A DEBT MUST BE PAID

1096 Words
Marcus began to circle around him, his eyes gleaming with a sinister intensity. "You see, Edmund, you're not just anyone. You're a pawn in a much larger game. And I'm afraid you're going to have to play by my rules now." Edmund's heart sank as he realised the true extent of his situation. He was trapped, at the mercy of a ruthless adversary. "I don't know what you're talking about," Edmund said, trying to sound confident despite the fear creeping up his spine. Marcus chuckled, a low, menacing sound. "Oh, come now, Edmund. Don't play dumb. You know exactly what I'm talking about. Your father's debt, the one he incurred all those years ago...it's time to pay up." Edmund's mind reeled as he tried to process what Marcus was saying. His father's debt? What did that have to do with him? "I don't know what you're talking about," Edmund repeated, trying to stall for time. Marcus sighed, his expression turning cold. "Fine, play it that way. But know this, Edmund: I always collect what's owed to me. And I'll stop at nothing to get it." With that, Marcus turned and walked away, leaving Edmund shaken and confused. What did Marcus want from him? And how could he escape the web of deceit and danger that seemed to be closing in around him? Marcus walked back into the room, a yellow envelope in his hand. "I think it's time you understood the situation, Edmund," he said, his voice dripping with malice. He handed Edmund the envelope, which felt heavy with foreboding. Edmund took it hesitantly, his heart racing with anticipation. "Open it," Marcus commanded, his eyes glinting with a sinister intensity. Edmund's hands trembled as he ripped open the envelope, revealing a single document inside. The paper was yellowed and worn, but the words leapt off the page like a scream: "IOU - $1,000,000" Beneath the amount, a single name: "Marcus Blackwood" Edmund's heart sank. His father had borrowed a million dollars from Marcus? What could he have possibly needed that much money for? Marcus leaned in, his voice taking on a conspiratorial tone. "Your father was desperate, Edmund. He made a mistake. And now, you're going to have to pay for it." Edmund's eyes snapped up to Marcus, a mix of fear and anger burning within him. "What do you want from me?" he demanded. Marcus smiled, a cold, calculating smile. "Oh, I think you know. You're going to have to work for me, Edmund. Until the debt is paid in full." Edmund's father, a brilliant but reckless entrepreneur, had made a name for himself in the cutthroat world of finance. He had a talent for sniffing out lucrative deals and a charm that could convince even the most sceptical investors to take a chance on him. One fateful night, he found himself at an exclusive, invitation-only poker game hosted by Marcus Blackwood. The stakes were high, and the players were a who's who of wealthy and influential individuals. Edmund's father, fueled by a mix of hubris and desperation, gambled big and lost even bigger. Marcus, sensing an opportunity, offered him a way out: a loan of $1,000,000, to be repaid with interest. Desperate to save face and salvage his crumbling empire, Edmund's father agreed to the terms without reading the fine print. He left the game with the money, but also with a crippling debt that would haunt him for the rest of his life. As the years went by, the interest accrued, and the amount ballooned. Edmund's father tried to pay it off, but Marcus kept moving the goalposts, always finding ways to keep him in his debt. Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed the story so far. I'll keep going! Edmund's mind reeled as he tried to process the events that had led him to this point. He couldn't believe his father had been so reckless, so arrogant. And now, he was paying the price. Edmund knew he had to think clearly. He couldn't let Marcus dictate his every move. He needed a plan, a way to outsmart him and pay off the debt once and for all. But as he looked around the opulent room, he realised that escape wouldn't be easy. Marcus had eyes and ears everywhere. He was a master puppeteer, and Edmund was just a pawn in his game. Determined to take control of his fate, Edmund began to explore his surroundings, searching for any weakness in Marcus's armour. He knew it wouldn't be easy, but he was ready to fight for his freedom. "Your father and I were once business partners, Edmund," Marcus lied, with his voice dripping with sincerity. "We were working on a revolutionary project, one that would have changed the world. But your father...he betrayed me. He stole the idea and ran with it, leaving me with nothing. And then, to add insult to injury, he borrowed $1,000,000 from me to fund his own venture. He promised to pay me back, but he never did." Marcus's eyes narrowed, his expression turning cold. "That's why you're here, Edmund. You're going to help me finish what your father started. You're going to make it right." Edmund's eyes locked onto Marcus, a spark of determination igniting within him. He knew he couldn't trust this man, not after what he'd just revealed a juxtaposition of what his mother had told him before she died, a death Edmund suspected was Marcus’s way of getting his attention. He knew how dangerous Marcus was, so he had to play along. "I understand," Edmund said, his voice firm. "I'll do what it takes to pay off my father's debt." Marcus smiled, a cold, calculating smile. "I knew you'd see it my way, Edmund. Let me remind you that I have been the one funding your tuition since your father’s demise. After your graduate programme, you'll work for me. Surely you’ll find that I'm a...generous employer. But don't think for a moment that you can cross me. I always collect what's owed to me." Edmund nodded, his mind racing with thoughts of escape, of finding a way to outsmart Marcus and break free from this toxic cycle. But for now, he had to bide his time. "Good," Marcus said, his eyes glinting with satisfaction. Marcus walked away leaving Edmund and his hooligans to share the room. One of them smirked at Edmund and with his face signalled him to leave. As he turned to leave, he was met with a chilling sight: Marcus, standing in his office doorway, a smile spreading across his face.
