Chapter 14

Benson's POV It was a great Storm, and every storm, every great storm had a momment of peace. The calm part, the eye of the storm. We were in it. The back side of this storm was going to be bad. It hadn't snowed all night or day, but it would again soon. A long drawn out howl sounded a mile away I picked up there herbs I'd savaged under frost and tucked them into the house. The pack trotted towards Alex who stood in the clearing. Wike snorted, "Yes it has, rabbits and measily little squirells don't last long" he complained. No one could disagree with that. "It's been too long since a propper hunt" Alex said. "Time for an elk hunt!" Wike howled. We howled along with him before dashing in a single file line. First Mark, Luke, Wike, and Alex. I stayed behind though. I had to watch over the territory, our herbs, and the pups. They disappeared into the distance while I headed to pup's room. The pups should have opened their eyes, so no doubt they were probably running around. My feet hit the snowy and icy ground with soft, dull thuds. I was panting hard, sniffing the air for wonderfull scents of elk. The scent hit my nose, and my stomach growled. I was hungry, near starving for something to eat. The elk herd lifted their heads high. 'To late for ambush, they've seen us' I thought. I barked loudly and swept my tail across the snow. Luke snarled viciously and dashed ahead with lots of snow kicked up behind him. The rest of the pack spread out and we followed Luke a distance away. Luke chased the elk, testing each one for a weakness. 'Leaf-bare is old, the elk are old, there has to be a weak one' I thought praying to the Ice Lunars to listen. The moon shone brightly ahead. Luke was chasing an elk down below when he suddenly changed directions and went for a large elk. Usualy the larger elk were stronger, not the ones we wanted to hunt. 'Luke knows best, but…' I wondered whether to go in or not. He lunged for the Elks neck, and then I saw it. A cut, a bloody wound in the elks neck. Apparently some other wolf or predator had failed hunting it, and it had made it away with a major wound. My nose twitched. I couldn't smell blood though, just the icy air that stung my nose. I was about to give the signal to go in and help when something else happened. The elk fell forward tumbling to the ground onto Luke! "Lukee!" Charissa called to him, he dashed forward. My mind went blank for a momment before I came to my sense. I ran down to Luke who lay squirming beneath elk. Charissa was pushing against the elk with all her strength. The rest of us pushed and finaly it moved over. "Th-thanks" luke whimpered, his teeth chattering. Snow and blood was caked into his fur. Thank goodness the blood wasn't his own. Luke lifted himself up, but the momment his back legs moved he fell to the ground whimpering. "Luke" Charissa murmmered and brushed her fur against him. His tense body relaxed a bit, but he was still in great pain. "We'll need to move you somehow" I said, "Louisa will need to look at your legs" I nodded to the rest of the pack that they could eat while I called to Louisa for help. I ripped a chunk of meat off for myself and Luke who was immobile and couldn't reach the carcass. "Poor Luke" Charissa murmmered. "I've never seen my sister this docile, this affectionate" Wike whispered to me. I nodded my head in agreement. I chewed on the sweet, tangy meat happily. I was so hungry, so very greatfull to be full by the time I finished eating. I heard panting and a sweet and distinctive scent hit my nose. It wasn't like blueberries, which Louisa smelled like. Before I could say anything she spoke, "We need to support his back legs" she told me, "If we put a stick under his lower body and have two wolves on either side life it, it'll keep his back legs up" she added. I nodded understandingly. I padded over to the carcass and put my jaws around one of the thickest, largest curved ribs of the elk. I twisted and it broke off. "Louisa is watching the pups" Lucy told me. She stretched and wripped a chunk of meat to eat, and looked over at Luke with great concern. "Alex, I can hold the other side" Charissa told him. Alex looked at her with understanding eyes. It was no secret that Luke and Charissa were meant for each other, they were true mates. Charissa and I supported a side of the bone. We lifted it up, and Luke's back legs were off the ground. We walked home carrying his back legs, while Luke walked with his front legs. Meanwhile Wike howled to Louisa to come eat. Once at the medicine center Luke was set down gently. He was breathing hard, as we left. He'd be okay, I was sure of it. Not to mention he had Charissa watching over him until Louisa came back. I trotted to the house with Lucy. Inside the pups were sprawled out asleep. I had to admit they were very cute. They're the park's pups, alive and healthy. I lay inside with Lucy until she too, fell asleep. I raced back to the medicine center. Louisa stood there looking at Luke's leg, gently nudging them with her nose. "Is he okay?" Charissa whimpered, her eyes were glossy and wet with tears. "Yes Luke will be fine, but he's pulled a few muscles in his back legs. Any strain on them will make it worse" Louisa told her. "Oh thank goodness!" Charissa exclaimed as she pressed her nose to Luke lovingly. Louisa trotted backwards toward me. "Isn't he a lucky wolf" Louisa joked. "Oh yes. He'll be mad about being cooped up in here, but I'm sure he won't mind the attention from Charissa" I whispered back. I looked at Luke with a goofy, suggested, wolf grin. His eyes widened and flickered from me to Charissa before he returned the grin. I left them, so Louisa could find the right herbs to give to Luke. Luke would be fine, just fine. We had plenty of herbs to go around to the pack and more. Charissa would help out for Luke's sake, and for sure she'd keep him in high spirits. I looked up at the cloudy sky. It was going to snow tonight for sure. The clouds were dark, and dense. Not a simple snow, but an icy blizzard. I trotted down to the river and starred at the ice. I rose up on my hind legs and hit the ice with my front paws. The force I exerted broke the ice and I bit out the ice inbetween my paws before lapping up some of the cold icy water. I trotted to Lucy's room . It was going to be cold, and I wanted to make sure the pups stayed warm. Despite the tension between the rogue's I wanted all the pups to survive the odds. I sat in the midst of the camp on top of a rock beside Lucy. Since becoming alpha and luna of this pack together things