The Echoes of Aetheria 1

Chapter 1: The Shifting SkyThe city of Aetheria hung suspended between two worlds—one of earth and stone, the other of stars and dreams. Cassia Veyla had never feared the city's precarious existence on the edge of a precipice that overlooked the endless void below. But now, standing on the familiar balcony of her small apartment, something felt wrong. The winds had changed. The shift in the air was subtle, but it unsettled her. Aetheria was governed by the stars and the celestial winds that carried its floating islands across the sky. For the first time in her life, she felt the fragile balance that held her world together start to fray. She wasn’t alone on that balcony."Something's wrong, isn't it?" a deep voice asked behind her.Cassia turned to find Dorian standing in the doorway. His dark hair was tousled from sleep, and he wore the loose tunic he’d thrown on hastily when she slipped out of bed to check the sky. His eyes, always watchful, narrowed as he looked past her to the horizon.Dorian had been her closest companion for years, their friendship evolving into something deeper that neither of them had expected nor entirely knew how to define. They had always been partners—in life, in the work of the Skyward—but lately, Cassia had found herself seeing him differently. She felt his presence in a way that was new and exhilarating, though she had yet to fully embrace the change."It’s the winds," she said softly, her gaze turning back to the swirling sky. "They’ve shifted. That’s never happened before."Dorian stepped closer, his hand brushing hers as he leaned on the balcony rail. The warmth of his touch sent a shiver through her, but she kept her focus on the unsettling sky."Then we should talk to the others," he said, his voice low but steady. "If the winds are changing, the stars may be, too."Cassia nodded. "I think the city is in danger.""We’ll figure it out," Dorian said, his hand finally settling over hers. His touch was grounding, and though Cassia tried to ignore it, her heart quickened."You always say that," she teased, her lips curving into a small smile despite the anxiety gnawing at her."Because I believe it," he replied, his voice warm. "We’ve faced worse things than changing winds."She turned to look at him then, really look at him, and saw the concern etched on his features. His brow was furrowed, his blue eyes flicking back and forth across the horizon as though searching for an answer in the sky. For all the calm he projected, she knew Dorian well enough to see his own fears reflected in the lines of his face. But it was his steadiness that always reassured her, his ability to make her feel like no matter what storm was coming, they would weather it together.Without thinking, she reached up and touched his cheek, the gesture more intimate than she'd intended. His breath hitched slightly, and for a moment, time seemed to stand still between them."Dorian..." she began, but before she could finish, a loud rumble split the air, shaking the ground beneath them. They both looked up at the sky, and Cassia's heart sank. The Celestial Belt—the swirling river of stars that governed their world—had shifted, its constellations no longer in their proper places. The stars were moving."We need to go," Dorian said urgently, his hand now gripping hers tightly. "The Tower."Cassia nodded, pulling herself together. The time for hesitation was over. They had a city to save.
