Chapter 4

Unknown P.O.V.                        “Princess, I must get the Princess home safely, I can’t believe I found her!!” I thought as I swam with all my might. It’s been over 10 years since the Princess was lost to our realm, she was lost during that last great scrimmage between our species. My clan sided with Alpha Xander of the Moonshadow pack, as Alpha it was ultimately my decision where best to place our allies, I grew up with Alpha Xander in this very forest hundreds of years ago. Back then was a more peaceful time, albeit laden with sorrows from the recent wars with the humans. I remember the time when shifters lived in secrecy, keeping our identities hidden from the human race, at least most of the human race. There were always a few exceptions, witches knew our kinds existed, they’re connection to the earth and spirits allows them to see the truth easier than most. Then there are the humans whom feel in love with one of our kind that lived amongst the humans. Sometimes it worked out, they lived together but they were never able to have kids, our bodies weren’t compatible, but we never told them that. It was too dangerous to try, those who did manage to conceive only ended in the death of the mother if she was human or the infant if the father was human. It seemed that human DNA was violently incompatible to ours.            Still, love transcends lifetimes, soulmates, twin flames, yin and yang, all different ways to say the same thing, the goddess given other half of your soul in another body. The person who completes you, cherishes you above all else, the bond once formed is the most powerful force in the universe. When the soul is whole, there is very little that can stand in its way. Sometimes the two souls were found in different species and we understood that, we didn’t punish the humans for not being able to understand. We knew we’d see our mate in another lifetime, human lives are relatively short compared to ours, so we just enjoyed the time we had when we did find them.            A common theme across many wars would be love, whether it’s scorned love, unrequited love, forbidden love, or to gain love, love of one’s country or love of one’s idea generally speaking love or the polar opposite hate drives most wars. This was no different, another story of a couple whom felt they were star-crossed lovers. Xavier was the Royal Lycan Prince, and even though he had trained all his life to take over the kingdom he was nervous. A few hundred years old is still a pup in most elder’s eyes and he didn’t want to disappoint them. During the day while the pack would be sleeping and only the omegas would be up cleaning the pack house, he would sneak out to the local village and just watch the human community go about their business, oblivious to the world that surrounds them. Most of their fairy tales stem from interactions with that same world they so choose to ignore. Over time he would explore the edges of their villages, learning about each family. He learned just like in our world there were good humans and bad humans, though it seemed bad humans were out pacing the good ones quickly. There was one family however that stood out to him, on the outskirts of the city in a small straw hut shone a single light. A small cry in the morning and a new sound fills the air, curious Xavier sneaks over to the window and quietly peaks through the window, he realizes the light is coming from this human child, but before he even has time to contemplate this fact his wolf Lukeen chants in his head MATE! MATE! MATE! Xavier already knew he wasn’t ready to take the throne, but once he found his mate, he knew he was going to spend how ever long he could with her before taking the throne. He initially watched her grow up from the side lines, always in the shadows. As she went from a tiny toddler to a small child he would appear to her in the woods, that’s when he found out her name, Ariadne, and when she would tell her parents about him he was her imaginary friend, which was completely normal for children that age. Age she grew up their friendship quickly turned into love and Xavier proposed. She accepted on one condition; he would need to ask her father for permission. Xavier never one to back down from a challenge, accepted the condition, they agreed to ask her father when he returned from his business trip overseas, only her father didn’t return from overseas that month. He sent her an email saying he was going on a business retreat to secure new contracts and he would be home by the end of the year.            Xavier and Ariadne started their life together, eagerly waiting for her father to return so that they could make it official. With only two months left until her father returns, life seems to be going great. Xavier got a job amongst the humans to provide for him and Ariadne, though he didn’t have to he could easily access his pack’s money but having money with no job would draw suspicion so he worked and Aria worked from home. One day he returned home from work and found Aria sitting on the couch staring at the wall. Lukeen went on the defensive immediately, wanting to know what caused this reaction to our loving sweet mate. Then he went silent, and began, no? Was he purring, like a kitten? “What is it, what happened?’ I asked, when I got no reply I was more confused than ever. I approach Aria slowly and lower myself beside her on the couch, several heart beats pass and for the first time in my life I hear her thoughts inside my head “I’m late”
