Shift

Aster and I spend the rest of the day in my room talking through everything. it's just what I needed to get through the day.

"the sun is setting soon. just a few more hours till it's time." Aster says while gazing out the bay window. "how are you feeling?"

I shrug "honestly it doesn't feel real. everything seems like a crazy dream- or maybe nightmare." I grimace "I just want to wake up and get ready for the peaceful ceremony and start this week over." I give a small chuckle.

"Aster gives me a sympathetic glance "I understand. this week has been hell on wheels for you."

knock knock knock

I groan "come on in mom."

my mom steps through the door with a huge grin on her face "it's time to start getting ready honey!" she comes over and pulls me off the bed "up up up get your butt in the shower!"

I roll my eyes "I'm going I'm going."

Aster laughs with my mom as I close the door to the bathroom.

after a quick shower and shave, I chuckle to myself as I shave knowing in a few short hours I'll be covered head to toe in thick most likely brown fur like the rest of the pack.

I quickly dry my hair as I shut the blow dryer off my mother comes barging in with her best friend Theresa. "make up time!"

I glance past her looking for my buffer.

my mom notices and giggles "Don't worry Aster will be right back, she ran out front to grab her stuff from Parker so she can get ready with you."

I sigh and plop down in the chair. "please nothing to crazy ladies you know I like to keep my natural look."

my mom grabs my face and pinches my cheeks like she did when I was a young pup. "I wouldn't dream of covering up your natural beauty my sweet girl." she kisses my cheek and I see her quickly wipe away a small tear off her cheek.

"oh mama." I pull her into a hug and she starts sniffling which makes me sniffle with her.

"don't 'mama' me Rainbow. my little girl is growing up. I just can't believe it." she hugs me tighter and we both sob for a few moments before Theresa pulls us apart.

"okay no more tears you two let's get this girl ready to meet her wolf!" she quickly gets to work and the two talk non stop about what they think my wolf will look like.

I hear the old grandfather clock chime and look at my mom "it's eleven now. not much time left."

she quickly stands "oh my okay we got this." she hands me my white robe. "You get changed we will meet you down stairs we've gotta go change as well!" she grabs Theresa and they rush out the door.

Aster pops her head in just as I'm tying my robe. it's tradition for the newly shifting wolf to wear a white silk robe for their first shift. the rest of the pack wears black.

"oh my goddess Rainey you look beautiful!" she runs over and pulls me into a big hug.

"thanks girl!" I smile "you ready?"

she nods excitedly "yes! let's go do this thing!"

we meet our parents downstairs and make our way to the bonfire. the party is in full swing. everyone comes up to wish me luck and give me hugs.

the nerves are really setting in now.

I head over to the drink table and get myself some punch to hopefully calm my racing heart. as soon as I take a sip and turn around I come face to face with Ryker.

"you look absolutely stunning Bow." his eyes rake over my body and I see his hand reaching for the tie on my robe.

I quickly step back so my butt hits the table "get away from me Ryker. unless of course you want a repeat of last night." I smirk at him and see rage burn in his eyes.

he takes another step towards me and before I can react none other than Blue latches onto him like the leach she is. I've never been so happy to see her.

"Rykey where have you been silly I've been looking all over for you!" she pulls him back giving me a chance yo make my exit.

I hear him growl as I step away and dart towards the gathering crowd.

my dad gets on the stage and clears his throat. guess it's time. I slowly make my way to the stage as he addresses the crowd. "namaste fellow pack mates."

everyone bows and in unison says "namaste Guru Sage."

"thank you all so much for gathering here tonight to witness my daughter, your future Guru, in her transition." he waves his hand towards me "Rainbow please come here."

I walk the couple steps up the stage and take my father's hand. he pulls me into a hug and whispers "it's not to late to accept Ryker baby girl."

I quickly pull back and try to hide the look of disgust of my face "I'd rather take my chances father."

he sighs and turns back to the crowd. 'we have one minute till midnight, Rainbow please step behind the curtain once you've shifted you will step out for the pack to see you. then all able shall shift and join in you a midnight run which you will lead."

I nod and step behind the curtain. my mother comes back to help me through the shift. I feel myself shaking with anticipation.

"you got this baby, just remember to breathe through the pain. it only hurts for a moment then your world will change forever." she kisses my head as I sit on the floor.

"how do I do it?" I ask realizing now I have no clue how to shift.

"just breathe. close your eyes and call to your wolf. she will find you. then once you see her and feel her, give her the reigns. she will do the rest." she takes a step back giving me space.

I close my eyes and take a few deep breathes then suddenly I hear the most angelic voice I've ever heard "it's time Rainbow."

I gasp and feel my body getting warm. I hear a loud gasp come from my mother but I keep my eyes closed waiting for the pain.

after a few moments I feel like I'm floating. I can't help but open my eyes and what I see before me completely shocks me.

I'm nearly three feet of the ground my body is glowing a bright purple aura. I glance at my mother who is standing back with wide eyes and a hand over her mouth.

I try to speak to her but nothing comes out. I feel myself begin to change. my hands turn into paws, I feel my face growing and stretching into a snout. I feel what I'm assuming is my tail growing out behind me.

I close my eyes again waiting for the pain.

but I feel nothing.

"what's happening?" I question my wolf.

"Patience Rainbow. we are special you will see."

I feel my paws touch the ground and open my eyes. everything is so crisp and clear. I can see for miles in the dark night. I hear the words being spoken so clearly on the other side of the curtain.

I look down at my paws to see what color they are and freeze when I see pure snow white.

I quickly glance at my mother who has now pulled my father back. both of whom are gaping at me.

"White wolf." is all my father says before running back to the podium.

my mother quickly pulls the curtain down for everyone to see. they all stare wide eyed and open mouthed at me.

I take a step forward and suddenly it felt like a brick wall hit me. I could hear the thought of every single person around.

"white wolf!" most are chanting over and over

"oh my goddess I new my best friend was special!" I can feel Asters love

"of course she would be a white wolf." Blue is clearly jealous of anything I do.

"she will be mine." the eerie thought of Ryker seep into my head.

I lower my head as the pain from everyone becomes worse "block them Rainbow. it won't go away unless you block the thoughts."

I quickly imagine a wall surrounding me preventing the thought of the pack invading my head. slowly they start to dissappear till I'm left alone with my own.
