CHAPTER 4 | THE MESSAGE

568 Words
Rainpaw stretched, leaning forward, her claws raking the hay underneath her. She felt for the soft fur of Whitepaw but there was nothing but hay and air. She sat up, looking around, sleepily. Where was he? “Good morning.” The hay shuffled around at the bottom and Rainpaw spotted the white tom climbing up the tower of hay, toward her with two fat, juicy mice in his jaws, dangling buy their tails. “I was up before dawn so I caught a mouse each for us and climbed a tree to see where we should start travelling,” meowed Whitepaw around the tails. “Thank you,” replied Rainpaw as Whitepaw dropped one of the mice between her paws. They both swallowed the last of their mice and headed out of the abandoned twoleg nest. Whitepaw led them across the stretch of open grass until they got to another hedge that skirted the outside of a village. As they walked Rainpaw couldn’t help but feel guilty that she was leaving her clan in a time of need. They had two hostile clans on either side of their borders and now she had left them to defend themselves on their own, plus it was winter so prey would be scarce. Not looking where she was going Rainpaw tripped over a root of a tree and fell straight into a part of the hedge. The two were careful not to go into the village but Rainpaw hadn’t been watching where she was putting their paws. She tugged to pull herself free of the bush but she didn’t move. “Whitepaw!” she groaned as he looked back at her. All that was sticking out of the hedge was Rainpaw’s hindquarters and her stamping paws. Whitepaw let out meow of laughter as she lashed her tail angrily. Struggling like this, Rainpaw was reminded of her dream and how she was caught in the bramble thicket. She closed her eyes and saw Bluestar. “ThunderClan needs you!” shouted Bluestar her eyes glowing. The relaxing feeling that flowed off the former ThunderClan leader didn’t betray the desperation in her voice. Rainpaw was shaken back to the real world by a huge tug on the scruff. Whitepaw had pulled her free. “What would you have done without me?” he laughed. Rainpaw was shaken by her vision. She licked her fur, trying to make it lie flat again but she still felt frightened. The fear on her face must have told Whitepaw that something was wrong because he asked her, “what’s wrong?” “We have to go back!” Rainpaw was needing the ground with her claws. “What?” There was desperation in Rainpaw’s voice when she yowled, “StarClan spoke to me! We must leave!” “StarClan spoke to you? I thought you didn’t believe in StarClan.” “Bluestar was there. She told me that ThunderClan was in trouble. They need me! They need us!” She started bounding back the way they came. To her relief Whitepaw didn’t ask any more questions. They headed back home. What could ThunderClan need her for? What if she got there and nothing had happened? Maybe her mind just made it up about StarClan and Bluestar. She couldn’t doubt it. If her clan needed her she wouldn’t be able to forgive herself if anything happened to her clanmates.
