this entire building." Chloe groaned. "Yeah, well. Steady is for when you're forty and want to retire.
