Chapter 5: The Missing Girl

1556 Words
The convoy sped through the streets of Accra beneath a darkening sky. Amara sat beside Kael in the backseat of the black SUV, her hands clenched tightly in her lap while headlights streaked across the windows. Nobody inside the vehicle spoke. The silence felt suffocating. Kael stared at the tablet in his hand, studying the map with frightening focus while one of his security men updated him through an earpiece. “We lost signal near the eastern bypass,” the man said from the front seat. “But witnesses saw Selena’s car parked near an abandoned warehouse district.” Amara’s stomach twisted painfully. “Why would she go there?” “No idea yet,” the guard answered. Kael’s gaze lifted toward the driver. “Increase speed.” “Yes, sir.” The vehicle accelerated instantly. Amara looked sideways at Kael. Even now, his expression remained controlled. Cold. Calculated. But beneath that control, tension radiated from him like a storm waiting to explode. “You really think she was taken?” Amara asked quietly. Kael didn’t look at her. “I think someone wanted her to disappear.” “That’s not the same thing.” “No,” he agreed. “It’s worse.” Fear crawled deeper into her chest. She glanced out the window again, watching familiar city streets slowly disappear as they drove farther from the wealthy parts of Accra. The buildings became older. The roads emptier. Darkness settled more heavily around them. Finally, the convoy turned into an abandoned industrial area lined with rusted warehouses and broken streetlights. Amara’s heartbeat quickened. This place looked dangerous even in daylight. Tonight it looked terrifying. The SUVs stopped abruptly. Before Amara could move, Kael caught her wrist gently but firmly. “Stay inside the vehicle.” “What?” “That wasn’t a suggestion.” “I’m not sitting here while” “You will stay here.” His voice sharpened enough to silence her instantly. For a moment, their eyes locked. Then Kael released her wrist and stepped out of the SUV. The cold night air rushed inside briefly before the door shut again. Amara watched through the tinted windows as Kael’s men spread through the area with weapons hidden beneath their jackets. Weapons. Her pulse stumbled. This wasn’t normal security. These people expected violence. Kael stood near the center of the road, tall and terrifying beneath the flashing headlights. A man approached him quickly from another vehicle. “There’s blood inside one of the warehouses,” the man reported. Amara’s breath caught. Blood? Kael’s expression became deadly calm. “Whose?” “Unknown.” He nodded once. “Search everything.” The men immediately obeyed. Amara pressed her fingers nervously against the seat. Every instinct screamed at her to stay inside. But Selena was out there somewhere. And despite everything between them, fear for her cousin overwhelmed caution. Before she could stop herself, Amara opened the SUV door quietly and stepped outside. The air smelled like rain, metal, and smoke. One of Kael’s guards noticed immediately. “Miss” “I’ll stay close,” she whispered. The guard looked conflicted before finally nodding. Amara moved carefully toward the warehouse entrance where Kael had disappeared moments earlier. Inside, darkness swallowed almost everything. Only flashlight beams cut through the shadows. Dust coated the floor. Broken crates lined the walls. And near the center of the room, Blood. Amara froze instantly. A dark stain spread across the concrete floor beside Selena’s handbag. Fear slammed into her chest so hard she nearly lost balance. Kael noticed her immediately. His expression darkened. “I told you to stay in the car.” Amara barely heard him. “That’s Selena’s bag…” Kael walked toward her quickly. “You shouldn’t be in here.” “Is that her blood?” “We don’t know yet.” Amara looked around desperately. “Selena!” she shouted suddenly. Her voice echoed through the warehouse. Nothing answered. Kael grabbed her arm before she could move farther. “Stop.” “Let go of me!” “This place hasn’t been cleared.” Fear and anger collided inside her. “She could be hurt!” “And if whoever did this is still nearby?” The words stopped her cold. Kael lowered his voice slightly. “You’re not helping her by becoming another target.” Before Amara could respond, one of the guards hurried toward them. “Sir.” Kael turned immediately. “We found this upstairs.” The guard handed over a phone. Selena’s phone. The screen was cracked badly, but