3.22 The choir were midway through the sweet lullaby, ‘Inannay’, when they entered the hall. After Heather’s sumptuous breakfast they’d spent the morning attending to the laundry and household chores and compiling a list of baby things, which Heather pinned to the fridge. Now Fran, Sue, Beth and Karen were standing at the back of the altos. Yvette stood beside Fran, catching her eye with a light smile. Fran smiled back. Without hesitation Yvette joined in the chorus, her voice blending with the others, carried along by that swell of voices, rising and falling, the different pitches of the three-part harmony merging and surging forth in sublime dovetail. The song finished and Fran turned and folded Yvette in her arms. ‘How are you?’ she whispered in Yvette’s ear. Yvette hugged her back
