Chapter 6: Novah vs Cairo

2868 Words
Novah knew the second her honey gold eyes stared into the male teen’s icy blue that she was next, much to her dismay. The stupid guy bumped into her a week ago and has been trying to figure out what she was. Why couldn't people just ask? “At least he’s cute’’ Aoife said, more like purred. Novah inwardly gagged. Although she wasn’t wrong. He was tall, muscular, sharp nose and full lips. She wondered if his brown hair was as soft as it looked. She shook her head as Aoife laughed at her. Unfortunately it was when the teen pointed to her and the coach snapped his finger at her before pointing to the field. “Hale, you know the rules.’’ She really had to work on her covering up her reaction. She sighed before walking over to the center of the field, her eyes looking at nothing but the blue eyes. The stares were hot against her back. God she hated attention. She could feel her skin itch under her sweater as she felt her face redden. She fiddled with the suppressor ring, feeling her magic battle against it. She really hated attention. Rolling up her sleeves to allow the cool air to relieve some of the heat, she stood next to the teen and awaited the coach’s instructions. “Alrighty, you guys know the rules. Winner has to pin their partner, knock them out or make them submit in order to move to the next round. No full shift or it’s immediate disqualification.’’ He clasped both their shoulders before jogging back to the sideline. He took the mike and called out. “Next battle, Novah Hale against future Alpha of the Oakland Pack, Cairo Moran.’’ “Oh, an Alpha?’’ Aoife said, in a saucy tone. Novah ignored her before bowing her head and got into a fighting stance that one of her classmates taught her within the last. Cairo stared at her, a slight smirk on his face. Her cheeks flushed and she suddenly felt ridiculous. It got worse when she heard her mother scream. “THAT’S MY BABY!! BEAT HIS ALPHA ASS!!’’ She wondered if she could quit now and do homeschooling for the rest of the year. ----- Theo marched over to where Megan was standing and grabbed her shoulder, Miles behind him. “What the hell Megan!’’ Megan’s green eyes flared. “What do you mean, dear cousin?’’ “Cut the bullshit. I know you did something so that Novah would go up against Cairo. She’s human! She could be hurt.’’ “Why do you care? You rejected her.” She said stubbornly. Theo could feel his patience coming very close to snapping. “That is none of your business. I told you to leave it and that I would handle it. And Joni was right, you need to get over this thing you have with Novah. I know you hate being one upped but there are going to be loads of people who are going to be better than you.’’ Megan’s cheeks burned as their group looked at them and tried to jerk her shoulder out of his grip but Theo was going to lay it into her. MIles spoke up before he could. “So if she’s human, why does she have the ring on?’’ “Miles not now- What?’’ Theo’s head jerked to look at his mate and blinked. Miles was right. The solid grey ring that blocked half their powers was on Novah’s thumb. The group started murmuring to each other in confusion as they took in Miles' words. Theo’s head jerked up as a Italian woman screamed her support at Novah as any proud parent would. The pale man next to her had a foam finger and was waving it back and forth. Giulia and Artem Hale. Novah Hale. God he felt so stupid but Novah didn’t look anything like the two but then again, genes and adoption where a thing. His head started to hurt as his mind started to race. Who was Novah to them- His head shot back to the field when the crowd gasped in shock. Novah was a few yards away from Cairo, who’s fist was up, on her knees with her hands on her stomach. Cairo then rushed forward to Novah and kicked her. She went flying another few yards. Miles and Megan grabbed him before he could step on the field. He was about to step in and stop the match when he heard his mother. “Come on Novah, you can do it!’’ Novah had looked up at his mother before looking back at Cairo with a determined look. To say Theo was shocked and confused at what happened next was an understatement. --- Novah couldn’t stop Cairo from grabbing her shirt nor him tossing her to the other side of the field. Her back hit the tree and she winced. “How cruel! Humans do not deserve this kind of treatment. It’s a good thing you aren’t one otherwise you might be seriously injured.’’ Aoife growled. Novah nodded in agreement as she felt the aching muscles heal. The redhead could feel Aoife vibrate as she cooed at her human, making Novah feel laxed as she let the fox siren like call fill her.“Use my powers and make him pay. No more hiding and no more taking beatings by stupid werewolves!’’ As much as didn’t like using Aoife’s powers, she hated losing even more, especially if it was in front of her parents. And the pack's Luna? This sucked major as- She could feel Aoife rolled her eyes before shouting in alarm. She looked up just in time to see a fist coming her way but luckily Aoife wasn’t about to let it connect with her face. The fox took control of Novah’s arm and caught the fist, much to the shock of the thrower. Novah looked up into Cairo’s eyes and smirked before pushing the fist away. Cairo stumbled back and looked at Novah in confusion and awe before it disappeared and he raced towards her. Novah was prepared for it as she raced forward too and ducked at the oncoming punch. She practically body slammed into Cairo’s middle before pushing him straight back to the middle of the field before pushing him off her. The blue eyed Alpha fell onto his back. She could hear the crowd shocked gasping and couldn’t help but smirk. ‘That’s right assholes’ she thought. She lifted her hand up and felt it shift into a claw. Her fingers looked like they were covered in black soot as her nails grew sharp. She could hear the crowd getting louder. Flexing it, looked into Cairo’s eyes as he stood up slowly, his eyes calculating as he started shifting as well. ‘’At least he’s taking you seriously rather than throwing you around like a ragdoll.’’ Aoife said as Novah raced forward, her claw curled as she swiped at Cairo. The Alpha dodged with ease, spinning around with his elbow up. Novah ducked and aimed for his ribs with her claw and for the next couple minutes it was basically a game of throwing and dodging. They twirled around faster, dodging each other's hits, the punches and kicks becoming more forceful. She was quite thankful her parents were one of the top fighters in the pack and trained her to defend herself. It also helped that Ila taught her as well. Of course, her mind started to drift once her concentration was broken and she looked into the shocked green eyes of Theo and for some reason the thought excited her. She gave a toothy smile Unfortunately, that one second of distraction cost her as she was kicked in the stomach. The force of the kick almost drove her into the ground but she dug her hand into the grass to stop her from going any further. Before she could get up, Cairo was on her and lifted her into a choke hold. She dug her nails into his arm but Cairo didn’t budge. A deep smooth voice filled her ears “You know, I had a feeling you weren’t fully human when I had bumped into you last week. I definitely knew right now because you were way too calm for someone who supposedly was powerless against nonhumans. That or you were stupid thinking you wouldn’t get chosen. Though I’m kinda glad that Carly chick told me to pick you. Theo’s strong and all but he doesn’t really put up a fight, not how I like it.’’ His grip tightened and Novah could feel herself freaking out. She hated being confined. She could feel herself heating up as the air became scarce. “Then win this battle already! You have the upper hand.’’ She choked out. She started jerking as she tried to feel for Aoife but couldn’t feel her. The heat was becoming unbearable. “Nah, I think you’re holding back and I’m not about to end it until you go all out.’’ Had she been in the right headspace, she would have rolled her eyes. Alphas and their stupid arrogance. She closed her eyes and relaxed. Aoife spoke up. “I hope you’re not giving up just yet. Let me give you a hand and show this loser who’s boss.’’ Novah was going to ask where she had gone to when the heat was released from inside her, causing Cairo to release her as he hissed in pain. She opened her eyes and felt the air around her feel scalding hot but she didn’t feel uncomfortable. Cairo glared at her before his eyes widened. She smirked before letting out a low growl. ----- Theo almost broke out of his friend's grip when Novah’s eyes closed. He heard some of the adults cry out in concern and the coach was even about to disband the fight when the air got a little warmer and Cairo hissed in pain. Theo looked to Novah and froze. Novah was covered in a red aura, like steam but it was shining with thick gold and orange strands here and there. Her hair looked like it was flowing, like on a windy say and it looked wilder than before. Her honey gold eyes were now like liquid gold and pupiless. He swore they looked like a pond with ripples. She gave a smirk before letting out a growl. He could feel Jahsen growling, fighting against him as Theo held on to control. The growl was inhuman, even by Were creature standards. It filled the air and he felt the earth rumble around them. The birds cried out as they fled the trees around them. He looked around to the other shifters and saw them struggling for control, a few of them even whined as they stuck out their necks in submission, eyes flashing gold and silver. This was no ordinary growl. This was a challenge to an Alpha. He could hear his dad barking orders before there was a sound of shredding clothes. He looked to see that Cairo had shifted into a huge Brown wolf with a white patch of fur in the middle of his head. On all fours he stood about seven feet. He looked to Novah to warn her when he froze. Novah was gone and in her place was a fox. Not a normal small one. No, Novah’s form was about four and a half feet standing and had beautiful orange red glossy fur, black fur around her paws and 3 bushy tails that coiled together like snakes and white and royal blue markings on her face His mind started racing again. Was his mate a fox shifter? No, shifters didn’t have this kind of power. No, his mate was something entirely different. And it was terrifying. Before his dad could order them to stop, Cairo leaped to Novah and tried to tackle her but she dipped quickly and snapped at his leg. He managed to pull away before they were at each other's throats before, pushing each other so that the fight was taken to the forest. He moved to follow when his dad stopped him. “Theodore, I’ll take it from here. Please stay with the pack and make sure nothing happens.’’ Charles said before shifting into his full form and raced into the woods with the current Beta and Alpha from the Oakland pack. Novah’s mother, he wasn’t fully sure, raced after them. Everyone was going crazy at the reveal and he felt tired all of a sudden. Miles gave a weak smile. “Well at least she’s not an easy target like you thought.’’ Theo felt his patience snapped. ---- “Tear him apart! Make him submit’’ Aoife hissed, a bit crazily. There were many factors as to why Novah hated using Aoife’s powers. Firstly it made her tired after using it and secondly, Aoife tended to get a little blood lusty. Before she could tell her to concentrate, Cairo bit her tail and clung to it. Novah howled in pain before rolling on to her back and scratched his face with her paw. He let go with a growl and snapped his jaw to her hind leg. She hopped before backing up. They circled each other and calculated each other. ‘Ugh, I hate fighting.’ Novah moaned as she rolled away from a pair of snapping jaws. Aoife was quiet as she took in the fight. Novah crouched low and waited for Cairo’s next move. He set back on his hind legs and raced forward, lifting into the air to tackle her. “THERE!! His throat’s open.’’ Aoife shouted suddenly and Novah shot straight up and sank her teeth into Cairo’s throat and held tight but not enough to cause too much damage. Cairo yelped in pain when he realized that the fox teeth could rip his throat if he tried anything. He slowly sanked to the ground and relaxed in submission. Novah let him go and looked at him. Cairo had his head on his paws as his wolf whined in submission. She c****d her head and sat down, watching as the wound slowly sealed shut. She closed her eyes and felt the cool air and shivered. She opened her eyes and the wolf was way bigger. She was back in her human form. Covering her chest, she gave a soft smile. “Sorry about that, Aoife tends to get competitive when I shift.’’ “It’s a good thing he isn’t Alpha of his pack yet otherwise there would have been some serious trouble.’’ someone said. She turned and she saw the Alpha, Charles tugging on his shorts. She could hear a few others shift and saw her mother come crashing through the trees, tackling her into a hug. “Mio amore, what were you thinking? Challenging an Alpha like that.’’ Her mother said, pulling away and slapped her on the head before pulling her into another hug. She heard a gruff and looked at a burly man lifting Cairo up and shoving a pair of shorts into his chest. “Damn it Charles, you Bastard. A Fox Demon? That’s pretty amazing.’’ The man said before looking at Novah with a bit of reverence. “I met a couple demons back in my day. Good people despite the reputation. And you, what were you thinking going against a demon. Did the three tails not tip you off?’’ Cairo rolled his eyes and he gave a weak half smile, rasping out. “Hey at least I held my own.’’ The man shook his head but he had pride in his voice as he agreed. Feeling bad at the damage she did, she stood up and walked over to Cairo, ignoring the curious stares. Once she was in front of him, instead of placing her hand to heal the bite mark, she felt mischievous and stood on her toes, pressing her lips against his neck. She opened her mouth and gave a long lick and watched as steam rose from the wound as it sealed up. She gave him a smirk before walking back to her mother, ignoring the stuttering from the other teen. She turned back and gave a wink. "Does this mean I'm disqualified? Because I'm really hungry." That broke the silence as the adults laughed at her statement. Charles had nodded to his Beta then to Cairo and his dad before turning to head back to the stadium. The Oakland Alpha pulled at Cairo before the teen stopped. Cairo looked to Novah before his eyes shifting to the ground as he stumbled on his words. “Thank you for- you know, healing my wounds. I really- er rather I-! Look, I enjoyed our fight and hope we can do it again.’’ He turned and walked back to the school. Had Novah looked closely, she would have seen the blush on the future Alpha’s face. “Scandalous.’’ Aoife gasped. Novah smiles before shivering. She curled into herself when she realized she was naked. She turns to her mother, who was shaking her head in exasperation. “Sooo, any chance I could get some clothes?’’
