Chapter 5: Tournament Begins

2109 Words
The transition from the Oakland pack to their pack was…intense to say the least. Not only was the change in ranks hard to figure out (Two Alphas, two packs, two of everything) it's still taking some time to get used to. Theo knew he was going to buttheads with Cairo, Oakland's arrogant, stubborn, soon to be alpha. Theo couldn't stand him. He made it a point to avoid him as much as possible, even if he knew he'd be lectured for it. Luckily, they didn't have to be around each other outside meetings. He was also glad the merge had gone smoothly, or as smoothly as this situation could go. For the next week and a half, as everyone got used to the idea of being cramped together and new scents filling the air, everyone across the two packs talked non stop about the tournament. Many debated who would be the champion to move on but it was pretty obvious that everyone from Grey Dusk wanted Theo to win. He was to be their next Alpha after all. But due to his status, as all other Alphas in training, he was exempt from moving further than the first match and the title would go to whoever landed in second place. Even though he wouldn’t be able to go represent his pack, he was pretty excited to see how far his pack would go in the tournament. Although, he could go without the constant bickering between his Beta and cousin “Don’t worry Megan, I’ll make sure to send you flowers to your grave when I drag you through the mud in the tournament.’’ Miles said, haughtily. Megan grinned as she cracked her knuckles. “That’s if you can make it past the first round. In fact, I bet you’ll lose to to a Fae!’’ Joni spoke up, not even looking up from the book in her hand. “Hey, don’t count the Fae out, Marco and Marla are pretty strong.’’ Theo smiled slightly at her before nodding in agreement. “It’s true, Marla had Ron pinned the other day during practice.’’ Miles gauffed. “Ron? Got pinned by a one hundred and ten when wet girl? Pictures or it didn’t happen.’’ Theo smacked the back of his head and the blonde grinned. Theo went to go take a bit of his pizza when the scent of pine filled his nose. He looked up to see Novah halfway out the door, only to be stopped by Cairo. Sudden rage fills him as her eyes furrowed in confusion and something akin to titillate as the other future Alpha practically hovers over her. The brunette male leaned over and Theo had to physically stop himself from jumping over the table and throw a punch to Cairo when the redhead girl leaned away in slight discomfort. Novah glared, said something before leaving the cafeteria. Whatever she said left the future brunette Alpha in shock before he smiled and walked the opposite way. Miles snapped his fingers in front of Theo’s face, gaining his attention. “So did you ever figure that out? Like I get not liking someone and not wanting to be with them but your scent is going crazy dude.’’ Theo frowned. He’s been noticing the red headed girl more and she started occupying his thoughts whenever it wasn’t on school or Alpha training and even then she still managed to seep through. He could practically hear Megan’s anger before she even said anything. “He doesn’t have to do anything. He rejected her and once she’s out of the pack, so will his confusion.’’ Miles scoffed in an offended tone at the noirettes words but surprisingly Joni spoke up, clear irritation in her voice. “What he’s feeling is natural, Megan, and it won’t ever, ever go away. He rejected someone the Moon Goddess gave him and him feeling like he's having second feelings is the backlash. You think I was able to keep my feelings straight when I rejected Miles? He can do what he pleases with his feelings because that is his mate. I get that you don’t like her but seriously? Get over it because if he chooses to be with her, then she will be Luna and continue to be apart of this pack.’’ Theo couldn’t help but feel pride at Joni. She treated everyone and considered everyone pack. She would have made a good Luna. He stood up straighter. “She’s right and I’m sorry I’ve been out of whack. I’ll speak to her after the tournament. As future Alpha, I shouldn’t exclude anyone for no reason, especially my own mate. Even if she is human.’’ Joni gave a triumph smirk in Megan’s direction before looking back to her book. The bell rang before being cut off by the intercom. The principal’s voice cheerfully shrilled through. ‘Goooood Afternooooon Students!! Today is the day the Fighting Tournament begins! All seniors make way to the gym for preparation. All other students will have sixth period free. If you…’’ Chatter throughout the cafeteria overtook the announcement as students started exiting the cafeteria. Miles stood up before punching the air. He hollered in response to some of the other seniors as they started chanting in excitement. Theo smiled before grabbing his bag and headed to the gym with Megan. Joni gave Miles a kiss in good luck and left for her last class of the day, since she was a Junior. They had all gotten dressed in their workout clothes, which most were happy they didn’t have to wear their gym uniforms. Once all the seniors arrived at the football field, they filled a couple of the bleachers and waited for the coach. Theo looked over to the other pack and saw Megan talking with the head cheerleader, Carly. He assumed it was about fashion as they pointed at each other’s clothes. Megan had put her hands through her pockets and Carly smiled like crazy and pointed at her own yoga pants before shaking her head. Megan pulled out her phone and Theo looked on. He saw Andi chatting with her mate before waving over to someone. He should have known it was Novah. She had on a dark blue crew neck sweater with grey shorts that stopped mid-thigh, knee high socks with plain white tennis shoes. Her normally wild hair was pulled back into a low ponytail. She looked...cute. Theo looked away with a small blush. The group of students looked up as the Coach walked in front of them with the nurse and principal. “Alright students, Today is the big day to show the Oakland pack who’s boss! I’m going to go over some of the rules. First, all shifters can only go partial shifts. Full shift will result in an immediate disqualification. Same for Faes. Druid, witches, and nymphs will be given a special ring that will only allow them to use half their powers to even out the fields. The nurse will be conducting a test to make sure the rings will measure the right amount. In order to win your battle, your opponent must be restrained, knocked out or have them withdraw.’’ The group of teens muttered to each other and the principal cleared her throat. “Please try not to pummel each other to the death, I really don’t need a bunch of parents coming after me.’’ She said seriously before giving a small smile. “But importantly make sure to have fun and show our school spirit and strength and win this match!’’ The class cheered. --- The sky was still bright blue as the tournament started. The stands were filled to the brim with families and friends, all different types of being from mermaids to vampires to selkies. Theo could see his parents in the middle of the stands, chatting with parents around them. Looking over to the otherside he could see the senior class of the Oakland pack stretching. Miles nudged him and pointed to Carly, who was walking back from the opposing team’s side. He gave her an inquiring look and she looked at him, a nervous look on her face before it disappeared as she winked at him. “I’m friends with some of the girls on the other cheer squad. Just wanted to say hi!’’ she said a little too quickly before rushing back to Cairo. Miles looked just as confused before Theo leaned in. “Watch out for anything suspicious. If anything happens, get Carly.’’ He didn’t want to start stuff, in case she really was telling the truth. He couldn’t help but feel that something was going to happen. The stands slowly went silent as the Coach took the mic and called for attention. The Oakland high’s Coach stood next to him. “Now the event you have all been waiting for. Let the Tournament begin! As guest to our lovely pack, Oakland will get first pick.’’ The coaches shook hands, matching grins as decades long rivalry between the two friends still thriving as the day it was formed. The Oakland pack huddled before a tall brunette male with emerged from the group with an eager grin. He jogged to the middle of the field and stared at his pack, sizing each and every one of his classmates. His eyes stared at a person and he pointed. Theo stomach dropped a second and looked at the said target before relaxing as Miles puffed up and walked to the center, a massive smirk on his face. Coach met them and spoke a few words before walking backwards, mic in hand. “Future Beta of Grey Dusk Pack, Miles Redfield vs Future Gamma of the Oakland Pack, Julius Simms.’’ Both sides of the stands roar in encouragement for the first battle. The two stared at each other and once the coach shouted for them to start, Both took off and slammed right into each other. Hands connected as they tried to fight for dominance, eyes turning gold. The two wolves pushed away from each other, Julius hopping to one foot as he launched himself forward with his fist in front of him. Miles ducked left as the fist narrowly dodging the blow before twisting the other way as a kick came at him to his right. Julius was skilled in hand to hand combat but Miles was able to pick up Gamma's pattern and found that he favored his left. Once he figured out the pattern, Miles seemed to be waiting for the right moment and it came when Julius tried to land an uppercut. Miles looped his arm through Julius’s and flipped him over onto his back. The second the Gamma’s back hit the ground, Miles was on him, pinning him in a chokehold. While Julius was more skilled in hand to hand, Miles had the upperhand in strength. A few seconds later, the Gamma tapped out and Miles won the match. Theo cheered loudly with the rest of his pack as the blonde jumped up and lifted the Gamma up and patted his shoulder before joining Theo’s side. The black haired teen clapped the back of his best friends back and grinned. The next few matches were pretty entertaining in Theo’s opinion. Andi ended up going against a vampire and won by a slim chance when she stuck her claw into the vampire’s neck, effectively causing him to lose motor control. If a vampire bit or scratched a were or vice versa, the special venom causes the person to lose control of their coordination for a bit. Megan had her battle against a shewolf and won without a hitch. Maiah went against a fae and it ended in a tie where both were knocked out. A few members from the other pack won a few matches as well. Theo was getting antsy as more matches went on. He had his eye on their future Alpha, wanting to test out his abilities. And maybe throw a few punches for messing with his mat- Novah. He had been so in his thoughts that he almost missed the coach calling for the next match. He saw the future Alpha, Cairo, walk towards the center field. His blue eyes stared straight ahead boredly before looking at someone in Theo’s group. Turning to look where he was looking he could see Megan and Carly give him a nod. His stomach dropped a bit when Cairo looked and pointed in his direction, but not at him. Miles choked a bit and he could hear the crowd quieting. Theo knew who was chosen. He was going to kill Megan.
