CLOVIS LOOKED AT EMMA and she nodded. Staying clear of the open doorway, she peered around the frame as Clovis went in low. A weak ribbon of yellow light from the rusted sconce above the door painted a path on the worn carpet to the first bed. The quick slap of weighted leather against flesh was followed by a grunting noise. Emma slipped around the doorframe as Clovis moved silently around the end of the bed, heading toward the second double bed. A light flared and Emma blinked. Clovis dove between the beds as the fat thug fired a shot in his direction. Emma fired back, hitting the wall beside frog face and diving beneath the small, round table under the window.
