I could only sense Frizz, his familiar presence like a shadowy cocoon surrounding me. The sound of approaching footsteps had my heart shaking with fear, and without thinking, I moved back, aware there was a hole the size of Idaho somewhere behind me. “Frizz,” I whispered. He pressed against my leg, tried to reassure. “Lights. I need to see.” My eyes scanned the darkness left and right. Bit by bit, I made out silhouettes, dim shadows that turned to figures as the light brightened. The moment I was able to see what approached, I almost went down to my knees and begged.
