Whitepaw’s POV
Whitepaw raced after Rainpaw. She had told him that Bluestar spoke to her. The day before his friend told him that she didn’t believe in StarClan but now she claimed that an ancestor spoke to her. He believed her so he didn’t protest when she decided to turn back.
The two of them came to the edge of clan territory, their sides heaving. They stopped at the top, looking toward ThunderClan territory. Whitepaw saw a flash of fear in Rainpaw’s eyes, anxiety flowing steadily off both their pelts. Rainpaw took the first step back over the border but she didn’t seem happy. Whitepaw guessed she was worried that the clan wouldn’t take them back. After all they had been exiled, which meant they weren’t welcome to come back. What would happen if Firestar refused their return? They could only find out by going back.
The earth was covered in frost in the early morning air. The two apprentices padded along the stream that ran between the WindClan and ThunderClan border so they would be more unlikely to be spotted by a ThunderClan patrol. WindClan scent was strong as they stepped into ThunderClan territory and by the smell of it they had trespassed. The air cracked with tension. Were they being watched?
They headed further away from the border as the got closer to the lake and deeper into ThunderClan. There was still fresh WindClan scent and the sound of fighting cats suddenly filled Whitepaw’s ears. Rainpaw braced herself against the ground and Whitepaw but quickly stood back up when she realised the fighting cats weren’t after them but in their camp.
Whitepaw and Rainpaw both sprang up at the same time and raced faster than the wind toward their camp. Once they got to the bramble entrance the stench of blood had filled the air. Whitepaw caterwauled a battle cry, Rainpaw at his side and headed toward the first cat they saw. It was a light brown tabby tom who Whitepaw recognised as Owlwhisker. Whitepaw leaped on top of Owlwhisker, startling him, nocking him off his paws. Rainpaw went to take a bite on the brown tabby’s front leg but before she could she was slammed into by a cat from her side.
Whitepaw scrambled off his enemy to help his friend but Owlwhisker was too fast for him, springing onto Whitepaw and bowling him over. Whitepaw couldn’t see Rainpaw anywhere in the thickness of battle. Whitepaw felt Owlwhisker being dragged off him and turned to see Cinderheart helping him, but when she saw him anger and fear flashed in her eyes. Whitepaw didn’t have the time to worry about what his clanmates thought of him so he turned around and plunged into the depths of battle, raking his claws across a grey pelt that was fighting another Thunderclan cat. The grey warrior turned around and to Whitepaw’s dismay it was Ashfoot, WindClan’s deputy. How ever would an apprentice like him win against a deputy?
Whitepaw was exhausted, his paws aching but he kept on fighting. Ashfoot jumped onto Whitepaw’s back, landing hard, nocking the wind out of him. Whitepaw could feel Ashfoot’s strong muscles tense and could feel her claws pressing into his shoulders. He could feel her jaws by his neck and just before she sank her teeth in he remembered one of his battle moves he had learned from his mentor. He ducked and used all his strength to spring up and send the Windclan deputy flying. Ashfoot was laying on her side. The hard thud told Whitepaw the wind was nocked out of her and gave him the chance to sprint over and push his front claws into her exposed stomach. He stood there gazing into her eyes. For a moment he looked up and had a view of his clan fighting. ThunderClan was loosing the fight! They were totally outnumbered and the ThunderClan cats looked exhausted and tired. There were a few of his clanmates that Whitepaw saw laying motionless on the ground. Fear stabbed him in the stomach.
There was no preparation for what happened next. A spotted grey tabby she-cat slammed into Whitepaw, followed by a brown tom with one black ear that raked his nose. Whitepaw fell on his side and his vision went blurry. Was this the end? Was ThunderClan coming to an end?
