THE EMPEROR'S DECREE

760 Words
The sun was setting over the imperial palace, casting a golden glow over the crowded court. Empress Wu sat on her throne, her eyes scanning the room with a keen gaze. She was a woman of great power and intelligence, and she would not be swayed by empty flattery or petty squabbles. "Lord Zhang, you have served the empire well," she said, her voice clear and commanding. "Your loyalty and dedication will not go unrewarded. I hereby decree that you shall be granted the title of Duke, and shall be given a grand estate in the countryside." Lord Zhang bowed low, his face beaming with pride. "Thank you, Your Majesty. I am but a humble servant of the empire." Empress Wu nodded, her eyes glancing around the room. "And now, let us discuss the matter of the imperial exams. I have heard that the candidates are well-prepared, and I expect great things from them." Xiao Yao, who was standing at the back of the room, felt a surge of excitement. He had spent years studying for this moment, and he was determined to make a good impression. As the empress spoke, Xiao Yao's mind began to wander. He thought about Wei Ling, and the time they had spent together. He knew that he was taking a risk by pursuing her, but he couldn't help himself. She was like a flame, burning bright and beautiful, and he was a moth drawn to her light. Just as the empress finished speaking, a eunuch approached Lord Zhang and whispered something in his ear. Lord Zhang's face darkened, and he bowed low. "Your Majesty, I beg to be excused. There is a matter of great importance that requires my attention." Empress Wu nodded, her eyes narrowing. "What is it, Lord Zhang?" Lord Zhang hesitated, then spoke in a low voice. "It is a matter of treason, Your Majesty. One of the candidates for the imperial exams has been accused of cheating." The room fell silent, and Xiao Yao felt a surge of fear. He knew that if he was accused of cheating, his reputation would be ruined, and he would be lucky to escape with his life. Empress Wu's eyes flashed with anger. "Bring the accused before me," she commanded. As the accused was brought before her, Xiao Yao's heart sank. It was Li Wei, his best friend and fellow scholar. Li Wei was pale and trembling, but he stood tall as he faced the empress. "I swear, Your Majesty, I did not cheat. I studied hard and earned my place." Empress Wu's gaze was piercing. "I will investigate this matter, and if I find that you are guilty, you will pay the price." Xiao Yao knew that he had to act fast. He stepped forward, bowing low. "Your Majesty, I vouch for Li Wei. He is a man of honor and integrity, and I am willing to stake my own reputation on his innocence." The room fell silent, and Empress Wu's eyes narrowed. "You are willing to stake your reputation on his innocence, Xiao Yao?" Xiao Yao nodded, his heart pounding. "Yes, Your Majesty. I am." Empress Wu nodded, a small smile playing on her lips. "Very well. I will take your words into consideration. But if Li Wei is found guilty, you will both pay the price." As the court adjourned, Xiao Yao felt a sense of trepidation. He knew that he had just taken a great risk, and he was not sure if he would be able to pay the price. As he left the palace, Xiao Yao saw Wei Ling waiting for him. Her eyes were shining with tears, and she looked more beautiful than ever. "Xiao Yao, I heard what happened," she said, her voice trembling. "You took a great risk for Li Wei. Why did you do it?" Xiao Yao smiled, taking her hand. "Because he's my friend, Wei Ling. And because I know that he would do the same for me." Wei Ling's eyes searched his face, and then she smiled. "I think I understand, Xiao Yao. You're a true friend, and a true scholar." As they walked through the streets of Chang'an, Xiao Yao knew that he had made the right decision. He had taken a risk, but it was worth it. For the first time in his life, he felt truly alive. But as they walked, Xiao Yao couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched. He glanced around, but saw nothing. Still, the feeling persisted, and he knew that they were in danger.
