SUMMER BREAK

1343 Words
Edmund stood outside Sydney's apartment, knocking gently on the door. After a few minutes, it creaked open, and Sydney's puffy eyes met his concerned gaze. "Hey, I was starting to worry," Edmund said, stepping inside. "What's wrong? You've been crying." Sydney forced a weak smile. "I'm fine, just a little tired." Edmond's eyes narrowed. "Sydney, I can tell when you're not okay. Please, talk to me." She sighed, her shoulders slumping. "It's just... everything. My scholarship, my family... it's all falling apart." Edmond's expression softened. "Tell me." Sydney hesitated, but his gentle prodding encouraged her to open up. "I got a scholarship to study abroad, but the government stopped paying. I don't know how I'll afford tuition, food... anything. And my family... My little brother went blind because we couldn't afford surgery. I feel so lost, Edmund." Edmund's eyes filled with compassion. "Oh, Sydney, I'm so sorry. That must be incredibly tough for you." Sydney's voice cracked, and she burst into tears. Edmund rushed to her side, enveloping her in a warm embrace. "Let it out, Sydney. I'm here for you." As she sobbed, Edmund held her close, his hands stroking her hair. The room grew dim, the only sound was their heavy breathing and Sydney's muffled cries. Finally, she pulled back, her eyes red-rimmed. "I'm so sorry, Edmund. I don't mean to burden you with my problems." Edmund's face was etched with concern. "You're not a burden, Sydney. You're my friend, and I care about you deeply. We'll figure something out, together." As they sat on the couch, Edmund suggested exploring job opportunities and fully funded scholarships to continue her program. Sydney's face lit up with hope, and she threw her arms around him. He had promised to assist her through this phase. That night, as they prepared dinner together, Edmund's presence was a comforting balm to Sydney's frazzled nerves. As they sat on the couch, watching the stars twinkle through the window, Edmund took her hand, his fingers intertwining with hers. In the darkness, their lips met in a tender kiss. Fondling and caressing each other's body parts, the tension between them was palpable. Sydney withdrew, her eyes locked on Edmund's. "What's wrong?" he whispered. Sydney's voice was barely audible. "Nothing. Just... thank you, Edmund. For being here for me." Edmond's smile was soft. "I'll always be here for you, Sydney. Always." The night air was filled with the promise of hope and new beginnings, as they laid close to each together, hands entwined, their hearts beating as one. They found themselves talking almost all night and Sydney's curiosity got the better of her. "Edmund, you've heard so much about me. Tell me about your family. What's your background like?" Edmund hesitated, his eyes dropping to the floor. "It's... complicated." Sydney's eyes widened encouragingly. "Try me." Edmund took a deep breath. "I'm from Perth, Australia. I'm the youngest of four siblings. My parents... they're amazing. My mom is a pediatrician, and my dad is a retired engineer. They're both very kind and supportive." Sydney's eyes sparkled. "That sounds wonderful! What's your family like?" Edmund's face softened. "We're a close-knit family. My parents always encouraged us to pursue our passions. My siblings and I are all very different, but we get along well. My oldest sister is a lawyer, my brother is a musician, and my other sister is a writer." Sydney's eyes widened. "That's amazing! You all sound so accomplished." Edmund chuckled. "We have our moments. But we always support each other." Sydney's eyes sparkled with curiosity. "What's your childhood like?" Edmund's face lit up with a warm smile. "It was amazing. My parents always made sure we had everything we needed. We went on family trips, had game nights, and just enjoyed each other's company." Sydney's eyes shone with admiration. "That sounds incredible. You're so lucky to have such a loving family." Edmund's eyes dropped, his voice barely above a whisper. "I know. I am lucky." “Goodnight” Sydney said. “Night” replied Edmund. He had lied. Something he did not like to do, but he did it still. Edmund's childhood was marked by turmoil. His parents, though well-intentioned, struggled with financial stability. His father's addiction to gambling led to accumulating debt, forcing his mother to work multiple jobs to keep the family afloat. Edmund's siblings and he often went without basic necessities, their lives a constant struggle. One fateful night, a wealthy businessman, Marcus Thompson, intervened, offering to fund Edmund's education in exchange for his father's debt. Edmund's parents, desperate, agreed. Marcus became Edmund's benefactor, paying for his tuition and living expenses, but also exerting control over his life. Edmund's relationship with Marcus is complicated. While Marcus provides for him, he also demands loyalty and secrecy. Edmund's relationship with Marcus is not only financially entangled but also emotionally and sexually charged. Marcus's funding of his education came with implicit expectations of a personal nature. Edmund feels pressured to reciprocate Marcus's "generosity" by indulging in a secret s****l relationship. Edmund is torn between gratitude for the financial support and revulsion at the exploitation he feels. He's trapped in a web of obligation, unable to escape the hold Marcus has over him. This has left emotional scars, making it difficult for Edmund to form genuine connections with others, like Sydney. Edmund's s****l exploitation by Marcus is a painful secret he keeps hidden, ashamed and fearful of being judged or ostracized. This experience has shaped his views on relationships, making it hard for him to trust others or see himself as worthy of genuine love. Edmund feels trapped, unable to escape the debt that binds him to Marcus. He works hard to excel in his studies, hoping to one day break free from this entanglement. Edmund keeps this history hidden, ashamed of his family's struggles and the hold Marcus has over him. He fears Sydney's judgment, worried she'll see him as weak or beholden to someone else's charity. So, he keeps his past obscured, even as it continues to shape his present. The next day, Edmund took Sydney to his friend's supermarket, a bustling store filled with fresh produce and friendly faces. Sydney was introduced to the owner, a warm-smiling man named Alex, who showed her to the sales floor. As the days passed, Sydney worked diligently. "I'll pick you up at 5 pm," Edmund said, as he dropped her off three weeks later. "We'll grab dinner together." Sydney waited till 6 pm then 7 pm. Edmund was never late, it was not in his nature. As she was leaving the supermarket, her eyes scanned the parking lot for Edmund's familiar smile. But he was nowhere to be seen. She tried calling him, but his phone was unreachable. A knot formed in her stomach as she realized she was alone. With a sense of unease, Sydney began her walk home, her eyes darting around the darkening streets. Suddenly, a hand clamped down on her shoulder, and she was yanked into a nearby alley. Sydney's heart raced as she struggled to break free, but her attacker was too strong. The next day, Sydney visited Edmund's house, a cozy bungalow with a welcoming porch. She used the spare keys he had given her and entered, calling out his name. The silence was deafening. Just as she was about to leave, Edmund appeared, his face pale, his eyes sunken. "Hey," he said, his voice strained. Edmund's face contorted in anguish. "Sydney, I'm so sorry. I was with... someone. I didn't mean to leave you vulnerable." Sydney's eyes narrowed. "Someone? Who is it, Edmund?" Edmund's gaze faltered, his eyes avoiding hers. "It's complicated, Sydney. Please, just come in." Edmund hesitated, his eyes darting away. "Just a friend. Come on, let's talk inside." As they entered the house, Sydney noticed Edmund's limp, his movements labored. "What's wrong?" she asked, concern etched on her face. "I'm fine," Edmund insisted, his voice firm but his eyes betraying pain. Sydney's gaze lingered on his, her heart aching with empathy. "You're not fine, Edmund. Tell me the truth.”
