The Final Countdown

The room erupted into motion. Alarms screamed. Phones rang. Security personnel rushed between stations. The command center transformed into chaos. Yet amidst the panic, Adrian became completely calm. Dangerously calm. Sophia had learned what that meant. Whenever Adrian became this quiet, this focused, something was about to happen. Something decisive. Marcus pointed toward a digital map displayed on the main screen. "The explosives are spread throughout the estate." Adrian studied the layout. His eyes moved quickly. Analyzing. Calculating. Searching. "How much time?" Marcus looked grim. "Forty-seven minutes." Sophia felt her stomach tighten. Forty-seven minutes. To rescue Adrian's grandmother. Recover the final archive. Stop Edward Holloway. And escape alive. It sounded impossible. Adrian looked up. "We move now." Nobody argued. Because there was no alternative. --- Fifteen minutes later, three black vehicles raced through the coastal roads leading toward Holloway's estate. The Mediterranean moon illuminated the sea beside them. Beautiful. Silent. Deadly. Sophia sat beside Adrian. Neither spoke. Neither needed to. Both understood the stakes. This wasn't simply another mission. This was the end. One way or another. The war would end tonight. Adrian reached across the seat and took her hand. The gesture surprised her. Not because he did it. Because he did it in front of everyone. Without hesitation. Without concern. As though he no longer cared who knew. Marcus noticed. He smiled quietly. Then looked away. Giving them privacy. Sophia squeezed Adrian's hand. His grip tightened in return. For the first time in years, Adrian felt afraid. Not of death. Not of failure. Not even of Edward Holloway. He was afraid of losing her. And that realization changed everything. --- The estate appeared ahead. Massive. Illuminated. Silent. Almost peaceful. A perfect illusion. Marcus checked his watch. Thirty-two minutes remaining. "Security?" One of the team members answered. "Heavy." Adrian nodded. Expected. Edward Holloway wasn't planning to survive. Which meant he had no reason to hold back. That made him infinitely more dangerous. The vehicles stopped. The assault began. --- Gunfire shattered the night. Security teams clashed near the entrance. Bullets flew. Glass exploded. Alarms echoed throughout the property. Adrian led the way. Moving quickly. Relentlessly. Every second mattered. Every delay could cost lives. Sophia stayed beside him. Refusing to remain behind. Refusing to be protected. The old Sophia might have hidden. This Sophia fought. The difference amazed even Adrian. Together they pushed through the estate. Room by room. Hallway by hallway. Searching. Advancing. Closing in. Then Marcus shouted. "The bunker entrance." A concealed elevator hidden beneath the main villa. Exactly where Richard Blackwood's journal predicted. Exactly where Edward Holloway would be waiting. --- Twenty-four minutes. The countdown continued. The elevator descended slowly. Too slowly. Sophia could hear her own heartbeat. Adrian stood beside her. Weapon ready. Eyes focused. The elevator finally stopped. The doors opened. A massive underground facility stretched before them. Servers. Security systems. Archives. Records. Decades of secrets. The true heart of the Foundation. And standing in the center of it all... Edward Holloway. Waiting. Alone. The elderly senator smiled. Almost warmly. "I've been expecting you." Adrian stepped forward. "Where is my grandmother?" Edward pointed toward a nearby room. Behind reinforced glass. The elderly woman sat calmly inside. Alive. Unharmed. Relieved tears immediately filled Adrian's eyes. His grandmother smiled when she saw him. Even now. Even here. She smiled. Edward noticed. "A touching family reunion." His voice dripped with sarcasm. Sophia looked around. Something felt wrong. Very wrong. Then she noticed the countdown timer. Mounted on the wall. Twenty-two minutes. The explosives. The island. Everything. Real. Very real. "You really intend to do it." Edward looked at her. Then laughed. "Amazing." "What?" "You're still surprised." His expression darkened. "The world already belongs to monsters." The senator slowly walked through the bunker. "The difference is that I stopped pretending otherwise." Adrian's voice became ice. "You murdered innocent people." Edward shrugged. "I built governments." "You destroyed families." "I built nations." The casual arrogance disgusted everyone. Yet Edward seemed completely convinced of his righteousness. That made him even more dangerous. --- Then something unexpected happened. The senator looked directly at Adrian. Not with hatred. Not with anger. Almost with respect. "Your father was impressive." Silence. Adrian froze. Edward continued. "He came closer than anyone." The words felt like poison. "You killed him." For the first time, Edward looked genuinely annoyed. "No." The answer stunned everyone. "What?" The senator sighed. As though discussing an old inconvenience. "Richard Blackwood wasn't supposed to die." The room became silent. Completely silent. Adrian's pulse accelerated. "What are you talking about?" Edward looked toward the servers. Toward the archives. Toward the empire he built. Then answered. "Victor Kane killed him." The confession hit like lightning. Sophia gasped. Marcus stared. Adrian froze. Victor. Not Edward. Victor had murdered Richard Blackwood. The revelation shattered the final illusion. Edward had ordered destruction. Ordered imprisonment. Ordered cover-ups. But Richard's actual murder belonged to Victor Kane. A terrified man trying to save himself. The truth felt almost unbelievable. Yet Edward's expression carried no deception. No reason to lie. Not anymore. Not at the end. --- Suddenly the bunker doors exploded open. Everyone turned. A figure stumbled inside. Bloodied. Desperate. Terrified. Victor Kane. The man looked nothing like the powerful businessman from before. His expensive suit was torn. His face bruised. His eyes filled with panic. "They found me." Edward smiled. Coldly. "Of course they did." Victor looked around wildly. Then saw Adrian. Saw Sophia. Saw the timer. And finally understood. "No." Edward nodded. "Yes." Victor backed away. "You said we'd escape." "I lied." The realization destroyed him. After decades of loyalty. After decades of crime. Edward Holloway planned to kill him too. Victor's hands trembled. Then something snapped. Years of fear. Years of guilt. Years of selfishness. All exploded at once. Victor pointed toward Edward. And shouted the words Adrian had waited his entire life to hear. "I killed Richard Blackwood!" The confession echoed through the bunker. Nobody moved. Nobody spoke. Victor collapsed to his knees. Tears filled his eyes. "I killed him." His voice cracked. "He wouldn't stop." Another sob. "He kept gathering evidence." Adrian stood frozen. The truth. Finally. Completely. Painfully. The truth. --- Eighteen minutes. The countdown continued. Edward glanced at the timer. Then toward the sea of servers surrounding them. His empire. His legacy. His kingdom. Soon it would all be gone. A strange smile crossed his face. Peaceful. Almost relieved. Then he reached into his jacket. And pulled out a detonator. Sophia's heart stopped. Adrian raised his weapon. Everyone froze. One movement. One mistake. One second. That was all it would take. Edward smiled. "You know what's funny?" Nobody answered. The senator looked at Adrian. Then Sophia. Then his grandmother. And finally the detonator. "I really thought I'd win." His thumb moved toward the button. And the fate of everyone in the bunker hung on the next heartbeat.
