Chapter 11: Competition Off the Field

1184 Words
NOAHS POV We pull up to the field and I notice a handful of girls huddled together on the bleachers. “Do these girls follow them everywhere?” I ask standing by the jeep. “Pretty much, they’re basically groupies” Brie says hooking her arm in mine before pulling me to the bleachers. Although I’d much rather sit off to the side on my own, Brie hauls me to the group of girls. She jumps right into their conversation. My eyes settle instantly on a very sexy set of abs. The sun makes the sweat on his body glisten. I’m pretty sure my eyes are glazed over with lust at this point. I feel an elbow in my ribs as I’m snapped out my trance. Brie whispers in my ear, “gotta little bit of drool right there, sis” she says touching the corner of my mouth. I smack her hand away, “get outta here!” I laugh. My eyes fall to another guy on the field. I’d never seen him before. He was tall, not as tall as Brent or Hayes but taller than me. He was wearing a tight black under armor tank top that hugged every line on his body. He had wavy blonde hair that hung past his ears and a jawline that could cut someone. He kept looking in my direction but every time he did I’d gaze down at me feet. I couldn’t tell if I enjoyed the attention or hated it. “Who is that?” I asked leaning over to Brie. She glanced up, “that’s Jeff. He’s a junior. I guess he just transferred here this year.” She says looking at him then at me. “Girl, he’s eyeing you like you’re his next meal” I feel my face getting hot. I cross my arms and rake my teeth over my bottom lip. I try to keep my gaze down as much as possible. Once practice is over I look around trying to find Brent in the crowd that’s now on the field but my gaze is blocked by a very sweaty, very attractive body. I glance up and see Jeff smiling at me, a dimple on side of his smile. His dark cocoa eyes are piercing. “Hey, you’re Noah right?” He says, his voice raspy. I cross my arms and smile “yeah, I’m hayes little sister” I say expecting that to be his next question. His eyes widen, “oh really? I had no idea” he says scratching the back of his neck before looking around. I knit my brows together, “wait really?” I ask, the surprise in my voice making him chuckle. “I’m Jeff” he says extending his hand. I place my hand in his. His large hand swallows my smaller one. “You have communications with Hartford at noon right?” He asks and suddenly it makes sense. I slowly nod, “yeah..how did you..” “I’m in there too” he says smiling. I shake my head for a moment trying to remember if I saw him there. “I’m sorry I didn’t..” “don’t be, it’s a huge lecture hall. Lots of people” he says rubbing his hands together. I suddenly remember that I’m supposed to be looking for Brent. I glance past Jeff and see Brent standing by a group of people. Erica’s arm hooked into his. My heart drops into my stomach. His attention is on the conversation he’s having but Erica seems insistent on being glued to him. “Do you want to grab dinner?” I vaguely hear as I’m snapped back to reality. I look up at Jeff. “I’m sorry, what?” I say feeling terrible for having zoned out. Jeff chuckles again, his dimple reappearing. “I asked if you were free. Do you want to grab dinner?” BRENTS POV I felt like a man on top of the world. Not only was Noah in one of my classes but I had successfully convinced her to come to practice and I was going to be able to spend more one on one time with her this evening. I couldn’t help but steal glances at her throughout practice. I’m not gonna lie, I may have even tried to show off a bit for her but noticed her attention was elsewhere. I followed her gaze, and it led me to Jeff Donovan. He seemed pretty fixed on her as well. As if that wasn’t bad enough I saw him approach her after practice. I tried to keep my attention on the conversation happening in front of me but jealousy was rearing it’s ugly head. I wanted nothing more than to pull her away. She was smiling, she was laughing, and I felt worse. Jeff seemed like an okay guy. I didn’t know him too well. He’d just joined the team and seemed to know his stuff. I don’t exactly have an issue with him except he’s moving in on what is mine. Well, she’s not mine but I don’t care. To make matters worse, Erica was glued to my arm again. I don’t know what else I could say to her to get her to move on. All I know is that I couldn’t sit and watch Noah and Jeff hit it off anymore. I slipped out of Ericas grip without a word and jogged my way over to her. As I approached them I heard the tail end of their conversation. “I actually have plans tonight but maybe some other time” Noah said in the sweetest voice. Even when she was turning someone down she was sweet and polite and did this fucker just ask her out? He doesn’t even know her. Does he even know who her brother is? I looked around for Hayes who was making out with some girl named Hailey. Guess it was up to me to end this. “Jeff, good practice man” I say sticking my fist out. He returned the fist bump, “thanks bro” he said. I have to keep myself from chuckling. I’m not your bro I thought to myself. I turned to Noah. “Ready to go?” I say trying to get us out of here as quickly as possible. She smiles and nods before grabbing her backpack. Jeff lingers and it starts to piss me off. What is he waiting for? “I’ll carry your backpack” I say taking her bag from her. I slip the straps onto my shoulders. “Hey, before you go..” Jeff starts and I’m clenching my teeth. He takes his phone and hands it to Noah. “Why don’t you put your number in so it’s easier to get together in the future” I glance between the two of them. I cringe as she puts her number into his phone. I’m about to lose my s**t. I’ve never been so jealous before. This feeling is completely new and I don’t like it.