still functioning. Kael unlocked it quickly. Then his expression changed. Dangerously. “What?” Amara demanded. He looked at her slowly. “There’s a message.” Her pulse quickened painfully. “What does it say?” Kael’s jaw tightened. “It says…” He paused briefly. “‘Wrong girl.’” The entire room went silent. Amara felt the blood drain from her face. Wrong girl. No. No, no, no. “They meant me,” she whispered. Nobody denied it. Kael’s eyes became colder than she had ever seen. “Get her out of here,” he ordered sharply. “I’m not leaving!” “You are now officially a target.” Fear wrapped tightly around her lungs. “This is insane…” Kael stepped closer. “No,” he said quietly. “This is planned.” Amara’s breathing became uneven. Someone tried to take her. Someone accidentally took Selena instead. The realization made her feel physically sick. Kael handed Selena’s phone back to the guard. “Find every security camera within five kilometers. I want footage, names, faces, everything.” “Yes, sir.” The men moved immediately. Amara stared at the bloodstain again, her chest tightening painfully. “What if she’s dead?” Kael looked at her carefully. “She’s alive.” “You can’t know that.” “No,” he admitted. “But if they realized they took the wrong person, she still has value alive.” The cold logic behind his words unsettled her deeply. Yet somehow… it also made sense. Kael gently guided her back toward the SUV. This time she didn’t resist. Her legs suddenly felt weak. The moment they returned to the vehicle, Kael locked the doors himself before speaking to the driver. “We’re moving locations.” “Where?” Amara asked quietly. “My private estate.” Fear flickered through her again. “Why?” “Because your family home is no longer safe.” The drive felt longer this time. Amara sat silently while her thoughts spiraled endlessly. Someone wanted her badly enough to kidnap another person by mistake. Why? What had her mother been involved in? And why did Kael already seem prepared for something like this? The convoy finally stopped outside enormous iron gates guarded by armed security. The estate beyond them looked less like a home and more like a fortress. High walls. Security cameras. Multiple guards. Kael noticed her expression. “You understand now.” Amara swallowed hard. “This is how you live?” “Yes.” “That’s not living.” Something strange crossed his face at her words. The gates opened slowly. Inside, the estate was breathtaking, with modern architecture surrounded by water features and perfectly trimmed gardens. But despite the beauty, the place felt isolated. Protected. Like a cage disguised as luxury. Kael led her inside personally. The mansion interior looked elegant but cold, filled with black marble, glass, and dim lighting. No family photographs. No warmth. Nothing personal. Amara wrapped her arms around herself slightly. “You live here alone?” “Yes.” The answer echoed through the enormous space. One of the staff members approached nervously. “Sir, the guest room is prepared.” Kael shook his head. “She’ll stay on the third floor.” The woman blinked in surprise but nodded quickly. “Yes, sir.” Amara frowned. “Why does that sound important?” Kael removed his watch calmly. “Because nobody stays on the third floor.” Before she could question him further, another guard entered quickly. “Sir, we traced the warehouse cameras.” Kael’s attention sharpened instantly. “And?” “There’s footage of Selena arriving.” The guard hesitated. “But she wasn’t alone.” Amara’s heartbeat stumbled. “Who was with her?” The guard looked uncomfortable now. “It appears she met someone willingly.” Kael’s expression darkened. “Show me.” The footage was played on a large screen in the office moments later. The grainy security video showed Selena stepping out of her car nervously. Then another black vehicle arrived. A man exited. Tall. Wearing dark clothing and a hood. Selena approached him willingly. They argued briefly. Then suddenly, The man grabbed her violently. Amara gasped. The footage cut out seconds later. “That’s him?” she whispered shakily. Kael stared at the frozen image intensely. Then his eyes narrowed. He recognized something. “You know who that is,” Amara realized. Kael stayed silent too long. Fear returned immediately. “Kael.” His jaw tightened. “That’s impossible.” “What is?” Finally, Kael looked at her. And for the first time since meeting him, He looked genuinely disturbed. “That man died three years ago.”
