CHAPTER 4- I want her gone

778 Words
*Jack’s POV* I met my father at the dining room eating and not even caring at all if his daughter was dead or alive. He’s got steak on his plate. Blood rare. Coffee black. Newspaper open to the business section. Same as every morning since Mom died. Like Hope doesn’t exist. Like the baby upstairs crying her lungs out doesn’t exist. Like the woman he buried 3 weeks ago doesn’t exist. I stand in the doorway until he feels me. He doesn’t look up. Just turns a page. “You’re late for school,” he says. “I’m not going.” My voice is flat. Dead. Now he looks up. One eyebrow raised. “Excuse me?” “I said I’m not going to school.” I walk in. Each step echoes. He sets his coffee down. Slow. Careful. Like I’m a bomb he doesn’t want to set off. "Are you seriously telling me you don't want to go to school because of a child that killed my wife, and your mom?" "What are you talking about dad?". I asked “I mean the baby that killed my wife" The word daughter tastes like poison. She’s not my daughter. daughters don’t take your mom’s last breath. daughters don’t ruin families before they can even open their eyes. I just stood there and asked“So what do you want, dad?” “I want her gone.” My father slam his hand on the table. His coffee spills. “Orphanage. Foster care. Dump her on the street for all I care. I don’t want to hear her cry anymore. I don’t want to see My wife's face every time I look at her.” Silence. Mrs. Lucy freezes in the doorway with a tray. Her eyes are wide. Hurt. Like something pricked_her_. I gave the baby to Mrs lucy since she was just playing while I was carrying her and asked. “You think I haven’t thought about it?” “Every night, I keep on hearing cries and it's like I'm seeing your mother's face everywhere as far as she can't bring back my dead wife there's nothing I can do about it,” he says, panting. Mrs. Lucy gasps. “Then why haven’t you?” I demand. “Why are you still letting her stay here?” He stands. Walks to the window. Looks out at the garden Mom planted. The one that’s dying now because no one waters it. “Because she has your mother’s eyes,” he says. “And as much as I hate her… I can’t kill the last piece of your mother I have left.” Kill. He said kill. Like he’s thought about it. Like part of him wants to. “Then I’ll take care of her,” I say before I can stop myself. “I’ll ___ The slap comes fast. Harder than any he’s ever given me. My head rings. My lip splits. “Don’t you ever say that again,” he snarls, gripping my collar. “You hear me? You don’t touch her. You ignore her. You pretend she doesn’t exist. You’re a Sterling, and we stay strong.” A Sterling. Right. Sterlings ignore their problems until they disappear. Sterlings let babies cry alone in nurseries. Sterlings hate their own blood. “Fine,” I spit, shoving him off. “I’ll ignore her. Like you do. I’ll walk past her room. I’ll let Mrs. Lucy deal with _it_. I’ll go to school and pretend I don’t have a sister.” I grab my bag. “But if she dies from neglect? If she gets sick and no one calls a doctor?” I look him dead in the eye. “That’s on you. Not me.” I walk out. Hope is screaming in Mrs Lucy's hand. I don’t stop. I don’t look back. *Mrs. Lucy’s POV* After Young Master Jack leaves, the dining room is silent. Mr. Sterling sits back down. Picks up his fork. Like he didn't just tell his son to throw a baby away. Like he didn’t just admit he thinks about it. I set the fresh coffee down. My hands shake. “Mrs. Lucy,” he says without looking at me. “Sir?” “Double the locks on the nursery.” I freeze. “Sir?” “Not to keep her in.” He finally meets my eyes. Cold. Empty. “To keep _him_ out.” I was so scared but what could I do I'm just a maid that survives through them I looked at the baby's face and went to feed her after that I locked her in her room .......
