The quietness in the room was actually crushing me.
My heart had stopped somewhere between my throat and my ribs, and I just stood there, frozen, staring at Chloe. She had this flushed, grinning face that made my stomach do backflips for all the wrong reasons. Next to me, Gideon's hand went totally limp in mine. He looked like he'd just seen a glitch in the matrix.
Then, a snort.
Chloe threw her head back and literally cackled, clutching her stomach like it was the funniest thing in the world. "Oh my god, your faces! You look like you've seen a ghost. I'm kidding! I am totally kidding!"
Air rushed back into my lungs so fast it actually made me dizzy.
I forced this shaky, crooked laugh and reached for the wine glass Jeffrey had poured. My hands were trembling.
