Chapter 6 — The Path Beneath His Eyes

796 Words
Nobody stopped him immediately. Mostly because nobody understood what the hell they were looking at. Logan walked calmly through the alley like he knew exactly where he was going. Eyes open. Expression distant. Not awake. But not unconscious either. Grayson looked at Mira. “Tell me this is some weird medical thing.” “It’s not a medical thing.” “That answer deeply upsets me.” Selene moved first. She stepped carefully beside Logan. “Logan?” No response. Not even a glance. He kept walking. Steady pace. Like he could see a road none of them could. Mira watched him carefully. “He’s responding to something.” Grayson frowned. “The map?” “The path,” Selene said quietly. That made both of them look at her. She immediately realized she’d said too much. Grayson pointed instantly. “Aha. You know something.” Selene exhaled softly. “Not much.” “That’s becoming your favorite lie.” But Selene ignored him. Her eyes stayed fixed on Logan. Concern was starting to replace control now. And Logan noticed none of it. Because Logan wasn’t really there anymore. The streets narrowed the deeper he walked. The market noise faded behind them slowly. Old buildings replaced crowded stalls. Less people. Less light. More silence. Logan suddenly stopped near a rusted metal door built into the side of an old stone structure. Grayson looked around uneasily. “Fantastic. Murder building.” Logan raised one hand slowly toward the door. Then froze. His expression changed slightly. Like he was listening. Mira stepped closer carefully. “Logan?” Then he spoke. Still calm. Still distant. “The first door opens downward.” Grayson stared. “Cool sentence. Hate it completely.” Selene moved toward the door slowly. “There’s no handle,” she said. Logan touched the center of the metal lightly. A low sound echoed beneath them. Everyone froze. Then— the door unlocked itself. Grayson took two full steps backward immediately. “Nope.” Mira looked genuinely shocked now. Selene too. Because none of them had touched anything except Logan. The metal door slowly creaked open. Dark stairs descended beneath the city. Cold air rising upward from below. Ancient air. Logan stepped forward immediately. Selene grabbed his arm. “Wait.” For the first time— he reacted. Not fully. But enough. His head turned slightly toward her. Eyes still distant. And quietly he said: “The path closes if we hesitate.” Grayson blinked slowly. “Okay I officially hate sleeping Logan.” Mira looked down the stairs carefully. “This place shouldn’t exist beneath the market.” Grayson looked at her. “That sentence has become disturbingly common around us.” Selene let go of Logan slowly. And Logan continued downward. Without fear. Without hesitation. Like he’d already been there before. The staircase seemed deeper than possible. Stone walls. Ancient carvings. Dust untouched for years. Their footsteps echoed strangely. Too long. Like the space below them was enormous. Grayson shined a flashlight ahead. “If a mummy jumps out, I’m leaving every single one of you.” “No you won’t,” Mira replied calmly. “That’s true. Unfortunately I’ve grown attached.” Selene glanced briefly toward Logan again. Still walking. Still asleep. Still somehow avoiding every broken section of stone perfectly. “How is he doing that?” Mira asked quietly. Selene answered before thinking. “The bloodline remembers.” Silence. Grayson immediately pointed at her. “There it is again.” Selene closed her eyes briefly. “Forget I said that.” “No, absolutely not.” Logan suddenly stopped again. This time near a massive circular stone door covered in symbols. The air here felt wrong. Heavy. Like pressure building behind walls. Logan raised his hand slowly toward one of the symbols. Then paused. His expression tightened slightly for the first time. Mira noticed immediately. “Something changed.” Grayson looked around nervously. “Please say something comforting.” Nobody did. Logan spoke softly. “There are four.” Selene frowned. “Four what?” His voice lowered. “The watchers.” The temperature dropped instantly. Not naturally. Violently. Grayson stepped back slightly. “Okay. f**k this.” Then— a sound echoed behind them. Footsteps. Not theirs. Everyone turned immediately. Darkness filled the upper staircase. But something was moving inside it. Several somethings. Slow. Controlled. Watching. Selene’s face lost color slightly. “No…” Mira looked at her. “What is it?” Selene whispered only two words. “The Order.” Then lights appeared in the darkness above them. Flashlights. Several. And a calm voice echoed downward: “You activated it faster than expected, Mr. Stern.” Logan finally opened his eyes fully. And this time— he was awake.
