Chapter 2

Lillian's eyes fluttered open, as she groggily took in the sterile hospital room. A faint beeping noise echoed through the air, and a faint scent of antiseptic hung heavy over her. She scanned through the hospital room and saw a human figure, faintly. Still confused, she winced, bringing the person's attention to her. "Oh! You are awake. Welcome back, miss." a soft voice said to her. Lillian turned her head, wincing at the sharp pain through her temple. A beautiful-looking nurse smiled down at her with a clipboard in her hand. "Wha...what happened? Where am I? Why do I feel pain within me, and weak all of a sudden?" Lillian croaked, her throat dry. "You were in an accident Miss," the nurse replied gently. "And you have been with us for three days now. The doctor will be in to see you shortly." Just then, a tall man walked into the room. His white coat flapped behind him. "Ah, glad to see you are awake," he said, with his firm but kind voice. He approached Lillian and the nurse, "I am Dr. Thompson. And we have been taking care of you since you arrived." Lillian struggled to sit up and rest her back properly, but she felt a sharp pain shoot through her head, making her fall back onto the pillow. "Easy, Miss," Dr. Thompson cautioned. "You have got a nasty concussion, and we need to monitor you closely." The nurse helped Lillian adjust her pillow, and Dr. Thompson began to examine her, asking questions about her memory and vision. During the examination, Lillian's mind struggled to piece together the events that led to the accident. She remembered leaving the aggressive woman's gate, then...nothing. "Doctor?" she called, in a weak tone. "What happened to me? How did I get here?" Dr. Thompson stopped what he was doing, and his expression turned serious. "You were hit by a Jeep, Miss. Luckily for us, we got you here in time." He answered. Instantly, Lillian's eyes widened in horror. "A Jeep car? But...but I don't remember anything." "That is not uncommon with head injuries. We will run some tests, but for now, just focus on getting better, okay?" Dr. Thompson said with a smile. Lillian's mind reeled with questions. Who had hit her? And why? The doctor ordered the nurse to get some drugs for Lillian before he left for another ward. Just as the nurse made to open the door, a man in his mid-sixties walked in on them. The nurse greeted him and went her way. A stretch of disappointment showed on Lillian's face as she expected the person to be her boyfriend. She wished the first person she would open her eyes to see was Thomas. But he won't cease to amaze her. Dr. Thompson slightly bent his head to greet. “Welcome, Sir.” With a simple smile, the man replied. "Good day Doctor, well done so far" The man rushed to where Lillian was seated, excited. “You are awake?" Lillian did not respond. Instead, she became more confused, "Who is this old man?” She questioned herself. With curiosity piqued on his forehead, the old man faced the doctor. “Doctor, I want to know, is she completely fine now?” Dr. Thompson looked at Lillian, then back to the old man. He cleared his throat, “For now, sir, she just needs to use her medications regularly and take enough rest." "That sounds relieving.” The old man sounded happy. Lillian's eyes widened; her worst fear was at play when Dr. Thompson said. “I am afraid she will not be able to work nor undergo any form of stress for a while.” The old man nodded, “I totally understand. Who in his or her right state of mind, would allow someone like her to work." "If you'd excuse me, sir, I have other things to attend to you. A nurse has been assigned to help her with medications.” Dr. Thompson said, and he made to leave. “Alright, thank you, Doctor. You can leave, I shall have my driver sort out the bills." The old man replied. "Thank you, Sir.” Dr. Thompson smirked and went out. Immediately, the Old man took out his phone and made a phone call to someone. After he ended the call, he moved closer to Lillian. “What is your name?" He asked and took his seat closer to her. Lillian managed to reply, taking in the smell of his cologne. “My name is Lillian Marlowe." The old man went blank for a moment, he said. "Have we, by chance, met before?" With her eyebrows raised in frustration, she retorted. “What do you mean? With due respect sir, I don't even know you. I still find it hard to know why the doctor left you with me.” “I guess that came out wrong. My name is Sir Douglas. We had to rush you down here after my driver hit you incautiously.” He continued, worried. "I am sorry you have to go through this unpleasant situation,” he added. Lillian kept mute for some seconds and later burst into tears. Lillian alone understands why she is crying. She thought of how she was going to survive without going out to work till she got better. And her tears began to flow more freely. Sir Douglas felt guilty and sorry. He wished he could share her pain just to make her better. “You need to stop crying, I need you to be back on your feet soon." During the sorrowful moment, a young man entered holding a shopping bag with his left hand. “Oh good you are here. Did you get what I sent you?” "Yes, I did, sir.“ the young man replied immediately. Curiosity piqued on Lillian’s face and she asked, pointing at the man standing. “Who is he?” “This is my driver, and I want you to know that he is very sorry.“ Sir Douglas defended his driver, even though he did not look like it. This made Sir Douglas face him, his voice harsh. “You know I have always warned you to be careful while driving. " With his head facing the floor, the driver remained silent. And Sir Douglas faced Lillian. “I hope you are not feeling pain somewhere else. I could call the doctor to check up on you?" “No sir, I am fine, thank you sir." She replied weakly. “I am also sorry to have caused you any form of stress." Shortly, the driver brought Sir Douglas’s other phone to him as it rang. He collected the phone and placed it on his ear. “What! How do you mean dead…dead?” He asked and ran out of the room hurriedly without a goodbye.