had changed. I watched rogue wolves walk around the camp. They were either tearing apart the carcass of a deer, or were challenging each other for dominence, cit has been a pot for me and I think about Maria less now. All I went is to protect my park, Lucy and the pups we have in the park. It was amusing to watch a couple of wolves or maybe four wolves at once take each other on. I lept down from my throne and sniffed the air. It smelled of blood, and I sensed a warm draft coming in. Some how or some way we couldn't travel across the ice, but as soon as it melts we'll be there. "And I'll be the one to tear apart Lucy's, limb from limb" I growled furiously. "Now, now don't become so worked up" Alex told me. He jumped down from the high stone he sat on and brushed his fur against mine. A couple wolves dashed by, the wolf in front was bleeding. My eyes widened and my fur stood on end. Within seconds other wolves around the camp were on thier paws chasing after the injured bleeding wolf. The scent of its blood was like a call and we responded like sharks to an injured seal. I was first to lunge, my teeth snipped its back leg. It howled and cried out in pain, but continued running. My back straightend out and I forced myself to run faster. My heart was pounding, I was panting, and I lunged. This time my teeth tore into its neck. We were on the wolf in seconds, lapping up blood and reknewing our strength. I and Alex sat on thrones, we feasted on blood even if it meant killing our own pack members. This is what we had become After a nights rest I went with Wike and Mark to the main camp. "When they attack I don't want the nursing mothers so close to battle" I told him. There was a small hill, not large, but it was steep and dipped into the land perfectly. The rocks aroudn it would break the wind well, too, and it would be near impossible for a fox or a bear to break in. As we dug I could feel my nails start to wear down, so we took breaks periodically. We dug straight into the earth before moving out wards so it the inside was shapped like an oval. 'I wonder how big this pack could become. Wike and Alex obviously love each other, same as Charissa and Luke, and then there's the wolves from the park who will start mating and our park will be bigger by every passing day' I thought. I smiled and felt more confident about my packs survival. We ran over to the nursery to give the mother wolves the news about the pack. "Why's that?" Alex asked. "I want to build another nursery up here, away from the river" I told him. "I suppose you right, but we need to move you and the pups away from the river. It can't be long till we engage in battle, I don't want you in danger" Jason one of the wovles told his mate. Benita sniffed her pups; their backs were covered with a short patchy coat. "It's awefully cold" Benita added. They did have a point, but so did we. "Should we be moving out pups though?" Lucy asked. "I suppose your right, but lets do this quickly and orderly" Lucy suggested Mark, Alex, Jason, and I began racing back and forth with pups. Alxe stayed in the new den with Lucy to keep the pups warm while we ran back to bring more. Benita's three pups, Jason's mate one, and two of other pups were brought over. All together we brought the pups over. The pups shivered in the unfamiliar nursery and they whinned to express their displeasure. "I suppose your right, but lets do this quickly and orderly" Benita said "The nursery should be sealed up as beast as it can, bring some moss" I ordered. Alex nodded his head and rushed to Louisa's room to look for moss that had been stored in her storage. He returned quickly with bundles of moss. Cracks between rocks were sealed off. After ensuring that the new den would be warm and safe I decided to return to the medicine den. My paws began to sting from running on the ice and snow, but I ignored the bitter pain. I dashed around a few trees that stood through the cold snow and slowed down when I reached Louisa's den. "She's awake, shall probably be back on her feet soon" Louisa said, she trotted out of the storage in the back of her den. Her fur smelled of fresh herbs ranging from a semi-sweet to a bitter smell. I watched her spread an ointment made from the herbs onto Lucy's side which was healing quicker than I expected. I leaned down and pressed my nose to Lucy. "Mari?" I murmmered. Lucy's eyes fluttered open, a dull and sleepy expression hung over her. "Lucy?" she murmmered trying to bring my senses back. "I'm here, I'm here with you" I replied softly. I felt her lick my muzzle lovingly. I lifted my head up to speak. "We moved the nursery to a safer location" I told both Louisa and Lucy. My mate weakly nodded her head, "I like that idea" she whispered. "Just where did you move the nursery?" Louisa asked, her eyes narrowed. "Due west from here, just a little distance from her and the center of the camp. I wanted to move the mothers and pups away from the river" I said, leaving out the other reason concerning the rogues. "Good, I don't want the them near the battle field" Lucy said, "When the rogue's attack" Lucy told me. "I'm not worried, but it's not like I don't know they are a threat. I know they're going to attack eventually. I'm glad the mothers and pups have been moved to a safer place" Lucy said. She began to move, and stood up. "I don't want you worrying about that" I said quickly. I frowned, and brought my eyes level to Lucy. A small smile spread on her face, "Benita, I don't think you should be up so soon" Louisa said, her voice holding a thin line of authority. "But I do, and I want to see my pups" Benita said as she stretched. I noticed she winced in pain for a momment, but quickly recomposed herself. "Thank you so much Louisa. Your a great medicine wolf, and Alpha Benson" she began. Benita bowed her head, "Thanks for being a great protector to the pups" she added before leaving the medicine nursery. I watched her trott away before begining to run to the new room, following her pups scent. "She's something else" Louisa chuckled. I laughed as well, "Well I'm going to go take a look at the pups" Louisa informed me, "I want to make sure they're allright" she added. Louisa grabbed a bundle of herbs and left the nursery as well. I left the nursery as well and trotted back to mine. I scratched the ground and lay down finaly. I felt relaxed, knowing surely what I done was a good idea to move the pups. Hey.. loveeeesss Benson is slowly falling in love with Lucy even though he has little time to spend with her because of his pack's matters.
